BBC Four’s “Heavy Metal Britannia” Documentary – Watch it Here!

March 20th, 2010 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

(BBC) – Nigel Planer narrates a documentary which traces the origins and development of British heavy metal from its humble beginnings in the industrialized Midlands to its proud international triumph.

In the late 60s a number of British bands were forging a new kind of sound. Known as hard rock, it was loud, tough, energetic and sometimes dark in outlook. They didn’t know it, but Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and, most significantly, Black Sabbath were defining what first became heavy rock and then eventually heavy metal.

Inspired by blues rock, progressive rock, classical music and high energy American rock, they synthesized the sound that would inspire bands like Judas Priest to take metal even further during the 70s.

By the 80s its originators had fallen foul of punk rock, creative stasis or drug and alcohol abuse. But a new wave of British heavy metal was ready to take up the crusade. With the success of bands like Iron Maiden, it went global.

Contributors include Lemmy, Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, Ian Gillan from Deep Purple, Judas Priest singer Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden and Saxon’s Biff Byford.

Globally celebrated, critically revered, hard rock masterminds, MASTODON, continue to command media attention finishing out 2009 even stronger that it started with their album, Crack The Skye, placing on numerous “Year End / Best of 2009″ critics lists and readers polls including an impressive #8 entry on the prestigious Village Voice Annual Pazz & Jop Critics Poll’s “Top 25 Albums of 2009″ list. For the past eleven months MASTODON have toured the world on their own as well as a co-headline tour with Dethklok and dates overseas supporting Metallica which continues to expand their notoriety as a peerless live force of nature. Now on the Volcom Tour this spring will bring the band to the fans in American cities that have yet to experience the “Crack The Skye” live event.
Celebrated progressive rock / cutting-edge metal band BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME (BTBAM) merges unparalleled musical bravery, prodigious musicianship, flawless execution and an angular landscape of forward thinking ideas to reinvent the rock ‘n roll idiom while pleasing their harshest critics: themselves. Joining metal’s dexterity and progressive rock’s forward-looking action, BTBAM create spine-tingling sound that contains visceral power, labyrinthine arrangement, mind-boggling melody and majestic beauty. Since its inception, the band has proven itself as a progressive rock pacesetter whose modernist clang pegs it as a paradigm to be followed and a yardstick by which other bands are measured. The band’s critically acclaimed new album “The Great Misdirect” is in stores now.
BARONESS are touring in support of their stunning sophomore album, Blue Record. Blue Record is an instantly-classic album that has landed the band on numerous year- and decade- best of lists. Deep and dark; Blue Record overflows with gossamer melodies and striking, earnest riffs that have become the band’s signature. BARONESS has already headlined through the US and Europe on Blue Record, and will be traveling to Australia and Japan for the first time as a band this spring before they hit the road on the Volcom Tour. The band has also been invited to play at both the Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals this year.
Continuing their single-minded mission to spread their message of peace with a catalyst of hard & fast Rock n’ Roll, the mighty band from the planet Venus, VALIENT THORR, are currently writing and recording their 5th full-length album, taking some time off from their staggeringly productive tour schedule that finds them averaging close to 250 dates a year. Look for a brand new Valient Thorr song to be released to coincide with the start of the 2010 Volcom Tour.

F.U.T.P.T – Priest charged with selling cocaine from rectory

February 13th, 2009 Filed under: Filling Up The Pisstank™, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

(AP) — A Catholic priest who worked on the University of Illinois campus has been sentenced to four years probation after being convicted of selling cocaine from his church office and rectory.

The Rev. Christopher Layden, who was most recently assigned to the Newman Center at the university, pleaded guilty to the Class 1 felony charge.

In addition to probation, Layden also was fined $2,500 and ordered to complete 150 hours of community service and recommended drug treatment. Defense attorney Mark Lipton said the priest has completed inpatient drug treatment and is following treatment plans.

In a statement released Thursday, Catholic Diocese of Peoria Bishop Daniel Jenky said he continues to be saddened by Layden’s activities, adding Layden’s removal from all pastoral ministry, announced after his arrest, remains in effect.
