BROOKLYN GRAFFITI LEGEND MR. KAVES DESIGNS 2011 BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU LABEL AND WILL APPEAR IN METALLICA’S FIRST-EVER ART EXHIBIT

November 12th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

Bay Ridge native Mr. Kaves began his long relationship with graffiti by invading the tunnels of the NYC transit system at the insanely young age of 10.  To this day, he is a highly respected artist amongst his peers and also among the many cutting edge companies for which he has created priceless images – from Nike and Adidas, to the Beastie Boys and Everlast, to MTV and the WWE…  Each (and many others) has been blessed by his creativity and forward-facing talents.

Fast forward to Winter 2011 and you can add Georges Duboeuf and Metallica to the long list of those whom have invited Kaves into their universe of expression.  Mr. Duboeuf personally hand-picked this Brooklyn taste-maker to design the 2011 label for his prestigious Beaujolais Nouveau wine release.  “We wanted to expose people to the celebration of Nouveau and capture the wine’s essence and the energy and unique perspective of Kaves’ art seemed to be an ideal vehicle,” said Franck Duboeuf, Georges’ son and co-proprietor of Les Vins Georges Duboeuf.

Beaujolais Nouveau 2011 will be officially uncorked one minute past midnight on Thursday, November 17, at a party at Stage 37 in New York City, at which Kaves will be displaying a dozen new works.
In addition to the above, Mr. Kaves has also been selected to participate in an art tribute to heavy metal kingpins Metallica during their Obey Your Master exhibit beginning January 20th and running through March 23rd at Exhibit A Gallery in Los Angeles.  Other artists scheduled to be included are Shepard Fairey, groundbreaking skateboarders Tony Alva and Steve Caballero, Metallica’s Rob Trujillo, Slipknot founding member Shawn Crahan, Brian M. Viveros, Joe Petagno, Travis Louie and approximately 20 others.

For the exhibit, the artists have all chosen a specific Metallica song by and will execute their vision in their individual artistic mediums, based on their interpersonal relationship to Metallica’s lyrics and music.  Kaves explains “Metallica played a lot of their early East Coast shows at a club called L’amour in my backyard of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  Now they’re arguably the biggest rock band on the planet and their music and lyrics have touched millions of people.  I’ve chosen the song that I have, which I can’t reveal until you see the painting, because I can relate the immense loss the band experienced on their way to becoming the band we now know.  I’ve experienced catastrophic loss in my life as well and feel a kinship to those guys as a result.”

Beastie Boys’ LICENSED TO ILL TOUR Exhibition Premieres on October 8 at Hold Up Art (Los Angeles, CA )

September 27th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

HOLD UP ART PRESENTS:

THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF SUNNY BAK
IN A RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION ENTITLED “Boys & Dogs”

OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION
Saturday, October 8, 2011
Exhibit runs through November 1, 2011
at
Hold Up Art, 358 E. 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA

Hold Up Art presents Boys and Dogs, a collection of works by world renowned photographer Sunny Bak. Her photos of the Beastie Boys and the “Licensed to Ill” tour solidified Sunny’s place as a serious rock and celebrity photographer. Simultaneously, her love of animals, especially dogs, led to the creation of the best selling People Magazine parody, Pupple. These two diverse collections of images represent the work that have defined Sunny’s career.

“It’s been 25 years since I looked at the images I shot of the Beastie Boys in NYC with Garrett Simmons when we were working on a book called Pupple,” says Sunny Bak of this new exhibition. “This show is part retrospective and part looking toward the future as Garrett and I are working on a follow up to the original Pupple. It’s an homage to the beasty in all of us.”

Photographing celebrities since high school, Sunny has shot celebrities like Madonna, 10,000 Maniacs, Gregory Peck, Keanu Reeves, Seth Green, and Carol Alt.  She spent time on the road with the up-and-coming The Beastie Boys on their 1986 “Licensed to Ill” tour. Sunny shot the iconic images that were featured in the multi-platinum album’s artwork.

