Film Review: Tai Chi Hero – Directed by Stephen Fung

April 26th, 2013 Filed under: Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

Tai Chi Hero
Directed by Stephen Fung
Well Go

Shot back to back with its predecessor, Tai Chi Zero (2012) – Tai Chi HERO doesn’t skip a single beat. There is no ‘in between the two films’ story that is explained as part of the current plot, as the movie relies on the viewer to have a good understanding of events as they have already transpired. What sets it apart from other series though, is the fact that each of the two films plots stand on their own as a full feature, as someone who watched them in reverse order can attest.

Tai Chi Hero again follows the lives of the three main protagonists and lone antagonist through their ups and downs with a few small twists along the way. The film starts off right from the last scene of TCZ, A sleepy Lu Chan (Jayden Yuan) dressed in his wedding formals, lounging on the wreck of the Troy 1 outside of Chen Village while his bride to be, Yu Niang (Angelababy) is carted through the village square to the ancestral house.

Festivities are just beginning when a pair of mysterious, and strange outsiders interrupt the wedding. Apprehensions turn to joy when the stranger is found to be none other than the elder brother of Yu Niang, and son of Chen Grandmaster Chang Xing (Tony Leung Ka Fai). The prodigal son returning to Chen Village after an indeterminate amount of time (decades, it seems) is not, however, all fun and games, with a somewhat sinister plot ready to unfold, with an ancient prophesy threatening the very essence of Chan Village.

The film runs the complete gamut of human emotion, from Yu Niang’s initial disgust with her choice to marry the village idiot, Antagonist Fang Zi Jung’s (Eddie Peng) need for revenge at any cost, and Grandmaster Chen’s disappointment at his eldest sons storied past and reluctance to ever properly learn Chan Style Kung-Fu. Throughout, you’re drawn deep into every characters journey, whether you’re rooting for them or not.

Director Stephen Fung, with more than twenty years experience under his belt is shown to be quite adept at weaving together several popular kung-fu film sub genres into one cohesive unit, with the bumbling idiot a la Kung Fu Hustle Style, The flowing leaps and fluidity of Crouching Tiger. As a timeless classic, the franchise might need one more iteration to make any real waves in the annals of history, and the ending certainly leaves room for it. One can hope that the success of this film sees more of Fung’s future projects reaching mainstream western audiences,

While Tai Chi Hero is an easily recommendable see it in theatres film, you’d be best to watch its predecessor immediately before heading out to have a true appreciation for the story as a whole.

Tai Chi Hero is in theatres everywhere TODAY!

Bursting into 2013 with a co-production credit on A$AP Rocky’s forthcoming Long. Live. A$AP, French turntablist foursome Birdy Nam Nam keep it moving by announcing the Defiant Order EP, a mid-tempo masterpiece paired with re-workings by hip-hop and left-field influencers such as Ed Banger secret weapon Breakbot, syrupy Huntsville go-to heatmakers Block Beattaz, three-time consecutive DMC World Champion DJ Craze, and buzzing masked assailant UZ. The EP will be the group’s second project on Skrillex’s OWSLA.

BNN made their early mark by dominating the 2002 DMC World DJ Championship, and more recently by taking home a Victoire de la Musique (French equivalent of a Grammy) in 2010. The team, a super-unique spoke in the wheel of electronic music (they manhandle four Numarks live, editing in real-time with lightning-quick fader cuts), closed 2012 with their latest effort, the phenomenal Jaded Future EP which featured compatriots Para One and Teki Latex.

Tour dates will be announced shortly. This will be HOLY GRAIL’s first tour in support of their sophomore release, “Ride The Void,” which is scheduled for release in North America via Prosthetic Records on Jan. 22. Live Review: Benny Benasi with Pink is Punk and Congorock
Saturday, November 3rd, 2012
Celebrities

Saturday night at Celebrities is generally a crazy time for lovers of dance music. Triple that craziness and invite a huge DJ such as Benny Benassi behind the decks, and you’ve got last Saturday’s monster show. The dark dungeon of the nightclub that is Celebrities was already packed and bouncing for openers Pink is Punk and Congorock, the energy of the crowd already hitting the ceiling. Congorock traded off with Benny who raised a glass of champagne to the fiery crowd and began his set. The rest of the night was a success for his Vancouver stop of the Rough Road Tour, with a mesmerizing light show and a constant sea of hands raised on the dance floor.

Lamb of God Issue First Official Statement On Randy Blythe’s Detainment

July 6th, 2012 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized by MetalEditor

(Lamb-of-god.com) – “First of all, thanks to everyone who has reached out in support of Randy and each of us in this terrible situation. It’s noted and very much appreciated.

We have been keeping our heads down and not speaking out due to the fluid nature of the situation and the constantly changing information that even we receive daily. Within an hour things can do endless 180’s. It’s maddening to try and make heads or tails.

We’re taking the time to speak to you as it has been a significant period of time since this situation began and while nothing is immediately clear to any of us, we are not trying to keep anyone in the dark.

We have reached out and are making use of the resources we have acquired to help our brother who is still detained in Czech jail.

In the two years since, we were never notified of anything related to this incident.

Randy is our brother and we assure you, we are all staying very positive for him, working endlessly behind the scenes to provide any and all assistance possible.

The best we can do is to stay positive and continue to support our friend that we know is innocent.

