Meta Gallery Presents: Sacrifices For The Sanguinary Age – New Works By Vincent Castiglia
September 8th, 2010 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin
Meta Gallery is pleased to present Sacrifices For The Sanguinary Age, new works by Vincent Castiglia. In his first exhibition with the gallery as well as his first in Canada, Castiglia delivers his latest body of work with the same cunning skill and depth of visionary dimension for which he has become best known. Representing the dark and otherworldly realms of the human psyche, Castiglia’s work elucidates the fragility and innocence of life and is at the foreground of the contemporary visionary practice.
Drawing on a variety of inspiration, from mythical and metaphysical religious symbolism, to HR Giger, to many in the fantastic visionary tradition, Castiglia’s figurative surrealist works utilize iconography from various mystic traditions, occultism and witchcraft to create a vision of humanity as struggling, and eventually surrendering to, its own mortality. With the life/death/rebirth cycle as prominent themes in the artist’s works, a unified vision of a flawed yet redeemable mankind emerges. One whose hope lies in the strength garnered from the struggle itself.
The medium used to achieve these beautiful works further lends itself to the allegorical quality of the artist’s expression. Castiglia’s own blood is the sole substance used to create the wide tonal range found in these works. During this process, Castiglia’s paintings become a metaphor for his life and art, and visa versa, as he works to resolve his own impermanence and invites the viewer to contemplate the same within themselves.
Vincent Castiglia was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1982. After attending Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School the artist decided not to attend art school and instead focus on his painting full time. He is the first American artist to be given a solo exhibition of his works at the HR Giger Museum in Gruyere, Switzerland as well his art has been exhibited worldwide from New York to San Francisco, Hollywood to London. His work has been featured on television and in print as well as an entry in “The International Encyclopedia of Fantastic, Surrealistic, Symbolist and Visionary Artists.” He lives and works in NYC.
Sacrifices For The Sanguinary Age will be on view from September 10 to October 10, 2010. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 12-6. The opening reception will be on Friday September 10 from 7-10pm. Artist in attendance.
Vincent will be giving an artist talk at the gallery on Saturday September 11 from 1-3pm.
Please email Jody Polishchuk at jp@metagallery.com to be put on the preview list for this exhibition or for further information.

CD Review: DJ Muggs Vs. Ill Bill – Kill Devil Hills

CD Review – DJ Muggs Vs. Ill Bill
Kill Devil Hills
Fat Beats
No stranger to collaborations, Cypress Hill’s resident Producer/DJ teams up with Non Phixion lyrical warrior Ill Bill. The results? Exactly what those of us who know that today’s main stream hip-hop is lacking grit are craving. A classic hip-hop record, with actual vinyl sampling (musical and other), songs built up on MPC beats, and gothic bass lines, and lyrics about social and political alienation.
The first joint up, aptly entitled “Cult Assassin”, starts off with a military drum roll into some blaxploitation-type string samples, while Bill focuses his lyrics on the dark hearts of an inner-city soldier, and what he must do to survive day to day. “Disturbing the war, murder the law”, pretty much sums it up.
“We got a black president, the aliens will be here soon”, starts off “Illuminati 666″, and sets the tone for a jam addressing a myriad of conspiracy theories, while “Amputated Saints” sees Bill team up with B-Real for a track about taking out impostors in the rap game.
It’s refreshing to hear Muggs produce heavy hip-hop bouncers, and it’s clear that he’s as passionate about the craft as he ever was, with elements of his past work present in every track. There is the holy feeling sampling of sitars and choirs heard on his collaboration with Tricky and Grease from 1998′s brilliant Juxtapose, and also the shaolin claps and rumbling bass from Skull & Bones.
This is a record that will make fans of each artist interested in hearing the others back catalogue, and a necessary piece of hip-hop to keep the skeptics heads ringing in 2010.