“Within the context of our culture, from Kanye, to Banksy to Obama, hip hop is an undeniable pillar of our culture,” says Hold Up Art curator Brian Lee. “Though many people overlook the 80s hip hop scene as being dated and over-played, too much of our contemporary notions of the ‘artist,’ and issues of ‘anti-authority’ that color the way we perceive the Shepard Fairey’s of the day, are informed directly by the attitude and movement of the genre. Sunny Bak’s photos follow the Beastie’s during their late 80s ‘Licensed to Ill’ tour, offering a very intimate perspective on such a ground-breaking time.  Whether it is our distance in time or the closeness Sunny shared with The Beastie Boys, Bak’s photos bring you closer to understanding who these three guys really were, aside from their music videos.  The photos reveal the personal side of them, and a universal story of youth, potential, and the American Dream.”

Sunny’s best-selling book, Pupple, co-created with Garrett Simmons, took a different look at celebrity photography. She photographed dogs, dressed as celebrities in a parody of People Magazine. With new celebrities to feature, Sunny and Garrett are currently working on the follow up to Pupple.

ABORT Recommends…KRAKEN’s “Fantasmas” Exhibit, Sept.17- October 20, 2011, Hold Up Art Gallery, Los Angeles, CA

September 23rd, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

“Fantasmas” runs through October 20, 2011, Hold Up Art, 358 E 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA

Hold Up Art is proud to present FANTASMAS, featuring artwork by Kraken, and live music by Jazztec, the latest in a series of projects by El Regimen Collective.

Sometimes exploring the darker side of life makes for the best art. The most frightening, shocking pieces of art are often the most passionate and technically daring. In creating images that could very well scare audiences, artists push their art to delve into psychological layers that peaceful and idyllic art leaves alone. In other words, the darker the art, the trippier the experience.

Kraken was no doubt aware of this when he created the works in his current exhibition, at Hold Up Art, entitled “Fantasmas,” a collection of everything from posters to four-color silkscreen prints. Somehow, in his renditions of thrillingly creepy figures, Kraken makes even the most nightmarish of images stunning. Taking inspiration from things such as movies and serial killer case studies, Kraken leads viewers into a world full of intriguingly attractive but horrifying figures.

About half of the exhibition focuses on the music posters that Kraken created, showcasing his graphic design talent. And while his talent is evident, it was the less-manufactured, more creatively-free figures that came from the depths of Kraken’s imagination that sent a thrilling fear and awe into viewers’ minds.

ABORT Recommends…Chet Zar and Craig LaRotonda At Last Rites Gallery, July 22nd – August 19th (NYC)

June 29th, 2011 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

Chet Zar: Faces of Death
Craig LaRotonda: Eternal Consequences

July 22nd – August 19th
Opening Reception: July 22nd , 7pm-11pm

Last Rites Gallery unveils it’s newly renovated space with opening receptions for two highly acclaimed artists, Chet Zar and Craig LaRotonda. This will be both artists’ second solo shows at the gallery.

CHET ZAR:
One of the world’s most recognizable dark artists, Chet Zar creates surreal depictions of otherworldly creatures. These portraits, although un-human, portray emotions that are easily recognizable & relatable, although often repressed. His work causes the viewer to look within, question one’s own mortality, and confront even the greatest of fears. Through his Grisaille painting technique, built upon thin layers of pigment, these images evolve. Veils of flesh upon his creatures, misted backgrounds, and creeping smoke add to the ethereal quality of his work, and have become his visual calling cards. His striking aesthetic has also found home in the cinematographic industry, with his work in films like Planet of the Apes, The Ring, Hell Boy, Men in Black and X-men, as well as highly acclaimed music videos for bands such as Tool.\

chetzar.com

CRAIG LAROTONDA:
Craig LaRotonda creates captivating and mysterious images, influenced by classic paintings from 15th and 16th centuries. Loaded with deep emotion and superb craftsmanship, his ability to make ugliness, deformities, and oddities become esthetically magnificent is what makes his art so unique. In his own words: “My paintings explore the unspeakable nature of consciousness. I think reality is much more than what we perceive with the five senses. I’m captivated by the spaces in between, like the passage between life and death, which seems to play continuously in my work”. Craig’s extensive body of work as illustrator has given this artist broad recognition, and his fine art can be found in the homes of collectors such as Johnny Depp, Kirsten Dunst, Dennis Quaid and Sigourney Weaver.

