ADMISSION IS A BLANKET – 2nd ANNUAL BLANKFEST QUEBEC RAISES BLANKETS FOR MONTREAL’S HOMELESS
January 28th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, Made In Canada, News/Calendar/Industry by admin
Blankfest Quebec returns for its 2nd annual blanket fundraiser benefiting Montreal’s homeless shelter, the Old Brewery Mission, on Friday, February 19th at Bar St. Laurent 2, located at 5550 St. Laurent (corner St. Viateur). Special Ops, Emery Street, Vinyl HeroThe In n Outs are proud to have answered the call in supporting the event.
“I’m really proud of this year’s line-up for Blankfest Quebec and I’m looking forward to breaking last year’s record of collecting over 500 blankets and items of clothing for Montreal’s Homeless,” commented Blankfest Quebec organizer Jon Asher.
Blankfest Quebec’s primary goal is to collect blanket, socks, underwear and non-perishable food for the homeless in Montreal on behalf of the Old Brewery Mission shelter. Montreal’s winter months are known for having temperatures well below zero and those who are homeless run the risk of frostbite and possible death due to overexposure. Blankfest Quebec, in cooperation with the Old Brewery Mission, aims to aid those who are less fortunate and keeps the homeless warm while living on the streets.
“This event is a simple one for everyone – ADMISSION IS BLANKET! I strongly urge people to come out and support this event and even if you can’t stay for the music, I ask everyone to make the effort and bring down a donation for Montreal’s homeless. People forget about the charity organizations after the holidays and that is why it is important to raise donations and aid those who are in need in our community,” says Jon Asher.
Blankfest Quebec has been organized by Jon Asher, in collaboration with the Old Mission Brewery, after Jon read about his friend, New York City indie rock veteran Kenn Rowell of The Baghdaddios, founding Blankfest in 1997 and organizing an annual blanket fundraiser in New York City.
In the past, Rowell says, Blank-Fest NYC has raised more than 6,000 total donations that have been distributed to the homeless in the New York City area and has inspired similar efforts in New Jersey, Manhattan and Nottingham, UK. Among the many distinguished artists who have performed at past international Blank-Fests are: Rothberg (EMI), Buddy Cage (Grateful Dead), Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) and Meg Griffin (Sirius Radio).
Tickets or reservations are not required: simply bring one or more blankets, socks, underwear and/or non-perishable foods to the event.
For more information, contact event organizer Jon Asher at 514-581-5780 or email ashermedia@gmail.com

Going on The Nod…X 2!: Court opens door for second injection site
January 22nd, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, Made In Canada, News/Calendar/Industry, Tales From The Eastside™ by admin
(Courier) – The nonprofit society that operates the city’s supervised drug injection site on East Hastings is reviewing a recent court ruling to see whether it can open a second facility.
Mark Townsend, executive director of the PHS Community Services Society, described the B.C. Court of Appeal’s Jan. 15 ruling as a victory for the continued operation of the Insite injection site–and possibly a new facility.
“For sure we’re going to start looking and working on a second site,” Townsend told the Courier. “But the form that site would take is going to get a little bit dictated by what this new ruling would mean. But that doesn’t mean one is opening tomorrow.”
Operators hope to open a second facility similar to the Insite supervised injection site on East Hastings.View Larger Image View Larger Image
Operators hope to open a second facility similar to the Insite supervised injection site on East Hastings.
The court of appeal’s lengthy 2-1 ruling, which is available on the court’s website, backs a May 2008 B.C. Supreme Court decision to allow Insite to operate indefinitely.
Insite was set to close June 30, 2008 but B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ian Pitfield granted staff and users a constitutional exemption from the country’s drug laws.

A Welcome Letter from The 2010 Poverty Olympics Organizing Committee
January 16th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, Made In Canada, News/Calendar/Industry, Tales From The Eastside™ by admin
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to Vancouver. You are coming to one of the greatest cities in the world: eye-popping scenery, efficient services, moderate climate, relaxed and diverse population.
The United Nations survey on livability rates Vancouver in the top handful of cities on earth. And in 2010, we’re going to host the winter Olympics! What a great opportunity to enjoy Vancouver’s attractions — including all the Olympic legacies, like new stadiums, highways and tourist sights.
But one legacy that won’t be so enjoyable is the thousands of homeless people on the streets of Vancouver. You can’t help seeing them as you walk around downtown, and in many other neighbourhoods around the city.
Unless we do something about this shameful situation, visitors in 2010 will be treated to a city with more homeless people than athletes competing in the Games!
Grinding poverty and growing homelessness are happening despite some bold promises to create a positive Olympic legacy — promises such as building more social housing, reducing homelessness, and not displacing poor people to make way for Olympics-driven development.
So we are organizing new games that reflect the unique local flavour of the 2010 host city — the Poverty Olympics. The first annual games took place on Sunday February 3, in the Downtown Eastside (Vancouver’s poorest neighbourhood).
We’ve asked the International Olympic Committee to make these games part of the official 2010 program. We hope that shining the international spotlight on the dark side of our prosperous city and province might finally convince our governments to take action.
We hope, dear visitor, that you’ll take a few minutes to look around… Learn more about the poverty amid plenty… Help us make change by taking some simple actions… And don’t forget to invite your friends to visit our fair city!
Sincerely,
Poverty Olympics Organizing Committee

STATEMENT BY WYCLEF JEAN ON HAITI EARTHQUAKE
January 14th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by admin
Photo – - Sarah Hamilton
The following is a statement by Wyclef Jean on yesterday’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti:
“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and several very strong aftershocks – struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince. I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.
President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.”
Many people have already reached out to see what they can do right now. We are asking those interested Canadians to please visit www.Yele.org and click on DONATE.