KauseZ: MUSIC THERAPY RIDE TO FUND NIMBUS RECORDING STUDIO AT BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
August 30th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by admin

Committee members of the 9th annual Music Therapy Ride have announced that a percentage of the funds raised from this year’s ride will go to the Nimbus School of Recording Arts in order to build an in-house recording studio at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
Co-founder of the Nimbus School of Recording Arts and legendary producer, Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), is the visionary behind the project. His own daughter spent many years in Children’s Hospital, and in that time he has grown close to the cause of Music Therapy.
“We are grateful to the Vancouver Music Therapy Ride committee for helping us make this dream a reality”, says Richardson. Recording students from Nimbus will work with Music Therapists at the hospital to run the studio. “This is what Nimbus is about”, says Richardson, who is insistent on his students learning how to give back to their community.
This philanthropic approach has given cancer patient Megan McNeil the opportunity to create and record her own song, “Will To Survive”. A talented songwriter who has been fighting cancer since she was 16, Megan decided to record a track to lift the spirits of the other kids in the chemotherapy ward.
Now 19, her single, “Will To Survive” is available on iTunes, and the corresponding video is approaching 10,000 views on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9pHISnIj2Y&feature=player_embedded.
The song will be played on radio stations nationwide starting in September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
In addition to the recording studio at BC Children’s Hospital, the Music Therapy Ride is working with Nimbus to design mobile recording studios – “Band Wagon 1” and “Band Wagon 2” – which will allow Music Therapists to work with patients at their bedside.
The Music Therapy Ride is a charity motorcycle ride from Vancouver to Whistler designed to raise funds for community-based music therapy services in B.C. To date, it has raised over $350,000 for the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund. Confirmed celebrities for this year’s ride include Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida – with more names to be announced in the upcoming weeks.
The 9th annual Music Therapy Ride will take place on September 18th, 2010. All motorcycles and cars will roll out from the River Rock Casino and Resort at 9:30am.

Book Review – Cult Street Wear
By Josh Sims
Laurence King Publishing
Take a mental photo of what comes to mind when you read the word “catalogue’. Serial numbers? Lists? Boring?
Think about a clothing catalogue as if Dan The Automator put it together. This is essentially what you get with Cult Street Wear’s new coffee table book, with such notables designing the cover and liners as 123Klan and FL@33.
Within the depths of the book, one can see the newest and freshest kicks, hoodies, jewelry, and every other type of clothing being modeled by heavyweight hipsters such as The Neptunes and Ice Cube, but also catch a glimpse of the history behind the designs. Take a look at Pharrell and Co. sporting his own Ice Creams clothing line, and others wearing Nike, A Bathing Ape, Obey, Zoo York, and every other style of clothing you’d see at a Misshapes party in New York.
The booked functions not really as a shopping guide, but rather a history book and a photography book, as every shot is full of detail, exploding off the page with color and beautiful people.
Within it’s pages, the book also showcases the artwork of -and explains the stories of- the visual artists, musicians, sports figures and advertising execs that have molded what we perceive as hip from LA to NY, London to Tokyo, since 1980 to now. This history is collected and arranged here in 900 photos and illustrations, in a publication that’s literally never been done before.
Think not of this piece of literature as trying to sell you something, but instead educate you on the roots and origins of the clothing, artwork, graffiti and everything else that goes along with hip-hop culture and style.

CD Review: Cephalic Carnage – Misled by Certainty
August 28th, 2010 Filed under: Reviews - Music by admin
CD Review – Cephalic Carnage
Misled by Certainty
Relapse
Cephalic Carnage’s Misled by Certainty may be less of an aural clusterfuck then their breakthrough Xenosapien (2007) but it is just as effective. Though the tempo is subdued, the technical virtuosity, experimental composition and inhuman sounding vocals remain, making for an album that is more layered and just as (if not more) epic than the previous. Fans expecting front to back “face-meltage” might be slightly disappointed but if anything is known of Cephalic Carnage it is that they are musically unpredictable and constantly jumping the invisible fences between metal sub-genres.
One of the biggest highlights of this album is the way the band has so masterfully threaded together different and obscure elements in a way that doesn’t sound disjointed or forced. Case in point, their use of a saxophone for “Orhwurm” Though its hard to wrap the mind around it, it works. Who knew this was possible for a metal album. The beauty of it is that Cephalic Carnage takes the risk and pulls it off.
Another example is “A King and a Thief” which combines thrash/death/metalcore, quiet and brutal all in one go. Rather than take these elements and meld them together, the differences are played against each other- making for a sound that glorifies the best in extreme metal without bastardizing anything.
No matter what presents itself, be it spoken word, clean vocals, sludge riffs, catchy verses/vocals or pure chaos, it flows.
Misled by Certainty is in stores August 31st

