ABORT at CMW: Live Review – Red 1, Politic Live and guests
Thursday, March 6, 2008
The Annex WreckRoom, Toronto
Politic Live are three dope MC’s from Edmonton who are steady on the rise. The perfect blend of radio friendly, Kanye/ R+B flavours, Southern Crunk, Hardcore and Reggae vibes makes for a diverse listening experience, with lyrics treading the balance between politicized knowledge of self and the steady hustler grind. They eventually managed to move the minimal crowd with a tight audience interplay, but their live act, while solid, could use some honing. Performers need to come out swinging even if there are only 10 statues watching, especially at CMW.
Red 1 came fresh off the plane from Antigua, and you know that he was ready to rock out regardless. Despite some bizarre technical problem that made the turntables gradually speed up the records, so that all of the beats were at 1 ½ speed, Red and the Killawatt crew demonstrated their easy mastery of the live environment. While Red stepped in to maintain the ones and twos, Joose of the Plazma crew, Heatwave, and Lamar Ashe dropped some of their own gems on a now well lubricated audience. With the audience singing the hooks on all of Red’s classic joints, it was clear that the man needs no introduction in the T-dot – he gets respect coast to coast.
VanCity got the world class Hip Hop and Toronto knows it. Time to unify.
