Art Is The New Rock and Roll As Green Day Manager Brings UK Painter CHARMING BAKER To New York For Solo Show

April 1st, 2010 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

Art has always has always been a comfortable bedfellow with rock music. Think Elvis and Warhol, John and Yoko, hip hop and graffiti.

But is art now turning into the new rock and roll itself?

Pat Magnarella, the man behind rock giants Green Day, is putting his hugely successful management experience behind a fast-rising UK painter called Charming Baker.

Magnarella – who also manages The Goo Goo Dolls and Oscar winning singer songwriter Ryan Bingham – explains the reason behind the move: “I want to use my experience with guiding and nurturing the careers of musicians to create a similar platform for talented artists. And Charming’s talent is undeniable.”

The relationship has already borne fruit with a controversial video, shot in the style of a music promo, to publicize the artist’s work.

And, like the best rock and rollers, Charming Baker comes armed with his own brand of notoriety

Along with a paintbrush, the artist also drills, saws and shoots his paintings. A film of Charming blasting one of his works with a shotgun has become cult viewing on YouTube.

“I don’t think that shooting a painting should necessarily take away any part of its decorative appeal,” comments Charming. “If anything it becomes a conversation piece.”

Charming’s upcoming show in New York will feature a painting of Michelle Obama with her face sawn off and stitched back together. The artist will also invite members of the public to crucify themselves with a full-size interactive painting of Christ’s cross.

Asked to describe his work, Charming says: “The effect I’m aiming for is that slightly unnerving feeling you get when you have your arse patted in public – but you’re not exactly sure who’s patting it”.

Adds Pat Magnarella: “Charming’s work is as playful as his attitude. His skill with a paintbrush, however, is awesome.”

Art meets controversy: how very rock and roll.

Charming Baker’s New York Show, STUPID HAS A NEW HERO, opens May 14 and runs through May 30 at NYSG, 154 Stanton Street (@ Suffolk) on New York’s Lower East Side. The Private View is 13 May.

WEAR OR DIE: We hate fashion so much, we are feeling ACTUAL PAIN

March 11th, 2010 Filed under: Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

WHAT: Actual Pain is here to outfit the true youth of the world with Satanic cult clothing. With heavy influences from all things underground, the grim horror of our daily world, and ancient religious practices, they hope to change the way 2% of the world looks for the better.

WHO: Actual Pain started in 2006 as the brainchild of designer TJ Cowgill (Book of Black Earth frontman). Driven to insanity by heavy metal, his concepts are gore fueled nightmares that are applied to the tee-shirt medium, then unleashed upon the masses in a cruel and unforgiving manor. Actual Pain is his demented child, bonded by blood to the cult art of Black, Death, Grind, and Gore Metal! Posers beware!

WHERE: Actual Pain is also dedicated to the highest standards of printing and fabrics, with a focus on quality over quantity and made locally in Seattle Washington (no sweatshops!). That’s why most everything they do is limited to each season and never reprinted. With the market becoming over saturated with new “streetwear” brands, Actual Pain is here to give people a way to stand out and say something different.

ABORT Recommends…Ralph Bakshi Fine Art- ‘Streets’, March 21 – May 9th, NYC

March 11th, 2010 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

NEW YORK, NY – Ralph Bakshi will return to Animazing Gallery in SoHo for a reception where his altogether new series of fine art paintings will be debuted in an exhibition entitled The Streets. This bold series of mixed-media construction/paintings was inspired by the gritty and colorful neighborhoods of Bakshi’s youth in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

MoCCA, New York’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and Bill Plympton will present a lifetime achievement award to Mr. Bakshi at the opening reception on Friday, March 19th, from 6-9PM (by invitation). A public meet and greet reception takes place on Saturday March 20th, 2-5PM. Admission is free and open to the public. Exhibition runs through May 15th. Animazing Gallery is located at 54 Greene Street at Broome in SoHo. Hours of operation are Mon-Sat 10AM-7PM and Sun 11AM-6PM. For more information log onto www.animazing.com or call 212-226-7374.

Throughout an artistic career spanning more than half a century, Ralph Bakshi’s secret passion has always been fine art. Although he has become a renowned film director, Bakshi has remained a sedulously dedicated self-taught painter, and this body of work is as sophisticated as his films are outrageous. The Artist has created multi-media pieces that are emotionally layered works, and clearly a departure from his past figurative works. Bakshi builds up his surfaces with elements of wood, nails, and other found objects. The artist deconstructs the sculptural elements at some point during the process, and then uses the ravaged sculpture as a canvas, continuing to paint and repaint the accumulating textures, going deeper and deeper into what he thinks he sees.

In this ongoing process of building up and taking away, Ralph transforms his reality into sculptured abstraction. Inspired by every single memory of his life in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Artist produces work that is as gritty, colorful, and dynamic as New York. Bakshi’s paintings are derived from a lifetime of loving the artistic peeling of the paint on old Brownsville walls; the play of sunlight on their surfaces that changed them every few minutes. These paintings are the closest thing to realism that Ralph can imagine, although they appear to be abstract.