Film Review: The Last Exorcism – Directed By Daniel Stamm

Film Review – The Last Exorcism
Directed By Daniel Stamm
Arcade Pictures
It seems like nowadays horror films are in a period of transition. For the most part of the last decade horror flicks have been interested mainly in two things: making you jump and making you want to puke. You know how it is, guy’s walking through a darkly lit hall, guy turns because he hears something, guy decides it was nothing, then something jumps out of the shadows suddenly with a scream, making you jump in your seat, then the thing fucks the dude up; we see intestines, we see eyeballs exploding, we see shit leaking out of his now-dead sphincter, we feel like ralphing a little.
This is a scenario we’ve seen dozens and dozens of times over the past decade and it is the hallmark of a movie that is trying to scare you in the theatre. The Last Exorcism shirks that mantle with the lighting of a cigarette and the flipping of the bird in the general direction of movies that try to scare you in the theatre. Much like the film that The Last Exorcism’s title surely evokes, William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece The Exorcist, The Last Exorcism is all about making you scared as you walk through the dark parking lot to your car after the movie’s done, but it’s even more all about making you think. Set in modern-day Louisiana,
The Last Exorcism is the tale of Reverend Cotton Marcus, played by the very convincing Patrick Fabian, a former child prodigy southern preacher who’s been singing the praises of Jesus in front of the faithful and going out into the community to perform exorcisms practically his whole life, so long in fact that he never took the time to sit and think about whether he even believes in God. Finally realizing he’s lost his faith, he invites a documentary crew along on his last exorcism in order to show the practise to the world as the fraud it is. As you can imagine, it doesn’t quite work out that way. Director Daniel Stamm weaves a tale that is equal parts funny and scary but his real triumph is the unyielding humanity of both his characters and their story. This movie feels real, these characters feel like real people and we feel for them, worry for them like they were our friends.
The tagline for this film is “If you believe in God, you must believe in the Devil” but the question really put forth by this film is “if you meet the Devil, can you trust God to save you?”. The Last Exorcism is a movie that makes you think and makes you feel and when the credits roll you’ll wish it wasn’t over.

‘MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal’, To Be Released in November, 2010
August 20th, 2010 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by admin
Bazillion Points Books is proud to announce the late 2010 release of ‘MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal’, by Jeff Wagner-a former editor of Metal Maniacs magazine and veteran supporter of metal’s most risk-taking bands. Wagner analyzes the heady side of metal in this exhaustive history of a relentlessly ambitious musical subculture. The book features extensive original artwork throughout by VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin, including the lavish front cover which can be viewed at this location.
The book’s foreword was penned by PORCUPINE TREE founder Steven Wilson. Revered in progressive rock circles, the multi-talented Wilson is also highly respected by metalheads as producer of three landmark Opeth albums. As he writes: “In Jeff Wagner’s MEAN DEVIATION, we now have a definitive book on the relationship between metal and progressive music, and the myriad variation of styles that it has given rise to…In the meantime, metal continues to mutate and evolve, sometimes in the most unexpected ways, demonstrating that it is far from spent and is, in fact, the most flexible of musical forms.”
Beginning with 1970s progressive rock acts Rush and King Crimson, MEAN DEVIATION unfurls a colorful tapestry of sounds and styles, from the “Big Three” of 1980s prog metal-Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater-to extreme pioneers Voivod, Watchtower, and Arcturus. As sparks of inspiration spread to obscure outposts in Scandinavia, Florida, and Japan, progressive metal burst into full creative flame with the successes of prog metal overlords Opeth, Meshuggah, Tool, Between the Buried and Me, and many others.
“One thing prog metal certainly is, is metal,” Wagner continues. “Hard and bold and brash, but refined, adulterated, and mutated. Progressive metal is heavy metal taken somewhere illuminating and sometimes bizarre.”
Weighing in at 400 pages, the heavily-illustrated book includes a 16-page color photo insert, a constellation of appendixes, and a full index. For more information, and to preorder, visit:

Live Review – Exodus w/ Holy Grail, Bonded by Blood, Titans Eve and Auroch
Tuesday, August 17, 2010
The Rickshaw Theatre, Vancouver, BC
Living pretty much directly on the US/Canada border, us Vancouverite metal-heads have grown accustomed to canceled sets do to border issues. It happens all the time. Unfortunately last night’s March of Brutality show at the Rickshaw Theatre was no different, with Malevolent Creation forced to drop out of all 3 Canadian dates due to immigration issues. Luckily, two of Vancouver’s local acts Titans Eve and Auroch stepped up to complete the bill, making it an evening of 100% thrash metal.
Auroch kicked off their set with “Acolyte” from their latest release Stranger Aeons. There was already a good crowd in the old theatre by the time Auroch hit the stage and their unique brand of thrash and self-described Lovecraftian metal was met with a strong crowd response. Having already opened for Woods of Ypres alongside Titans Eve during the bands’ Eastern Canadian tour, Auroch are definitely off to a good start as a young, up and coming, Canadian thrash metal band.
Up next, Titans Eve churned out their own unique brand of thrash metal. Brothers Kyle and Brian Gamblin (vocals/guitar) did a great job stirring up the crowd, which to be honest was already engaged and ready to throw down the moment they started playing. With a short but sweet set with crowd favorites including “The Tides of Doom”, “Serpent Rising”, “Into the Fire” and “Living Lifeless,” Titans Eve left it all on stage and made a strong impression. Keep your eyes peeled as TE prepare for their first US tour this September.
Up next, California’s Bonded by Blood mixed things a bit with a blast from the past. Though their influences, or should I say, influence, is no secret, Bonded by Blood are far from an Exodus spinoff. They are more fittingly described as a young take on an older, well established style. Though the crowd took a breather from the mosh pit for most of their set, there was no shortage of head banging while the boys tore through tracks such as “Feed the Beast”, “Parasitic Infection” and “Necropsy” with a nonstop, infectious energy. Dedicating the latter “For all of you who love to skin the dead…” the boys finished the last half of their performance with the same intensity they had from the beginning.
Also from California, Holy Grail took over the responsibility of main support and killed it. With a more traditional heavy metal sound, they offered something different from the rest of the lineup and the crowd ate it up. Clean vocals and solid hooks, alongside raw, epic riffs, made for a sound that walks a fine line between NWOBHM and gritty thrash. They were definitely a crowd favorite and their high-energy and entertaining stage presence inspired a lively mosh pit. Their set included “As Fast as a Shark” and “Fight to Kill” from their debut EP Improper Burial as well as “Crisis in Utopia” from their upcoming album of the same name. For a band that seemingly came out of nowhere last year, these guys are well on their way to becoming a regular fixture in the metal scene.
Finally metal’s favorite fabulous disaster hit the stage, primed to deliver some good, friendly, violent fun. Having already seen Exodus several times, it seems that they are nearly incapable of putting on a bad show and last night proved the same. With a tight sound, awesome songs both classic and new and a fun stage show, Exodus tore the roof off the tightly packed Rickshaw. What was great about the venue choice for this one is the huge floor space and awesome view from every corner of the room. Though there was a barricade, the lack of security in front made for a very personal, in-your-face stage set up. This sort of set up also brought out the best in front man Rob Dukes who spent the night pointing people out from onstage and instigating some rabid circle pits. Love him or hate him, Dukes is definitely one of metal’s most aggressive front men; you can always expect some crazy shit to come out of his mouth in between songs and some good crowd slagging if they don’t move around.
The only main difference between this show and the last time Exodus played Vancouver is the inclusion of tracks from their latest album Exhibit B: the Human Condition including the show closer “Good Riddance.” Besides some new material everything went as expected and the crowd, having survived 5 hours of the toxic waltz, left satisfied and zombie-like.
