According to a post on THE DOORS official facebook page, DOORS keyboardist, Ray Manzarek has passed away. The original post reads as follows:

Ray Manzarek, Founding Member of The Doors, Passes Away at 74

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away today at 12:31PM PT at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.

Manzarek is best known for his work with The Doors who formed in 1965 when Manzarek had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison. The Doors went on to become one of the most controversial rock acts of the 1960s, selling more than 100-million albums worldwide, and receiving 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and five multi-Platinum albums in the U.S. alone. “L.A.Woman,” “Break On Through to the Other Side,” “The End,” “Hello, I Love You,” and “Light My Fire” were just some of the band’s iconic and ground-breaking songs. After Morrison’s death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a best-selling author, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors’ guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,” said Krieger. “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.”

Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manczarek, son Pablo Manzarek, Pablo’s wife Sharmin and their three children Noah, Apollo and Camille. Funeral arrangements are pending. The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please make a memoriam donation in Ray Manzarek’s name at www.standup2cancer.org

Hell No Longer Waits

Today is a sad day in the metal world as another musician has fallen into the grasp of Valhalla. At approximately 11:00 AM this morning, legendary Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away near his Southern California home due to liver failure. He was only 49.

Starting in early 2011 Hanneman was forced to sit out on two years of touring after contracting necrotizing fasciitis caused by a spider bite sustained while lounging in a hot tub. While complications caused from the spider bite are not believed to be the cause of death, the guitarist was forced to endure numerous surgeries, skin graphs, countless antibiotics and intense rehab as a result.

Born and raised in California, Jeff Hanneman grew up in military family. This is where a good majority of his influence for Slayer was born, including the lyrics to Angel of Death. His love of punk music, especially the Dead Kennedys, attributed to his fast and aggressive writing style. As an original member of Slayer and the mastermind behind many of their riffs, solos and lyrics, Hanneman’s influence on heavy metal music is immeasurable.

It’s a sad day indeed, so bring out your Show No Mercy album, have a beer and pay homage to a fallen metal god; the angel of death has taken the great Jeff Hanneman.

Rest in Peace Jeffrey John Hanneman January 31st 1964 – May 2nd 2013

R.I.P – Chris Kelly of 90s groups Kris Kross dies aged 34

May 2nd, 2013 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

(CBC.ca) – Chris Kelly, half of the 1990s kid rap duo Kris Kross who made one of the decade’s most memorable songs with the frenetic Jump, has died, according to authorities. He was 34.

Investigator Betty Honey of the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office said the 34-year-old Kelly was pronounced dead around 5 p.m. Wednesday at the south campus of the Atlanta Medical Center.

Honey said authorities are unsure of Kelly’s cause of death and that an autopsy has yet to be performed.

Kelly, known as “Mac Daddy,” and Chris Smith, known as “Daddy Mac,” were introduced to the music world in 1992 by music producer and rapper Jermaine Dupri after he discovered the pair in an Atlanta mall. The duo wore their clothes backwards as a gimmick, but they won over fans with their raps.

(National Post) – LONDON — English graphic designer Storm Thorgerson, whose eye-popping album art for Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin encapsulated the spirit of 1970s psychedelia, died Thursday. He was 69.

In a statement, Thorgerson’s family said that his death “was peaceful and he was surrounded by family and friends.” The statement gave few further details but said that the artist, who suffered a stroke in 2003, had been ill for some time.

Even those who not familiar with Thorgerson’s name will have seen his work gracing vinyl collections and CD racks. He was best known for his surreal Pink Floyd covers, which guitarist David Gilmour said had long been “an inseparable part of our work.”

(CBC News) – Margaret Thatcher, one of the most important British politicians of the 20th century, died Monday morning after suffering a stroke. She was 87.

Thatcher was the first woman to become U.K. prime minister and Britain’s only prime minister of the 20th century to win three consecutive terms.

After leading the Conservatives to victory in the 1979 election, Thatcher shook Britain to its economic roots in a relentless battle to restructure the country.

Richard Longworth of the Chicago Tribune described Thatcher in 1989 as “perhaps the most admired, hated, fascinating, boring, radical and conservative leader in the Western world.”