ABORT Recommends… The Porn Saints Art Show, Sunday, March 28, 2010 Austin, TX

March 1st, 2010 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

Painting, drawing, mixed-media photography and film works by Naomi Arton, B-9, Francesco D’ Isa, Jeff Faerber, Katelan Foisy, Michael Forbes, Aunia Kahn, Zoe Lacchei, Steven Leyba, Danny Malbeouf, Robert Morris, Van Rijn, Natalie Shau, Ellen Stagg, Pamela Tait, Andrew Tong, Nathalie Winans and Kris Wlodarski.

Artworks are based upon the idea that porn stars may be “sanctified” by their performances. Pornsaints is an artistic approach to porn, a pornographic approach to art, a pornoartistic approach to religion.

The Porn Church is the art side of porn and the porn side of art. It’s a porn-art community, a new wave from internet’s gutters, raising to consecrate underground stars. Art needs something naughty, porn need something classy, and here we are.

As D’Isa wrote in his essay “Pornsaints – a brief essay about pornography and transcendence”, the definition of a Pornsaint is inspired by many religious concepts and beliefs. It’s closer to Mystic and Oriental definitions (Taoism most of all) more than Christian. If God is the most unreachable concept, the saint, being closer to God, renounces human features and identity. A cool separation from the world, like an extreme behavior, is one way to overstep humanity. “…the pornsaint dwells in the house of the saints, but got there traveling a different way, and came in knocking at another door.”

We are the Porn Church and we make the Porn Culture. Everything classy is welcome at pornsaints.org – vulgarity included.

Company/organisation info: Founded by the artist Francesco D’Isa in early 2007, Pornsaints is based in Italy, and made up of artists from around the world working in an array of mediums ranging from digital video to oil and canvas. Porn stars featured in Pornsaints pieces have included Madison Young, Kylie Ireland, Stoya, Sasha Grey, Kimberly Kane, Charlotte Stokely and Katsuni.

To learn more about our philosophical background, I invite you to read the Pornsaints essay here. To see our artworks and more, please go to www.pornsaints.org

Last Rites Gallery proudly presents…The OPENING RECEPTION for solo exhibitions of new work from both Fred Harper & Nick Baxter, This Saturday, February 6th @ 7PM

February 4th, 2010 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

On Saturday, February 6th at 7pm, NYC’s Last Rites Gallery will open two solo exhibitions of new work from artists Fred Harper and Nick Baxter. For years Fred Harper has been a fanboy favorite for his artwork on such well known comic books as Conan, Doctor Strange and of course Spider-Man!

At the same time, in an industry not all-together disconnected from the comic book world, Nick Baxter has become globally sought after by tattoo lovers of all kinds for his own unique brand of tattooing, employing fantastical imagery and a bright, almost neon-like color palette. What many people do not know about these two incredibly talented artists, is that while the world has watched them sling ink on paper and skin over the past several years, the two have individually been devoting every free moment they have on painting.

Harper’s large, loose, darkly humorous depictions of female cyborgs and the like have a sickly sweet quality that both attack and embrace the viewer at the same time. Baxter, on the other hand, works on small surfaces in tight, intricate detail, made up of wet skin, gleaming blood and various sharp objects throughout. Although there styles are vastly different, they share the same intense desire to show the fine art world what they can do when they’re not rocking their respective industries.

Solo exhibitions of new work for both Fred Harper and Nick Baxter open on Saturday, February 6th, 7-11pm at Last Rites Gallery, 511 W. 33rd Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues (3 blocks from Penn Station), 3rd floor, New York, NY 10001. Show runs February 6th through February 28th, 2010.

ABORTIST: Patrick “Star27” Deignan (St. Petersburg, FL)

WHO: Patrick “Star27” Deignan

WHAT: Pop-Surrealist painter

WHERE: St. Petersburg, FL. USA

WHEN: Next (booked) show: The Alternative Café, Sept. 10, 2010, Seaside, CA.  : Lowbrow Tarot Project, Billy Shire Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA.  10/09/10

WHY: Patrick Deignan “Star27” was born February 17, 1980. At a very young age he felt different, separate from others and quickly found solace in drawing, painting, and music making. In 1998 he left Connecticut to follow his dream on a scholarship to Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts.

By the end of that year his inner demons had caught up with him, and addiction became his life. There were attempts to return to school, with a short stay at San Francisco Art Institute, and an even shorter stay at Ringling School of Art and Design. Addiction demanded all of him and left no time for the process of creation. There was no need to, no drive to and no love of the process anymore. Having little to show for what would be a nine year period; he had put away the brush and thought he would never paint again.

After a near fatal night in 2007 he would soon adopt his moniker, Star27, a tongue-in-cheek nod at his past. After much encouragement he rekindled his dream, with a love and drive like never before.

Patrick “Star27” Deignan’s work focuses on the vices, weaknesses, and shortcomings of the human race. Every piece becomes deeply personal, something he has seen, felt, or experienced.

He sees not only his paintings, but Patrick himself as a work in progress. With each piece, something new is learned, something is discarded, and better, clearer ideas of where he is going and where he has been become apparent.

