ABORT Recommends…COVER STORY VOLUME TWO: Odd, Obscure, And Outrageous Album Art

March 21st, 2010 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry by admin

COVER STORY VOLUME TWO: Odd, Obscure, And Outrageous Album Art, the second installment in the COVER STORY series from Wax Poetics Books, continues a graphic narration of the vibrant subculture of record collecting through the art of the album cover. This volume focuses specifically on strange and bizarre record covers, selected by the staff of Wax Poetics and major collectors of music’s avant-garde.

The COVER STORY series vividly explores an element of music culture that has withered with the advent of MP3s and digital downloading. Vinyl records tell their stories visually as much as they do aurally, and the record cover—eye candy for the music lover—speaks a language rooted in the environment and era of the music itself. COVER STORY VOLUME TWO celebrates the products of music’s most eclectic and eccentric figures—those whose artistic visions were so absurd and grandiose, they often extended beyond the boundaries of the recording and onto the album covers themselves.

First published in December 2001, Brooklyn-born Wax Poetics hit newsstands with a new vision for music journalism, creating a bridge between the past and present of hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul, reggae, disco, and Latin music. Although originally created for a concentrated market of music aficionados, the magazine’s audience has grown exponentially, making musical anthropologists out of average music listeners and spawning a soul renaissance, complete with comeback tours and sophomore efforts. Wax Poetics illuminates the dark corners of our sonic past, while also striving to give new and innovative artists the credit they truly deserve.

ABORT Recommends…PUBLIC ENEMY Live in Concert – May 25th, Calgary, AB

Public Enemy, arguably Hip Hop’s most recognizable, influential and possibly controversial group, are going back on tour. Don’t miss them, when they make their Calgary stop at the Whiskey on May 25. The show will feature all members of the group including Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Griff, the S1W’s and DJ Lord!

Public Enemy transcends the confines of rap and pop music, remaining one of the African Ameri- can community’s most important messengers, digital music’s greatest champions, and a rare rap group who need not rely on misogynistic and pro-violent lyrics. The group burst onto both the rap and pop music world in 1987 with their first single, “Public Enemy #1,” a startling combination of Chuck D’s commanding orations, Hank Shocklee’s layered cacophony of musical noise, and Flavor Flav’s show-stopping antics to keep the message entertaining. The song is not only known for in- troducing a whole new sound to the rap genre, but for giving the group their name.

A month later, Public Enemy released their debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show; the world re- sponded, and Public Enemy became stars overnight, both at home and abroad. Then came the classic It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back in 1988, considered to be one of the most im- portant records ever released, and voted the Number One rap album of all time. Release after re- lease, from the lead single “Fight the Power” of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, which became the group’s signature song, to Fear of a Black Planet, to the soundtrack of He Got Game, and the po- litically charged Apocalypse 91 – The Enemy Strikes Black, among others, Public Enemy has con- tinued and will continue to be a driving force in Hip Hop and music in general.

ABORT Recommends…Ralph Bakshi Fine Art- ‘Streets’, March 21 – May 9th, NYC

March 11th, 2010 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

NEW YORK, NY – Ralph Bakshi will return to Animazing Gallery in SoHo for a reception where his altogether new series of fine art paintings will be debuted in an exhibition entitled The Streets. This bold series of mixed-media construction/paintings was inspired by the gritty and colorful neighborhoods of Bakshi’s youth in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

MoCCA, New York’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, and Bill Plympton will present a lifetime achievement award to Mr. Bakshi at the opening reception on Friday, March 19th, from 6-9PM (by invitation). A public meet and greet reception takes place on Saturday March 20th, 2-5PM. Admission is free and open to the public. Exhibition runs through May 15th. Animazing Gallery is located at 54 Greene Street at Broome in SoHo. Hours of operation are Mon-Sat 10AM-7PM and Sun 11AM-6PM. For more information log onto www.animazing.com or call 212-226-7374.

Throughout an artistic career spanning more than half a century, Ralph Bakshi’s secret passion has always been fine art. Although he has become a renowned film director, Bakshi has remained a sedulously dedicated self-taught painter, and this body of work is as sophisticated as his films are outrageous. The Artist has created multi-media pieces that are emotionally layered works, and clearly a departure from his past figurative works. Bakshi builds up his surfaces with elements of wood, nails, and other found objects. The artist deconstructs the sculptural elements at some point during the process, and then uses the ravaged sculpture as a canvas, continuing to paint and repaint the accumulating textures, going deeper and deeper into what he thinks he sees.

In this ongoing process of building up and taking away, Ralph transforms his reality into sculptured abstraction. Inspired by every single memory of his life in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Artist produces work that is as gritty, colorful, and dynamic as New York. Bakshi’s paintings are derived from a lifetime of loving the artistic peeling of the paint on old Brownsville walls; the play of sunlight on their surfaces that changed them every few minutes. These paintings are the closest thing to realism that Ralph can imagine, although they appear to be abstract.

