Album Review: Exumer – Fire and Damnation

April 8th, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

Album Review: Exumer
Fire and Damnation
Metal Blade Records

Fire and Damnation, the quadranscentennial comeback from German thrashers Exumer, is here at long last. It’s not as dark as Venom, not as fast as Slayer, and probably won’t make you want to stick your head in an oven. But, and this is a big one – while being ever so slightly more melodic than early Exumer work, make no mistake, Fire and Damnation as a whole seems to be far more brutal. Although to be fair, this may just be due to a much cleaner production, which of course comes down to a matter of taste.

As a bear arising from a particularly long winter’s hibernation Fire and Damnation likewise has the sound of what you might call a band ‘returning to spring training.’ Though not as frantic as Possessed by Fire, this newest release awakens within a desire for the fiery carnage that truly great metal proclaims.

Kicking off festivities is the title track, “Fire and Damnation,” preparing listeners for the bloodshed to come. Continuing the sonic fury shortly thereafter is “The Weakest Limb,” also a blissfully pissed-off track. There are very few weak points on this album: “Vermin of the Sky” and “Crushing Point,” for example, seem somewhat lackluster. Ending the album on a most definitely solid point, “Tribal Furies” provides one last hearty dose of face shredding and visceral lacerations.

As of late, a trend seems to be taking root among bands that have long lost their original glory – think Angel Witch, and so on. Thankfully, unlike these other groups, Exumer pulls off a return to power with flying colors.

Metalblade – Exumer

Rapper CASUAL Drops New Video for “Fiend For Hip-Hop”

September 23rd, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

Fresh off a string of Rock The Bells performances and a free show at Highline Ballroom in New York City, Hieroglyphic crew member Casual is back with the latest video from his recently released album, Hierophant. The album, which includes features from features Tajai of Souls of Mischief, fellow Hiero member Pep Love, and Thomas Pridgen, former drummer of The Mars Volta, was originally released for free through Casual’s Bandcamp earlier this year and will now be packaged and re-released at retail on October 18th.

Now, as Casual continues to push forward towards release, he’s dropping a new video for fans, for the song “Fiend For Hip-Hop.” A self-directed clip – Casual has stayed busy of late directing videos for a handful of artists in the Bay – “Fiend For Hip-Hop,” as the title suggests, finds Smash Rockwell at his sharpest lyrically, spitting his verses while taking photos with a variety of video vixens.

Cash Kings 2011: Hip-Hop’s Top Earners

August 13th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

(Forbes/Photo – AP) – This week Jay-Z and Kanye West unveiled their long-awaited collaboration, Watch the Throne. The album’s timing and title couldn’t have been more appropriate—the Empire State of Mind rapper is hip-hop’s top earner with $37 million in the past 12 months, claiming his fourth Cash Kings crown in five years; his partner-in-rhyme ranked third.

Fueled by the tail end of his Blueprint 3 Tour and a vast portfolio of business interests, Jay-Z barely edged second-ranked Diddy—who raked in $35 million, roughly half of that total coming from a lucrative partnership with Diageo’s Ciroc vodka—but handily topped West, who earned $16 million. The duo is steaming ahead with plans for co-headlining tour starting this fall.
“Jay-Z and Kanye are hip-hop ambassadors,” says Steve Stoute, chief of branding firm Translation and author of The Tanning of America. “They bring the art form around the world, and they’ve taken production and everything to the next level. Now they’ve got a chance to grow with their global audience.”

R.I.P. – Jani Lane Dead: Warrant Singer Dies At 47

August 12th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, R.I.P., Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

(Huffington Post/Photo – Sleazeroxx.com) – Jani Lane, the former lead singer of the metal rock band Warrant, has died in Los Angeles. He was 47.

Officer Sara Faden says Lane’s body was found Thursday in a Woodland Hills hotel. She had no immediate information on the cause or circumstances of his death. With his long blond hair and tight leather outfits, Lane embodied the excess of 1980s “hair metal” rock bands. He joined Warrant in 1984 and wrote such hits as “Heaven,” “Down Boys” and “Cherry Pie.”

He had an on-and-off relationship with the band, leaving it in 1992 before returning and quitting again several times.

R.I.P – Macho Man Randy Savage dies in Car Crash at 58

May 20th, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

(TMZ.com) – TMZ spoke with Randy’s brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM, and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn. Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase “Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh.” Savage was so popular, he became the spokesperson for Slim Jim in the mid ’90s … and became virtually synonymous with the brand.