ABORT Recommends…DARK POP 2.0 Opening this Saturday, January 9th @ 7PM, Last Rites Gallery (NYC)

January 6th, 2010 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

Last Rites Gallery has again decided to find out what several of today’s brightest art stars are capable of when asked to create ONE piece of what could be considered truly ‘dark art’. Many artists find themselves in a nice groove of creating a certain mood or emotion through their work and have, understandably, become quite comfortable following this path in their art-making. We were curious, however, what would happen if things were to get a little uncomfortable, as the artist challenged themselves to search through new or buried feelings and emotions, the kind which might find their place on the ‘darker’ side of the artistic spectrum. With that in mind, Last Rites Gallery proudly presents “Dark Pop 2.0″: A collection of truly ‘dark art’ from an incredibly talented and diverse group of artists who would normally never get anywhere near this stuff! If the first Dark Pop was any indication, Dark Pop 2.0 is guaranteed to astound.

Participating Artists Include:
AIKO (Aiko Nakagawa), Lisa Alisa, Esao Andrews, John Cebollero, Benjamin Clarke, Joshua Clay, Molly Crabapple, Amy Crehore, Yoko d’Holbachie, Leslie Ditto, Mickey Edtinger, Mark Elliott, Eric Fortune, GAIA, Stella Im Hultberg, Sarah Joncas, Aya Kakeda, Ben Kehoe, Dan-ah Kim, Daniel Hyun Lim (Fawn Fruits), Danni Shinya Luo, David MacDowell, Mike Maxwell, Simone Maynard, Dennis McNett, Tara McPherson, Michael Page, Nathan Lee Pickett, Leslie Reppeteaux, Mijn Schatje, Tin, Dan Witz, Jaeran Won and more.

ABORT Recommends…THE GRIFTERS ART SHOW, Dec 4th – Jan 16th, 2010, Soho, London, UK

December 7th, 2009 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

Paint the town red. And green. And orange. And yellow. And blue… And so, to cap off the first year in the splendid surroundings of our new Rathbone Place gallery, Lazarides will be bringing some of the biggest names in street art to London for a spectacular group show where much of the art will be nowhere near the cosy confines of our glamorous gallery.

Titled The Grifters, the December event will focus on all new work from the Outsider artists in all manner of mediums, from sculpture to installation, canvas to collage, paper to poster, performance to photography. Alongside the gallery offerings, a series of paintings and street sculptures will begin to pop up all over the City from the end of November right through December, so keep your eyes peeled (unless you work for the council, in which case we don’t know what you’re talking about, we’ve never heard of any of these artists, ever).

Those of you sharing a combined love of art and staying warm, worry not, for you’ll be relieved to hear that the Rathbone Place gallery will be turning up the heat in more ways than one, and handing over all four floors of the gallery to our Outsiders group of artists, with a special installation from Lucy McLauchlan covering the entire staircase.

But that’s n-n-n-not all, folks, because simultaneously, Lazarides will be launching a brand new website for prints, posters, multiples, drawings and all manner of ephemera and collectibles at the Shop at Greek Street.

The exhibition, street interventions, and website launch will take place in our galleries at Lazarides 11 Rathbone Place, Fitzrovia, London, W1T 1HR, and SHOP at Lazarides 8 Greek Street, Soho, London, W1D 4DG, as well as out and about across the streets of London from 4th December until January 16th 2010

WHEN: Dirty Show group exhibition, Detroit 2010

WHY: I’ve always been compelled to express myself in any medium I could get my hands on. Carving, painting, photography, sculpting… but finally settled on a combination of them. For example: I will create and paint a mask, develop a costume, do a photo shoot and then take other stock pictures I’ve shot, as well as specifically directed poses, and combine them all digitally. The process can take weeks. Each piece is a compilation of literally thousands of digitally combined images. I draw my artistic inspiration from my own personal nightmares and the documented horrors committed in the name of politics and religion.

Crack art, Vancouver’s alternative art scene

November 17th, 2009 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

(Examiner.com) – Welcome to Vancouver’s downtown eastside alternative art scene. This artwork painted, drawn and scrawled by dozens of downtown eastside residents over the past decade is long gone, a bulldozers blade being the harshest of art critics. The admission was free, ambience was optional, and judging by the dozens of empty bottles strewn about, wine tasting was the de-rigeur of the day.

For posterity, the artwork was saved, thanks to my trusty Nikon, so they can one day be published. These art works likely unseen by many, unless one is attending this showing under deceased terms.

It has been said great artists suffer for their art, crack addict’s live and eventually die for their art. Their art is an expression of what their lives are all about, a transient life, fraught with the human frailties brought on by crack, most likely purchased with your spare change. Perhaps your way of supporting the arts?

This disturbing artwork will never grace the walls of the Louvre in Paris, Metropolitan museum of art, or even in our own Vancouver art gallery. Though after seeing a few art pieces in Germany drawn by the inmates of Auschwitz, perhaps suffering and dementia are a common medium?

It has been said that once an artist is dead their art appreciates in value, one wonders if the same can be said of crack art? Granted, these works of art are not drawn with choicest Parisian charcoals or painted with the finest sable hair brushes with a view overlooking a quaint french country hillside. No, these works of art are drawn much closer to home.
