(Metal Injection) – Go away Westboro Baptist Church, nobody likes you… You are really just asking for it at this point.

Shortly after news spread of Jeff Hanneman’s passing last week, the modern day trolls in the Westboro Baptist Church came forward with some offensive tweets. Pleased with the attention they were getting, the band of religious misfits decided to keep moving forward and plan to picket Jeff Hanneman’s funeral. A new tweet from the Church reveals their plan: To sing their parody of Crazy Train at the Memorial.

Wait, what?! They wrote a parody of “Crazy Train”?! This can’t be good. Turns out this is a thing they’ve done at previous funerals and it’s sort of become their calling card. Naturally, the song is terrible. The group deciding to pull this out of their hat, basically proves they are just hypocritical trolls. If they truly were serving God, wouldn’t the last song they want to parody be that of a musician who goes by the moniker of the “Prince of Darkness?”

For those who want to pay respects, fans of the heavy metal guitar player will be given the chance to at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium on May 23. Billboard reports that the memorial will last four hours, from 3.30-7.30pm, and that up to 4,000 people will be able to attend on a first come, first serve basis.

The guitarist, and founding member of Slayer, died at the age of 49 last week (May 2) in a California hospital. A statement posted on Slayer’s website on May 9 revealed the cause of death to be alcohol-related cirrhosis.

The band comments; “All that May Bleed’ shows but one facet of a quite diverse album, but we chose this song as a first glimpse into ‘The Wild Hunt’ because of its bombastic lunacy and white-eyed malevolence which could be said to constitute a main foundation for the album. CHTHONIC reveals the first of a series of video singles from their forthcoming new full-length. “Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace”

May 14th, 2013 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

Today, Taiwanese metal ensemble CHTHONIC reveals the first of a series of video singles from their forthcoming new full-length. “Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace” comes by way of the band’s seventh studio recording, Bú-Tik. With Bú-Tik, CHTHONIC continue their mission to build awareness of the myths of Taiwan and the tragic events in their country’s history. Centered around the story of the 228 Massacre, the Bú-Tik Palace and the Mirror Of Retribution, Bú-Tik highlights what bassist Doris Yeh describes as “righteous violence, justifiable defense, and the armed spirits!”

The video clip for “Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace” was spawned from a collaboration between longtime working associate/director Chuang Chi-wen and martial arts choreographer Jeremy Yang. Elaborates Yeh, “The BuTik Palace in Puli was used as command headquarters by Japanese colonial government to repress a Seediq Aboriginal Uprising in Wushe in 1930. During the initial phase of the 228 Massacre in 1947, militiamen in Taiwan also used it as its command headquarters. The chants in the second half of the song are the names of all martyrs who sacrificed themselves in resistance against dictators and fought for independence. The ideology of ‘Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace’ was really suited for using martial arts to express its platform. Whenever we are interviewed overseas,” she continues, “we are always asked if Asians know martial arts, and before, we would immediately deny it, but later we thought; ‘why don’t we really shoot such an MV for you guys?’”

To properly create the video, the band members spent more than a month in training. Despite the crash course in martial arts and an obvious spike in fitness levels however, on the day of shoot all members suffered numerous bruises and injuries. Vocalist Freddy Lim’s back was particularly blistered by all the wires. Commented Lim later with a wry smile, “Next time, we can’t just follow whatever Doris says. Her ideas are often very dangerous.”

“Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace” was filmed around Bú-Tik Palace in Tainan, shooting the real scene and combining it with 3D imaging techniques. With the support of Tainan City Hall, the director and the entire crew, CHTHONIC successfully created the first martial art video with Taiwan historical monument scenes. In addition, the song features popular Taiwanese opera actress Meiyun Tang as the guest singer. Said Lim, “I really like Tang’s work. When I sent her the invitation, I didn’t expect that she would nod her head without doubt!”

Bú-Tik was recorded at Sweden’s Sweetspot Studio by producer Rickard Bengtson, who also worked on 2011’s critically-lauded Takasago Army full-length and finds the band sharpening their signature brand of self-dubbed symphonic “orient metal.”Bú-Tik will be released in North America via Spinefarm Records US later this June.

Killing Joke unveil new video single “Corporate Elect”

May 14th, 2013 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

In celebration of their astounding thirty-fifth anniversary, KILLING JOKE today unveils their latest video single in the form of “Corporate Elect.” The tune comes by way of the band’s critically-lauded MMXII full-length released last year via Spinefarm Records and serves as a taster of the band’s three-CD anthology — The Singles Collection 1979-2012.