UPDATE:
Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ … Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median … through oncoming traffic … and “collided head-on with a tree.” Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries. Savage’s wife was also a passenger in the vehicle during the collision — but survived with “minor injuries.” She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

Carrie Reichardt’s “Mad in England” March 11 – April 10, 2011, Ink_d Gallery (London, UK)

March 8th, 2011 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

UK renegade potter and leading anarchist Carrie Reichardt will be bringing an eccentric twist to all things British at Ink_d Gallery.

As we build up towards the media mania of The Royal Wedding, Reichardt has decided she just can’t take it anymore – Mad in
England represents the Great British Empire as ‘Cruel Britannia’ through her unique anarchic vision. Subverting many of the British
Establishment icons; Union Jacks, Royalty and Quaint English Tea Sets and customs, Reichardt sets out to smash the system but in rather
genteel way……

As always, her work will be some of the most radical, politically charged (and really quite weird) ceramic and mosaic work you are ever
likely to see in the UK.

With prices for ceramic work starting at £20, everyone can afford a bit of anarchy in their home.

Record Store Day Prepares For Black Friday

November 24th, 2010 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

Word is out that your local indie record store may just be the place to be this Post-Thanksgiving-Shopping-Melee-Day, also known as Black Friday. And that’s because indie stores across the country will be the place to get special releases created just for you, for giving and getting this holiday season, and they’re scheduled for release on Black Friday.

Now, this is not Record Store Day, Jr. or RSD 11 or Son of the Return of Record Store Day. This is just a group of special releases that you can only find at record stores. Some of them are uber-limited, some of them are available at record stores before they’re available anywhere else. But they’re all special, and they kind of fly in the face of what Black Friday has become, which is “I have to shop, let’s see how fast and cheap I can get it over with”.  The magic of these pieces is that every one of them is something someone will really LOVE to get, and you’ll really ENJOY giving.  And you’ll have the extra nice feeling of supporting a local independently owned business during the holidays. So check out the list of titles, and keep in mind that not all stores on this page will carry everything, so start a conversation with your local store. Or print this out as a Wish List and hide it where your gift-giving loved ones are sure to find it.

Give the Gift of Music this year, by shopping at your favorite local record store.

Beastie Boys Scrap Hot Sauce Committee Part 1; Move Forward With New Album

October 20th, 2010 Filed under: Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

(AllHipHop) – The Beastie Boys are moving forward with plans to release new music next year, after scrapping their highly anticipated album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1. The Hip-Hop group scrapped the album last year when Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with cancer of the preaortic gland and lymph nod, last year. Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 was supposed to be released on Y, but was put on hold sold MCA could undergo treatment.

“It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor’s orders,” MCA told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. “We may or may not [release the album] depending on how my health is come September. We want to but we have to play it by ear…we finished the record over a year ago, so we want to take a look at it and re-evaluate and make sure it is what we want to put out there and that we are still happy with it…”

Just recently, the group revealed that they were shelving the album indefinitely, but they will still release Hot Sauce Committee Part 2, in the spring of 2011.

CD Review: Angelspit – Larva Pupa Tank Coffin

October 11th, 2010 Filed under: Reviews - Music, Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

CD Review – Angelspit
Larva Pupa Tank Coffin
Metropolis

Are there any other genres currently producing music that are as plagued by clichés as electronic-industrial? One could argue metal or hip-hop, but the formula for a goth-club-hit is so easy that it’s spawned a veritable ocean of soundalike “projects”. The subject of this missive, Australia’s own Angelspit, is a textbook example of this. Spending more time studying their influences than developing their own sound, they have presented us -the listening audience- with a collection of tracks they call ‘Larva Pupa Tank Coffin’- a title as purposefully disjointed and pointless as the album itself.

The official bio of Angelspit describes their sounds as “a unique blend of industrial, rock, noise, metal and a touch of pop”.  At least three of those terms are painfully incorrect. Angelspit are as cookie-cutter as EBM can be these days. Here’s the recipe for success in the land of rivetheads: four-on-the-floor kickdrum offset with a distorted snare, arpeggiated bass-synth line, requisite sci-fi movie samples, and pretentious lyrical content. This describes Angelspit perfectly, but you’ll note there’s no metal, rock, or noise included in that formula. Not in the traditional sense of those genres, at any rate. Don’t make claims you can’t back, children.

The greatest failure of Angelspit (both in general and in particular on this album) lies in their approach to vocals. Lead vocalist “DestroyX” (Amelia Tan) comes across like a petulant teenager throwing churlish rebellion buzzwords at her oh-so-square parents. The other half of the project, “ZooG” (Karl Learmont) makes the same mistake so many others in electro-industrial have made- he whispers his pop-culture-derived catchphrases into a contact mic and hopes that soft-synth processing effects will hide the complete and utter lack of passion or conviction. It doesn’t.