The next year she would be forced from office by her own party.
The mayor’s daughter

Born Margaret Hilda Roberts in Grantham, England in 1925 she was the second daughter of Alfred and Beatrice Roberts. Her father eventually owned two grocery stores (the family lived above one of them) and would become mayor of Grantham.

He had a huge influence on Margaret, as she observed when she became prime minister.

R.I.P – Hate Bassist Slawek ‘Mortifer’ Archangielskij passes away in sleep while on tour

April 7th, 2013 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

(Loudwire) – Polish death metal act Hate are in mourning after the death of their bassist Slawek ‘Mortifer’ Archangielskij. The musician passed away near the German town of Munchberg on the night of April 5 while the band was en route to their next gig on their European tour.

Hate, who had been on the road in support of their latest album, ‘Solarflesh,’ posted about the loss of their comrade and stated that they’ll immediately stop their current tour as a result of his death. Archangielskij was also the bass player for Naumachia and the guitarist for Saltus. Both of those bands reposted Hate’s original Facebook message on his passing on their sites as well.

The posting on the bassist’s death reads as follows:

SŁAWEK „MORTIFER” ARCHANGIELSKIJ IS DEAD

At night 5th/6th April near a German town of Munchberg, our friend, best comrade and longtime bass player unexpectedly passed away. After the show in Stuttgart last night he went to sleep and never woke up. We found him lifeless early in the morning and immediately called an ambulance. He was reanimated, but to no avail. Results of Sławek’s autopsy should be known soon. In this situation, we decided to cancel the remaining shows and return home. We gave detailed testimonies to the German police. We are shocked and shattered by his sudden, unexpected death. We mourn together with Slawek’s family and friends.

Adam, Konrad, Stanislaw, Daniel /HATE

The death metal act has been around since 1990, but has gone through a number of bassists since their start. Archangielskij had been a touring member since 2007 and an official band member since 2009.

R.I.P – Famed Film Critic Roger Ebert passes away, aged 70

April 4th, 2013 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

(New York Times) – Roger Ebert, the popular film critic and television co-host who along with his fellow reviewer and sometime sparring partner Gene Siskel could lift or sink the fortunes of a movie with their trademark thumbs up or thumbs down, died on Thursday.in Chicago. He was 70. His death was announced by The Chicago Sun-Times, where he had worked for many years.

Mr. Ebert’s struggle with cancer, starting in 2002, gave him an altogether different public image — as someone who refused to surrender to illness. Though he had operations for cancer of the thyroid, salivary glands and chin, lost his ability to eat, drink and speak (he was fed through a tube and a prosthesis partly obscured the loss of much of his chin) and became a gaunter version of his once-portly self, he continued to write reviews and commentary and published a cookbook he had started, on meals that could be made with a rice cooker.

“When I am writing, my problems become invisible, and I am the same person I always was,” he told Esquire magazine in 2010. “All is well. I am as I should be.”

In recent years, Mr. Ebert had written extensively about his illness on Twitter.

It would not be a stretch to say that Mr. Ebert was the best-known film reviewer of his generation, and one of the most trusted. He liked to say his approach — dryly witty, occasionally sarcastic, sometimes quirky in his opinions — reflected the working newspaper reporter he had been, not a formal student of film. His tastes ran from the classics to boldly independent cinema to cartoons, and his putdowns could be withering.

“I will one day be thin, but Vincent Gallo will always be the director of ‘The Brown Bunny,’ ” he wrote.

In 1975 he became the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize, for his Sun-Times reviews. His columns were syndicated to more than 200 newspapers in the United States and abroad, and he wrote more than 15 books, many by skillfully recycling his columns. In 2005 he became the first critic to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

R.I.P. – Creator of Motown Hits, Deke Richards dies at 68 after Battle With Cancer

March 27th, 2013 Filed under: R.I.P. by MetalEditor

(The New York Times) – Deke Richards, the leader of the Motown songwriting and producing team responsible for some of the Jackson 5’s biggest hits, died on Sunday in Bellingham, Wash. He was 68.

