Live Review - Obituary w/ Goatwhore, Krisiun, The Bezerker, Warbringer
Thursday, September 17th, 2009
Calgary, Alberta
This past Thursday was a celebration of 20 years of old school Florida Death Metal, and what a better way to show support but by flooding local Calgary venue – The Warehouse.
Opening the night was Warbringer from California. Warbringer has made plenty of appearances in Calgary, Alberta often being the support act, they never disappoint their fan base. Having a slow start to the show (not for the bands) the fans seemed to act like they were deaf and just couldn’t hear the music or were just uninterested in things until a few beers had been knocked back. Getting a little bit of excitement out of the crowd was the second act – Australian brutes The Bezerker. Having never played in Calgary before some knew them and some didn’t, but for those who are the fan of extreme technical death metal as their genre defines them as got a good dose of fast blast beats, grotesque lyrical content and the gnarly sounds of bold heavy guitar. Missing their bassist for the night who I later found out after a quick chat with drummer Todd, he was very ill in the back of their bus; this did not seem to affect their live performance and was still something to be considered as a successful set
Big and Brazilian is the easiest way to describe Krisiun. Bringing all they could with death metal and more death metal, they are band when you see them live you see the dedication of the music, and the years it has taken to get them there. Krisiun presents themselves on stage with a very classic old performance, they give death metal the gratitude it deserves, a nice relief to see old school is still around. At this point, the crowd is finally starting to look more alive, a few bloody faces and broken beer bottles were starting to show the wear and tear of the pit.
Goatwhore also being a familiar face to the Calgary scene as they brought what they always have: long hair, studded wristbands and a bunch of “Hail Satan” t-shirts. Having their new album out “Carving Out the Eyes of God” it gave them a good chance to boost it up and introduce fans to what direction Goatwhore have moved their music into.
Finally the end of the night rings around with Florida grown Obituary setting up the stage. I have to say it was weird to be surrounded by grey haired head bangers but it shows the history Obituary has in the metal world. With the Tardy brothers ready to go and the other members of the band revved up after a day of rest, the metal that came out was more than expected. Pulling tracks from their latest album Darkest Day and classics spanning their entire catalog. Having the longest hair, the heaviest riffs and a set list mixed with songs from old to new, Obituary shows they are still “The heaviest band in the world”.
