CD Review: Hustle Simmons
Dave Ghetto and The S Ence are Hustle Simmons,
Break Bread Projects/Traffic Entertainment Group
Combining Dave Ghetto’s South Jersey swagger with The S Ence’s smooth and souful Philly productions, Hustle Simmons represent for the best in the current school of East Coast Hip Hop with one foot firmly planted in the Golden Era 90′s and the other in a very bright future. Having both established themselves independently in their respective arts, their debut release on Break Bread Projects drops on the current scene like a Dostoyevsky novel on a shelf of Harlequins.
With lyrical content focusing on the real life struggles of grown adults, songs like “They Already Know” with it’s dope Prodigy sample sound like timeless classics rooted in the best soul and Hip Hop styles. “Evacuate” featuring Al Mighty bangs with furious intensity and a screaming organ sample. “Celebrate” brings the upliftment with it’s narrative of hard times, hustling and hope. The lush beats of “War Tour” and “As The World Turns” bathe the boom bap drums in soothing strings and spaced out reverb while Dave Ghetto recites his litany of tragic downfalls and hard work redemption.
The first six tracks are so perfect you’ll be nodding your head to them and hearing them everywhere after just one listen. Mature yet gritty in content, musically diverse and sounding like sonic soul food, Hustle Simmons have created a near masterpiece with their debut album – The kind of music that makes any situation seem brighter, and that motivates and encourages folks at whatever level of the hustle they may be.