Things Come Undone : Shai Dahan
May 27th – June 20
Opening Reception: May 27th @ 6-10 pm
Södra vägen 30
412 54 Göteborg

Artspace + Us Gallery is proud to present the first international solo exhibition by urban contemporary artist Shai Dahan in Gothenburg Sweden. The show will include new works by Shai including large scale canvas paintings, illustrations as well as mixed media installations.

With his recent relocation to Sweden from New York, Shai chose to combine both cultures into the work for this solo show. The work includes hybrids of urban landscapes and familiar Scandinavian wildlife. With his signature birdguns, Shai expanded his animal-gun series and also chose to utilize other means from their environment to express the conflict between animals and the humans who invade their habitat.
Earlier this year, Shai took part of the Madrid Street Ad Takeover and also exhibited in Philadelphia. In 2010, Shai took part of the New York City Underbelly project with a selected group of artists painting in an abandoned New York City subway rail station. In 2009, he took part of the New York Street Ad Takeover, joining other artists to paint over illegal advertising throughout the New York City neighborhoods.
Shai currently lives in Borås with his wife and two dogs where he continues to paint.

“NYC BLACK BOOK MASTERS 2″
A collection of drawings by NYC graffiti Legends

March 16th, 2011 Filed under: ABORT Recommends..., Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

DirtyPilot Presents “NYC BLACK BOOK MASTERS 2″.
A collection of drawings by NYC graffiti Legends.

“Doing pieces and outlines in your own, and other writers black book, is a graff tradition that has held up and has been there from the beginning. With the NYC subway graffiti era gone (but not forgotten) blackbooks, now more than ever are a vital part of preserving the culture.

Drawing in black books are still a common denominator, whether you wrote on trains, walls or whatever, black book trading is still something special and personal – the exchange of art between its practitioners. The result is something precious and ever lasting that can be held and appreciated without the inevitability of being whitewashed or blasted from existence.
There aren’t many things that we continue to do as adults that we began doing as children. Black books are today’s link to yesterday’s dreams”.  – Louie “KR.ONE” Gasparro c.1977 – 2011

Dirtypilot.com is thrilled to offer collectors a window into the private world of black books and chance to own a piece of history by one of your favorite NYC writers.

Carrie Reichardt’s “Mad in England” March 11 – April 10, 2011, Ink_d Gallery (London, UK)

March 8th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

UK renegade potter and leading anarchist Carrie Reichardt will be bringing an eccentric twist to all things British at Ink_d Gallery.

As we build up towards the media mania of The Royal Wedding, Reichardt has decided she just can’t take it anymore – Mad in
England represents the Great British Empire as ‘Cruel Britannia’ through her unique anarchic vision. Subverting many of the British
Establishment icons; Union Jacks, Royalty and Quaint English Tea Sets and customs, Reichardt sets out to smash the system but in rather
genteel way……

As always, her work will be some of the most radical, politically charged (and really quite weird) ceramic and mosaic work you are ever
likely to see in the UK.

With prices for ceramic work starting at £20, everyone can afford a bit of anarchy in their home.

Last Rites Gallery Introduces Dark Pop 3.0 – Runs Now Until Feb. 12th, 2011 (NYC)

January 16th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

Last Rites Gallery Introduces Dark Pop 3.0

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 15th, 7-11 pm

Last Rites Gallery for the third year in a row has decided to find out what several of today’s brightest art stars are capable of when asked to create ONE piece that could be considered truly ‘dark art’. Many artists find themselves in the groove of creating a certain mood or emotion through their work and have, understandably, become quite comfortable following this path in their art-making. At Last Rites Gallery we want to break that mold and challenge the artists to create art that searches through new or buried feelings and emotions. The artist’s will let go of the light and allow the dark to thrive, as pop takes on a new form.

