CD Review – Candiria
Toying with Insanities [Rarities Compilation] Vol. 1
Rising Pulse

Candiria’s truly fascinating history is as bizarre as their music. With the kind of experimentation they have been doing since the early 90′s, the paths they have taken both musically and personally are not that surprising after all. Considered dead as of 2004, the band spawned back on the scene recently with the long-due release of Kiss The Lie, an album lost in label’s thorns of production cycle. Even though it was a major release, it was only an echo of the past, as Candiria in it’s current line-up can only be heading in a different direction.

Toying with Insanities is a four-volume set of rarities and remixes that generally seems to be an effort to organize and reemphasize their legacy and Volume 1 is as good a start as it can be. A strike of music without boundaries, the CD lives up to show Candiria’s true nature and the unique talent that generated the mind-blowing “urban fusion” in the past that inspires musicians to this day. They have never been running after cliches or hype and this release is a discrete yet firm attest that intelligent music isn’t dead.

For people unfamiliar with Candiria’s previous work the compilation might be hard to swallow, as it requires thinking out of the box and an open mind. Beyond the jazzy and ambient passages combined with almost metalcore like riffs lies the precious idea that music and innovation does not necessarily mean a proper rhytm-section, catchy melodies and accessible lyrics. You will only be able to appreciate this record if you work on it, dwell deep in the music and through it’s influence find that it’s not you who’s bending reality here. It’s Candiria that’s bending it for you.

Toying with Insanities is a great collectors item, in stores September 9th.