When you take unoriginal source material and farm it out to other producers and projects, you end up with what is frequently referred to as ‘polishing a turd’. This is more than apparent on ‘Larva Pupa Tank Coffin’. Not one of the remixes on this release shows inspiration, opting instead to appeal to the lowest common denominator. What does that mean, exactly? “Make it as stompy as possible in the hopes it fills the dancefloor.” Beware, foolish mortal- this path leads to mediocrity. Four times over.

It would be easy to presume that this was a release completely devoid of positive points. That isn’t entirely the case. The production is very solid, with a rich warm low end and very crisp percussive notes. From a purely auditory point of view, ‘Larva Pupa Tank Coffin’ is caramel for the ears. It’s only that nagging lack of inspired songwriting that’s destroying any chances this wax has of becoming a collection of classic tracks. It’s also worth mentioning that the instrumental numbers are serviceable, as evidenced by the glitchy allure of ‘Not Born, Hatched’ and the vaguely sinister back-alley tone of ‘Hell Was Made Flesh’.

One cannot help but feel that Angelspit are little more than a slowed-down, less-original version of Atari Teenage Riot crossed with… Say… Err… Pick a “name” EBM band… Covenant? Velvet Acid Christ? Does it really matter? No, not particularly. This project, and in specific this collection of songs, will not make any lasting difference in the genre. It has little appeal, even less longevity, and only truly serves as sort of metronomic background noise.

With hits like “I’m A Playa,” “Caribou Lou” (which boasts 7.2 million MySpace plays), “Riotmaker,” “Like Yeah” and “Everybody Move,” it’s no wonder he counts a total of over 4.5 million YouTube video plays and an average of 40,000 MySpace visitors each day.

Add another T.K.O. to TECH N9NE’s scorecard. Since its fall release “K.O.D.”, has been named #1 Indie Album, #2 Rap Album, #14 in Top 200, #16 iTunes Album Overall in the Billboard Charts. Complementing TECH N9NE’s audio attack is an equally impressive visual assault: After an Oct. 27 All Day Premiere, Tech’s “Leave Me Alone” video is currently #1 on MTV University and was recently added to rotation on MTV JAMS.

With memorable features from Academy Award winners Three 6 Mafia, Strange affiliates Krizz Kaliko, Brotha Lynch Hung and Kutt Calhoun, K.O.D. allows TECH N9NE to paint the most vivid pictures he’s ever attempted. Powered by tracks like “Leave Me Alone” and “Show Me A God,” K.O.D. is a cathartic masterpiece offering his most personal songs yet.

Media outlets are also weighing in on the album and the reviews are outstanding. HipHopDX.com raves, “[K.O.D.] is dark and at times eerie but it’s honest and [TECH N9NE’s] lyrical abilities are still top notch,” and commends the rapper: “TECH N9NE is as technical as any emcee alive is. He can do anything he wants with his flow, voice and lyrics.” The site hails “Show Me a God” as “absolutely brilliant”, and about “Blackened the Sun,” it boasts, “From the beat to the chorus, and the lyrics, TECH shines.”

CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN TO RELEASE TRANSYLVANIA TOMORROW TOUR WITH ALICE IN CHAINS TO START TOMORROW IN VANCOUVER PERFORMANCE CONFIRMED AT THIS YEAR’S SXSW

February 1st, 2010 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry, Uncategorized by Editor in Chief

Creature With The Atom Brain is thrilled to announce that TRANSYLVANIA will be released tomorrow, February 2nd via The End Records. Marking the band’s North American debut, Creature With The Atom Brain landed an impressive thirteen-date slot opening for Alice In Chains, which also kicks off tomorrow at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver.

Mixed by Chris Goss (Queens Of The Stone Age, Masters Of Reality) and including appearances by Mark Lanegan, TRANSYLVANIA showcases the band’s blend of psychedelia, garage rock, and hypnotizing grooves, while also combining African rhythms, making this album a striking standout from most contemporary independent music. Q Magazine gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and went on to say “long endorsed by Josh Homme, these Belgians’ stoner/psych credentials are impeccable even before Mark Lanegan and Chris Goss signed up for this sublimely lysergic release.”

Creature With The Atom Brain will also make their debut at this year’s SXSW, playing at The End Record’s showcase on Thursday, March 18th at The Ale House. More details to follow.