Participating artists include: Buff Monster, Esao Andrews, Scott Musgrove Mark Dean Veca , Daniel Hyun Lim, Glenn Barr, the PIZZ, Brian Despain, Mr. Christopher, Beau Stanton, Molly Crabapple, Michael Page, Mark Elliott, Mark Garro, Gaia, Noaur, Amy Crehore.

Dirty Pilot Presents: YES2 and KR.One – Now Showing

January 4th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

Now showing recent works by YES2
.

Graffiti artist YES2 was inspired by the images he saw painted on the cities subways and in its streets in the New York of the 1980’s. Giving in to his desire to join in on the beautiful destruction he began creating his own works in the streets using spray paint in 1986. Painting feverishly in NYC in the late 80’s, through the 90’s and into the new millennium, YES2 has become a well recognized and influential figure not only in his native NY but also in the global Graffiti community. Beginning travels abroad in 1996, the artist has painted in the streets of Holland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Canada, as well as various cities in the U.S.

Known for what some call a typical NY style of graffiti lettering, the artist has fun continually re-inventing his style while still maintaining the signature aggressive, dynamic, and energetic graffiti look, with a pinch of wit and a sprinkle of ‘I don’t give a shit’. Never finding the time to slow down, YES2 continues to live in NYC and create his work in varying forms and on various surfaces throughout the world.

Now showing recent works by KR.One

KR.ONE – “Mahavishnu Orchestrated” Pen,Ink, Marker on paper. 12 × 12.
Louie “KR.ONE” Gasparro is a self taught natural artist.
His inspirations and earliest influences range from Saturday morning cartoons, 1960’s and 70’s underground comics, rock album cover and poster art and of course the rolling art of NYC Subway Graffiti.

Specific influences include: Roger Dean, Rodney Matthews, Vaughn Bode, Bernie Wrightson, Alex Nino, Josh Kirby, Syd Mead, Frank Frazetta, Dan Merriam, and
NYC Graffiti luminaries such as DON 1 MAFIA,TRACY 168,ROTO 1,SON1,and KEL139.
Born in Manhattan, raised in Astoria Queens; Louie totally absorbed the early to mid 70’s graffiti metamorphosis and in 1977 took the name KROME later changing it to KR.ONE.

New York City’s MTA subway RR, M, L, J, A, B, 2 and 5 lines became the surface choice of this emerging artist’s creative expression.
Retiring from the subways in 1982, Louie put his late night subway excursions on pause to begin his musical career playing drums and guitars. He has created art, written music and drummed for such legendary NYC bands as: MURPHY’s LAW, LORDZ OF BROOKLYN, BLITZSPEER, SUPERVILLAIN and current hard rock / heavy metal project RESURRECTION SORROW, which are about to release their 2nd independent album in March 2011.

This current show is an example of KR.ONE and his collection of “Graffiti as Illustrative Art”.

“The enigmatic bending of what were once known as your A, B, C’s.

(Comicbookmovie.com) – In an interview with Swiss television, H.R. Giger’s wife (Carmen Giger) has revealed that her husband, the original Alien designer, is onboard for Ridley Scott’s 3D Alien prequel. You can see the video interview here.

H.R. Giger was born in Chur, Graubünden Canton, Switzerland and got his start with small ink drawings before progressing to oil paintings. His design for the Alien was inspired by his painting Necronom IV and earned him an Oscar in 1980. Ridley Scott’s candid description of the moment was when he saw Necronomicon and realized his search for the perfect Alien had ended.

H.R. Giger will be appearing at an exhibition from now until April 11 in Sarnen, Canton of Obwalden, Switzerland.