For 20 years Psycho Les and JuJu of the Beatnuts have been pumping out gritty New York street rap with remarkable consistency and uneven quality. As producers, these two Queens natives, along with DJ Premier, are the architects of a brand of hardcore East Coast hip-hop known by its heavy drums and sparse loops. As MCs, Psycho and JuJu stick to the basics: gunplay and bedroom antics. The subject matter and music may not vary significantly from album to album, but for what they do, the Beatnuts are some of the best. Intoxicated Demons is as good a place as any to start, as it features their anthem, “Reign of the Tec,” a tribute to vengeance as exhilarating as any early-’90s rap track.

MASSIVE ATTACK ANNOUNCE FIRST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

IN FOUR YEARS IN SUPPORT OF NEW ALBUM ‘HELIGOLAND’

‘Heligoland’ Debuts At # 46 On The Billboard 200 Marking Highest U.S. Chart

Legendary Massive Attack will tour North America for the first time since 2006 in support of their newly released 5th studio album ‘Heligoland.’ The North American trek will start May 7th at Sound Academy in Toronto, ON and wrap May 30th at the Sasquatch Festival in George, WA. They will play 2 shows in NYC, Los Angeles and San Francisco with general on sale beginning March 5th (full schedule below).

Massive Attack’s latest album ‘Heligoland’ was released on Feb 9th on EMI’s Virgin Records and debuted at #46 on the Billboard 200, marking the highest U.S. chart position of the duo’s career. An all star cast join founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grand Marshall (Daddy G) on their first studio album in 7 years which includes Damon Albarn, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Elbow’s Guy Garvey and TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe. USA Today praises the collaborator’s contributions on ‘Heligoland’ by saying, “They give the gloomy grooves and chilled beats a heartbeat but also step into Massive Attack’s otherworldly sonics with enticingly haunted performances.” Albarn also plays bass on “Flat Of The Blade” and Keyboards on “Splitting The Atom” while Portishead’s Adrian Utley plays guitar on ‘Saturday Come Slow’. The band also collaborated with DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy on selected tracks. The cover artwork features an original image by Robert Del Naja.

Over the last three years Robert Del Naja has written and produced soundtracks for a number of films and documentaries, including ‘Trouble In The Water’, ’44 Inch Chest’, ‘In Prison My Whole Life’ and ‘Gomorra’, the latter for which he won the David Di Donatello Award for Best Song. Last year Massive Attack won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the Ivor Novello Awards. In September, Massive Attack headlined this year’s Bestival ahead of their first full UK tour in three years.

ABORT Recommends… The Porn Saints Art Show, Sunday, March 28, 2010 Austin, TX

March 1st, 2010 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by admin

Painting, drawing, mixed-media photography and film works by Naomi Arton, B-9, Francesco D’ Isa, Jeff Faerber, Katelan Foisy, Michael Forbes, Aunia Kahn, Zoe Lacchei, Steven Leyba, Danny Malbeouf, Robert Morris, Van Rijn, Natalie Shau, Ellen Stagg, Pamela Tait, Andrew Tong, Nathalie Winans and Kris Wlodarski.

Artworks are based upon the idea that porn stars may be “sanctified” by their performances. Pornsaints is an artistic approach to porn, a pornographic approach to art, a pornoartistic approach to religion.

The Porn Church is the art side of porn and the porn side of art. It’s a porn-art community, a new wave from internet’s gutters, raising to consecrate underground stars. Art needs something naughty, porn need something classy, and here we are.

As D’Isa wrote in his essay “Pornsaints – a brief essay about pornography and transcendence”, the definition of a Pornsaint is inspired by many religious concepts and beliefs. It’s closer to Mystic and Oriental definitions (Taoism most of all) more than Christian. If God is the most unreachable concept, the saint, being closer to God, renounces human features and identity. A cool separation from the world, like an extreme behavior, is one way to overstep humanity. “…the pornsaint dwells in the house of the saints, but got there traveling a different way, and came in knocking at another door.”

We are the Porn Church and we make the Porn Culture. Everything classy is welcome at pornsaints.org – vulgarity included.

Company/organisation info: Founded by the artist Francesco D’Isa in early 2007, Pornsaints is based in Italy, and made up of artists from around the world working in an array of mediums ranging from digital video to oil and canvas. Porn stars featured in Pornsaints pieces have included Madison Young, Kylie Ireland, Stoya, Sasha Grey, Kimberly Kane, Charlotte Stokely and Katsuni.

To learn more about our philosophical background, I invite you to read the Pornsaints essay here. To see our artworks and more, please go to www.pornsaints.org