The cause was esophageal cancer, his family said.

In 1969, Mr. Richards teamed in Detroit with Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of Motown, and the songwriters Freddie Perren and Alphonzo Mizell, to work with the Jackson 5, a virtually unknown brother act from Indiana that had recently signed with the label. Collectively billed as the Corporation, the four struck gold immediately.

The Jackson 5’s first three singles, “I Want You Back,” “ABC” and “The Love You Save” — all written and produced by the Corporation, and all featuring the vocals of a very young Michael Jackson — reached No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart. The Corporation went on to write and produce other hits for the Jackson 5, including “Mama’s Pearl” and “Maybe Tomorrow.”

Mr. Richards later worked, both with the Corporation and on his own, with Diana Ross, Martha and the Vandellas, the Four Seasons and others.

R.I.P. – Former Iron Maiden Drummer Clive Burr passes away aged 56

March 13th, 2013 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

We are deeply saddened to report that Clive Burr passed away last night. He had suffered poor health for many years after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and died peacefully in his sleep at home.

Steve Harris said “This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.”

Bruce Dickinson adds “I first met Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family”

As Maiden fans all know, Clive joined Maiden in 1979 and performed on the first three albums Iron Maiden (1980), Killers (1981) and The Number Of The Beast (1982). Prior to that he was a member of Samson, the band Bruce fronted before he too joined Maiden.

The musician had been performing with thrash metal veterans Rigor Mortis at the Rail Club when he suddenly fell to the ground from a seizure. Rigor Mortis singer Bruce Corbitt, who scheduled the event in Fort Worth to celebrate his 50th birthday, stated on Facebook, “My brother is gone! The only reason I am who I am is because of this man. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t even be in a band. RIP Mike — the greatest guitar player I ever knew. I’m proud to say that I was always Mike Scaccia’s biggest fan, and always will be.”

Scaccia began his career with Rigor Mortis, a band he helped form in 1983. By 1988, the thrash/speed metal group had signed a major label deal and released their self-titled debut via Capitol Records

R.I.P: Beatles collaborator and sitar master Pandit Ravi Shankar passes away aged 92

December 11th, 2012 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

(WSJ) – Ravi Shankar, the Indian sitar master who built a global following, has died according to the Associated Press.

Shankar influenced the music of the Beatles and was also the father of jazz-pop star Norah Jones. Another of his daughters (by another mother), Anoushka Shankar, has also built a following as a sitar player.

Shankar passed away in San Diego, where he had traveled in order to undergo surgery.

Born in 1920 in Varanasi to a well-off Brahmin family, Shankar left a possible career as a dancer behind to study sitar. He traveled to Paris in the 1930s and broke through as a performer in the West in the 1960s, winning the ear and the respect of Beatles star George Harrison (who became his student).

In the book “George Harrison: Living in the Material World” by Olivia Harrison and Mark Holborn, George Harrison says this about Shankar: “I could meet anybody. I could go in all the film stars’ houses and meet Elvis and everybody, and we met a lot of really good people, but I never met one person who really impressed me. The first person who ever impressed me in my life was Ravi Shankar, and he was the only person who didn’t try to impress me.”

(CTVNews) – As Hollywood mourns the death of Phyllis Diller, the legendary comedienne is receiving an outpouring of respect today for her groundbreaking contributions to the art of stand-up comedy.

With her wild hair, outrageous outfits, biting one-liners and signature cackle, Diller left her stamp on Hollywood and paved the way for generations of female comics to follow in her footsteps.

“The legacy that this woman leaves is fantastic,” Sandra Shamas told CTV’s Canada AM on Tuesday

“She started off at a time when women weren’t accepted at all on stage…She was raising a family…No woman did what she did. We all stand on her shoulders,” the Canadian comedic actress and writer said via telephone from Georgetown, Ont.

Diller died at her L.A. home on Monday, surrounded by family members. She was 95.

Diller had recently fallen, hurting her wrist and hip. Since then, the star’s health had been on the decline.

