CD Review – Arch Enemy
The Root of All Evil
Century Media Records

With the exception of people living in caves, everybody knows who Arch Enemy are. Lead by the inimitable Angela Gossow the melodic death metal gods are hailing away year after year, talking straight to the the metal hearts all over the world. It won’t be a big surprise if ten years from now they will be the symbol of metal unity without borders or bounds, much like Iron Maiden.

As with any big name, Arch Enemy carries a couple of regal secrets, especially since the Queen wasn’t there from the beginning. Believe it or not,  even some of those who live a bit closer to civilization then the aforementioned cavemen don’t know that the original Arch Enemy was a slightly different beast. The first three albums were recorded with Johan Liiva on vocals.

Angela’s work raised some questions in the past and, knowing her, she probably was dying to cross all the “T’s” and dot all the “I’s”. So a decade later Arch Enemy are ready to present The Root of All Evil, symbolizing the fact that there is only one vocalist, one band, one legacy. A compilation per se, The Root of All Evil is actually an impressive and original piece work, featuring re-recorded songs from the first three albums (Black Earth, Stigmata and Burning Bridges).

With tracks we know and love all over the place the CD is going to blow you away with clear sound, impeccable precision and a time machine as a bonus. Angela is at her best, carving in plastic what she’s been singing live for years, doing so with ruthless enthusiasm. Most will be blown away, some will die on the spot, old farts will consider it blasphemy, but all of them will agree that The Root of All Evil is not of this world and belongs in the deepest fire-pits of your own soul. Only to be reborn from the ashes as a testament of everything you value in metal.
