Live Review: Sepultura,  HATE, Neuraxis, Keep of Kalesin
Tuesday, May 31th, 2011
The Vogue Theater, Vancouver, B.C.

This has indeed proven to be the tour of 1000 corpses. First Nevermore runs into irreconcilable differences and calls it quits, forced to drop off the bill. Then Bonded by Blood mysteriously fails to appear; leaving Vancouver fans with a 4 band bill instead of 6. Luckily the remaining 4 were strong enough to carry the tour and Vancouver received one hell of a show.

First up, Neuraxis brought some technical death metal to lively up the crowd. It didn’t take much warming up to get the pit going considering it’s been 2 years since the Montreal-based band has toured through. They made a huge impression as one of the heaviest and most technical bands on the bill. Vocalist Alex Leblanc, with a stage presence somewhere between the likes of Corpsegrinder (Cannibal Corpse) and Frank Mullen (Suffocation), kept the crowd transfixed with neck-wrenching head spins and brutal, guttural growls.

Next up, melodic death metal band Keep of Kalessin. Coming all the way from Norway, these guys played tracks from their latest album Reptilian and the previous Kolossus. Though having to endure a much too short set for their caliber, Keep of Kalessin made the most out of the situation and kept the energy high throughout. By this point, the Vogue Theatre was being retrofitted as a true, underground metal venue; the only aspects out of sink –an intuitive lighting technician and the kind of amazing acoustics only found in an old school theatre.

Main support Hate stormed the stage next. Though masters at what they do, their performance evokes one of the greatest ironies in music: non-stop intensity does not necessarily equate an energetic or interesting performance. Somehow the faster-then-hell double kicks and repetitive guitar riffs became hypnotizing and dare I say it, calming. While this didn’t seem to be the general consensus, judging by the wild crowd who eventually ripped a seat out of the floor, their non-existent stage show and lack of dynamics made them the least entertaining act of the night.

While there’s been much controversy surrounding Sepultura since the departure of Max Cavalera, this seemed to be no issue for the rowdy Vogue audience. Let’s face it, there’s no replacing Cavalera, but vocalist Derrick Green has been fronting the band since 1997 and he’s doing a damn good job of it. Longtime members Paulo Jr. (bass) and Andreas Kisser (guitar) also had a strong presence not to mention newcomer (relatively speaking) Jean Dolabella on drums, who nearly stole the show with his tireless, mind-bending beats.

While they played show stopping tracks from albums such as Arise, Chaos A.D and Roots, the highlight of the evening was the drum jam, when drummers from the previous bands joined Sepultura onstage. Being the last date on the tour, the bands seemed laid back, making the most of this final show. Even with the loss of one of the co-headliners, this was definitely made it a night to remember for everyone present.