Famed drummers target Sudan violence
January 10th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by admin
ABOVE : Stewart Copeland of The Police
(UPI) – Musician Jamie Catto said he and several popular drummers created a film
that opposes the increasing violence in the African country of Sudan.
Catto said the film “Beat for Peace” begins with drumming in Sudan that expands worldwide as drummers from bands like Radiohead, The Police and Pink Floyd take part in opposition to the violence threatening Sudan, EuroNews.net reported Sunday.
“The violence that could kick off there is so horrific, on a par with Dafur and everything. Hundreds of thousands dying and being displaced. Could we drum up an idea, something that could get everyone’s attention so that this year is focused fully on making sure there isn’t horrific violence there, in all the kinds of ways that it could kick off,” Catto said.

Rapper Keith Murray travels to Mozambique for World AIDS Day
December 1st, 2009 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by admin
Artist recalls losing mother and sister to deadly disease
Legendary hip hop artist Keith Murray is in Mozambique on a global mission to draw more awareness to children suffering from HIV/AIDS as part of World AIDS day — Dec.1.
Murray’s trip includes a number of concerts, public appearances and charity work in Mozambique through Dec. 7. Part of the trip includes visiting the orphans in the village of Maputo, the country’s capital, as well as the ABC organization in Mozambique.
The trip has a very personal connection for the 37-year-old Murray. The native New York rapper lost his mother to HIV when he was 20 and then his sister to the deadly disease when he was 23.
“The impact that HIV and AIDS can have on a person and a family is something that I know on a very personal level, which is why I was so determined to make this trip,” says Murray. “The most painful part is watching people close to you go through it and feeling that there’s nothing you can do to help.”
It’s estimated that roughly 1.8 million of Mozambique’s nearly 20 million residents or 16 percent are infected with AIDS. Orphans reportedly account for 510,000 of the country’s AIDS cases.
The first AIDS case in Mozambique was diagnosed in 1986. Mozambique is where one of the first organizations was formed to spearhead the fight against AIDS, the National AIDS Commission.
Murray’s outreach efforts in Mozambique begin with a concert in Maputo at the Maxaquene Pavilion Dec. 2. His visit will also include a December 3, visit at a children’s orphanage and work-shop with young students to openly discuss issues around HIV/AIDS.
“I think talking about helps,” says Murray.
Tobias Bradford, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique, said they are thrilled to have Murray in Mozambique for the World AIDS Day concerts and events.
“We believe that his combination of a compelling personal history, and his ability to reach youth through his music and messages will help tens of thousands of young Mozambicans make more positive choices.,” says Bradford. “At the same time, his visit will generate donations that provide food and other necessities to hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children. This project has the potential for enormous impact across the country.”
Murray’s outreach visit to the area also includes a December 4, concert in Beira center of Mozambique and several other guest appearances wrapping up with an autograph signing Dec. 7.
“Seeing the impact that HIV/AIDS has had in Mozambique has made that much more focused on bringing more attention to the disease,” says Murray. “It puts a lot of things in perspective on how much more we need to be doing on a global level to deal with this disease.”
Keith Murray’s rap career began as a member of the rap trio “Def Squad, which included rapper “Redman and Erick Sermon.
Widely considered to be one of the greatest MCs of all time, Murray shot to national stardom with his first album The Most Beautifullest Thing in This World, released in 1994 on Jive Records. Murray, who has recorded 7 albums, is currently working on his 8th LP due out some time next year.

Troy Westwood – Little Hawk, Byron Hurt among the few to raise awareness to a male audience about violence against women

Troy Westwood – Little Hawk, Winnipeg-based singer-songwriter, has a message for men: staying silent about violence against women makes you a part of the problem. He tells them: take action now. Take responsibility to end violence against our mothers, our sisters, our daughters and every woman we do not know, she who is still a part of us.
And Troy is not standing alone with his message. Read this edition of Women Making Waves, which, for the first time in its 25-year history, opens its pages to the voices of men who are working – not pledging – but working to end violence against women.
Byron Hurt, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, writer and an anti-sexist activist, writes about the first time he spoke out against men’s violence against women. His work continues. Dennis Danforth Jr, a member of the Oneida First Nation, describes how he teaches children to honour and respect women and, through his work with Masc Magazine, encourages men to accept that they bear the largest responsibility to end violence against women. Sebastian Roberts’ life was transformed through a personal tragedy leading him to work in Africa where he came to understand that “Sexism is an invisible plague that is taking the lives of women around the world.” He intends to return to Africa to do his part to end, “this chauvinistic madness.”
Over the past two years, Battered Women’s Support Services has worked within communities of men to welcome them into the movement to end violence against women. In this issue of Women Making Waves, we report on the power of men’s commitment to anti-violence work.

Help Needed To Fund Beds For The Homeless in Vancouver
October 9th, 2009 Filed under: KauseZ, Made In Canada, News/Calendar/Industry by admin
Last night over 200 homeless people slept on the floor and pews of First United Church in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. It will be a similar scene tonight.
To provide temporary beds for the homeless who seek shelter in the church, First United is reaching out to the community and asking for help in purchasing a number of bed-bug resistant, metal bunk beds.
“Each of the bunks will be used inside the church to provide sleeping space for two homeless people now sleeping on the floor,” says Rev. Ric Matthews of First United.
“These temporary beds will take up no more space than is presently occupied by people sleeping in pews and on the floor. But they will provide a little bit of comfort, dignity and a healthier situation for the many of the homeless who seek shelter in the church.”
The church is seeking donations of any amount to help purchase the bunks, which cost approximately $500 each.