We know that justice will prevail and we will continue to do our part to support our friend. ”

Album Review: Exumer – Fire and Damnation

April 8th, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

Album Review: Exumer
Fire and Damnation
Metal Blade Records

Fire and Damnation, the quadranscentennial comeback from German thrashers Exumer, is here at long last. It’s not as dark as Venom, not as fast as Slayer, and probably won’t make you want to stick your head in an oven. But, and this is a big one – while being ever so slightly more melodic than early Exumer work, make no mistake, Fire and Damnation as a whole seems to be far more brutal. Although to be fair, this may just be due to a much cleaner production, which of course comes down to a matter of taste.

As a bear arising from a particularly long winter’s hibernation Fire and Damnation likewise has the sound of what you might call a band ‘returning to spring training.’ Though not as frantic as Possessed by Fire, this newest release awakens within a desire for the fiery carnage that truly great metal proclaims.

Kicking off festivities is the title track, “Fire and Damnation,” preparing listeners for the bloodshed to come. Continuing the sonic fury shortly thereafter is “The Weakest Limb,” also a blissfully pissed-off track. There are very few weak points on this album: “Vermin of the Sky” and “Crushing Point,” for example, seem somewhat lackluster. Ending the album on a most definitely solid point, “Tribal Furies” provides one last hearty dose of face shredding and visceral lacerations.

As of late, a trend seems to be taking root among bands that have long lost their original glory – think Angel Witch, and so on. Thankfully, unlike these other groups, Exumer pulls off a return to power with flying colors.

Rapper CASUAL Drops New Video for “Fiend For Hip-Hop”

September 23rd, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

Fresh off a string of Rock The Bells performances and a free show at Highline Ballroom in New York City, Hieroglyphic crew member Casual is back with the latest video from his recently released album, Hierophant. The album, which includes features from features Tajai of Souls of Mischief, fellow Hiero member Pep Love, and Thomas Pridgen, former drummer of The Mars Volta, was originally released for free through Casual’s Bandcamp earlier this year and will now be packaged and re-released at retail on October 18th.

Now, as Casual continues to push forward towards release, he’s dropping a new video for fans, for the song “Fiend For Hip-Hop.” A self-directed clip – Casual has stayed busy of late directing videos for a handful of artists in the Bay – “Fiend For Hip-Hop,” as the title suggests, finds Smash Rockwell at his sharpest lyrically, spitting his verses while taking photos with a variety of video vixens.

Cash Kings 2011: Hip-Hop’s Top Earners

August 13th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

(Forbes/Photo – AP) – This week Jay-Z and Kanye West unveiled their long-awaited collaboration, Watch the Throne. The album’s timing and title couldn’t have been more appropriate—the Empire State of Mind rapper is hip-hop’s top earner with $37 million in the past 12 months, claiming his fourth Cash Kings crown in five years; his partner-in-rhyme ranked third.

Fueled by the tail end of his Blueprint 3 Tour and a vast portfolio of business interests, Jay-Z barely edged second-ranked Diddy—who raked in $35 million, roughly half of that total coming from a lucrative partnership with Diageo’s Ciroc vodka—but handily topped West, who earned $16 million. The duo is steaming ahead with plans for co-headlining tour starting this fall.
“Jay-Z and Kanye are hip-hop ambassadors,” says Steve Stoute, chief of branding firm Translation and author of The Tanning of America. “They bring the art form around the world, and they’ve taken production and everything to the next level. Now they’ve got a chance to grow with their global audience.”

R.I.P. – Jani Lane Dead: Warrant Singer Dies At 47

August 12th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, R.I.P., Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

(Huffington Post/Photo – Sleazeroxx.com) – Jani Lane, the former lead singer of the metal rock band Warrant, has died in Los Angeles. He was 47.

Officer Sara Faden says Lane’s body was found Thursday in a Woodland Hills hotel. She had no immediate information on the cause or circumstances of his death. With his long blond hair and tight leather outfits, Lane embodied the excess of 1980s “hair metal” rock bands. He joined Warrant in 1984 and wrote such hits as “Heaven,” “Down Boys” and “Cherry Pie.”

He had an on-and-off relationship with the band, leaving it in 1992 before returning and quitting again several times.

R.I.P – Macho Man Randy Savage dies in Car Crash at 58

May 20th, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

(TMZ.com) – TMZ spoke with Randy’s brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM, and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn. Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase “Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh.” Savage was so popular, he became the spokesperson for Slim Jim in the mid ’90s … and became virtually synonymous with the brand.

UPDATE:
Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ … Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median … through oncoming traffic … and “collided head-on with a tree.” Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries. Savage’s wife was also a passenger in the vehicle during the collision — but survived with “minor injuries.” She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

Carrie Reichardt’s “Mad in England” March 11 – April 10, 2011, Ink_d Gallery (London, UK)

March 8th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

UK renegade potter and leading anarchist Carrie Reichardt will be bringing an eccentric twist to all things British at Ink_d Gallery.

As we build up towards the media mania of The Royal Wedding, Reichardt has decided she just can’t take it anymore – Mad in
England represents the Great British Empire as ‘Cruel Britannia’ through her unique anarchic vision. Subverting many of the British
Establishment icons; Union Jacks, Royalty and Quaint English Tea Sets and customs, Reichardt sets out to smash the system but in rather
genteel way……

As always, her work will be some of the most radical, politically charged (and really quite weird) ceramic and mosaic work you are ever
likely to see in the UK.

With prices for ceramic work starting at £20, everyone can afford a bit of anarchy in their home.