R.I.P: Famed Top Gun Director Tony Scott, commits suicide after inoperable brain cancer diagnosis

August 20th, 2012 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

(Toronto Star) – Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as Top Gun, Days of Thunder and Beverly Hills Cop II, died Sunday after jumping from a towering suspension bridge spanning Los Angeles harbour and leaving behind several notes to loved ones, authorities said.

The 68-year-old Scott’s death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner’s Lt. Joe Bale said.

“I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time,” Scott’s spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, coroner’s Chief of Operations Craig Harvey said. He said investigators located several notes to loved ones that Scott left in his car and at another location, but that they were not described in initial reports as suicide notes.

He said Scott parked his car at the crest of the bridge, which is about 55 metres above water, before leaping to his death.

R.I.P: Celebrated Author, Gore Vidal passes away at his Hollywood Hills home, Aged 86

July 31st, 2012 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

(Photo – Gore Vidal 1948)

(NY TIMES) – Gore Vidal, the elegant, acerbic all-around man of letters who presided with a certain relish over what he declared to be the end of American civilization, died on Tuesday at his home in the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles, where he moved in 2003, after years of living in Ravello, Italy. He was 86.

The cause was complications of pneumonia, his nephew Burr Steers said by telephone.

Mr. Vidal was, at the end of his life, an Augustan figure who believed himself to be the last of a breed, and he was probably right. Few American writers have been more versatile or gotten more mileage from their talent. He published some 25 novels, two memoirs and several volumes of stylish essays. He also wrote plays, television dramas and screenplays. For a while he was even a contract writer at MGM. And he could always be counted on for a spur-of-the-moment aphorism, putdown or sharply worded critique of American foreign policy.

Perhaps more than any other American writer except Norman Mailer or Truman Capote, Mr. Vidal took great pleasure in being a public figure. He twice ran for office — in 1960, when he was the Democratic Congressional candidate for the 29th District in upstate New York, and in 1982, when he campaigned in California for a seat in the Senate — and though he lost both times, he often conducted himself as a sort of unelected shadow president. He once said, “There is not one human problem that could not be solved if people would simply do as I advise.”

R.I.P: Legendary Actor Andy Griffith passes away at North Carolina home, Aged 86

July 3rd, 2012 Filed under: R.I.P. by Editor in Chief

(Photo – CBS Photo Division, 1960)

(Vancouver Sun) – Actor Andy Griffith, whose portrayal of a small-town sheriff made “The Andy Griffith Show” one of television’s most enduring shows, died on Tuesday at his North Carolina home at age 86.

“At approximately 7 a.m., July 3, 2012, Andy Griffith passed away at his home on Roanoke Island, Dare County, North Carolina. The family will release further information shortly,” county Sheriff J.D. Doughtie said in a written statement.

Griffith created another memorable character, the folksy defense lawyer in “Matlock” in the 1980s and 1990s, but it was his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor on the “The Andy Griffith Show” in the 1960s that gave him a place in television history.

The show depicted life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith’s own hometown, Mount Airy, in that state.

There was little crime to fight in Mayberry so the stories centered on the sheriff and his interactions with the quirky townspeople.

R.I.P: Rodney King, Poster Child for Police Brutality Found Dead, Aged 47

June 17th, 2012 Filed under: R.I.P. by MetalEditor

(Photo: The Associated Press – Matt Sayles)

(New York Times) — Rodney G. King, whose 1991 videotaped beating by the Los Angeles police became a symbol of the nation’s continuing racial tensions and subsequently led to a week of deadly race riots after the officers were acquitted, was found dead Sunday in a swimming pool at the home he shared with his fiancée in Rialto, Calif. He was 47.

There was no evidence of foul play, the Rialto police said.

Mr. King, whose life was a roller coaster of drug and alcohol abuse, multiple arrests and unwanted celebrity, pleaded for calm during the 1992 riots. More than 55 people were killed and 600 buildings destroyed in the violence.

In a phrase that became part of American culture, he asked at a news conference, “Can we all get along?”

“People look at me like I should have been like Malcolm X or Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks,” he told The Los Angeles Times in April. “I should have seen life like that and stay out of trouble, and don’t do this and don’t do that. But it’s hard to live up to some people’s expectations.”