Conceived, filmed and directed by Mikee Goodman, the video is only the fourth official clip sanctioned by the band in the past few years, following “In Excelsis, the animated “European Super State” and the “In Cythera” clips in which the band have barely appeared. Notes Goodman, former frontman of UK outfit SikTh, one half of Primal Rock Rebellion (along with Iron Maiden guitarist, Adrian Smith), and now recording with new project, Outpatients: “This video has been my biggest creative challenge yet. I had never previously met Jaz Coleman, but was blown away by the powerful and passionate performance he delivered. I did not sleep properly for five weeks. Now I have, I have looked at it again with fresh eyes. And smiled. I was honored to be asked to make a music video for KILLING JOKE, and so pleased to hear they liked it.”

The Singles Collection 1979-2012 captures KILLING JOKE’s ever-evolving legacy with a series of dark, apocalyptic songs that have successfully combined disco, funk and shamanic wisdom with the dark side of punk rock. Called “a timely reminder why KILLING JOKE continue to be held in such high esteem,” by Drowned In Sound, The Singles Collection 1979-2012 delivers thirty-three career-spanning singles over two CDs with an additional third disc of rarities which includes previously unreleased studio tracks. The three-CD version will be limited in number, reverting to two CDs containing the singles tracks. Notes BrooklynVegan, “KILLING JOKE is, like many of the great bands of our time, unique and generally unclassifiable. Punk in both ethos and origin, the UK band has dipped its toe in industrial, metal, funk and dance music in their close-to-35-year career, carving out their own niche and more importantly their own sound.”

If you missed it, you can still check out a stream of “Four Stations Of The Sun,” a remix of which appeared on the 1998 LP Wardance – The Remixes and included on disc three of The Singles Collection courtesy of BrookynVegan at THIS LOCATION. You can also hear the band’s “Timewave” demo, brought to you by Decibel Magazine HERE. Previously unreleased, the track was recorded during the Absolute Dissent studio sessions and is included on the third rarities disc.

SUBLIME to release classic concert – 3 RING CIRCUS: LIVE AT THE PALACE – OCTOBER 21, 1995 On June 18th 2013

May 2nd, 2013 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

Band’s First Ever Complete Live Recording on DVD and CD Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Concert Available in Three Package Configurations – DVD, CD, and 2DVD+CD Deluxe Package Featuring Bonus Show

Los Angeles, CA (May 1, 2013) – Unearthing a concert that captures one of the most influential bands of the 1990s standing on the cusp of becoming a multi-platinum household name, UMe, Geffen, Gasoline Alley and Skunk Records have announced the upcoming release of Sublime’s 3 Ring Circus: Live at the Palace – October 21, 1995. Set for release on June 18, 2013, the package marks the first-ever complete Sublime concert to be officially released on DVD and CD. This new release also celebrates the 25th anniversary of the seminal Long Beach, CA band, who performed their first official show on July 4, 1988 and went on to release a string of critically acclaimed hit singles. In the process, they earned legions of devoted fans during a vital career that inspired countless other artists. 3 Ring Circus: Live at the Palace – October 21, 1995 is currently available for pre-order at the Sublime store (http://sublimelbc.com/store) and Amazon (http://smarturl.it/SublimePalaceCDDVD).

3 Ring Circus: Live at the Palace – October 21, 1995 catches the trio of late frontman/guitarist/songwriter Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh in top form before a packed house at the legendary Palace in Hollywood, CA. Sublime tears through 27 songs, including their hits “Date Rape,” “Badfish,” and “40 Oz To Freedom,” as well as covers of classic songs that reflect the band’s broad stylistic range of influences (“54-46 Was My Number” by Toots & the Maytals, “House of Suffering” by Bad Brains and the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias”). More than 78 minutes of the band’s performance and on-stage antics are on full display in a sold-out setting, with remastered and remixed multi-source live audio culled from the original master tapes.

3 Ring Circus: Live at the Palace – October 21, 1995 will be available in three package configurations. The DVD package will contain the concert video, which is newly edited using Hi-8 video and recently discovered 16mm and Super 8 film footage; a CD version will contain the live concert audio; and a 2DVD+CD Deluxe package will feature the audio and video, the original Hi-8 Palace concert video (unedited), an exclusive poster and laminated backstage pass housed in an eco-friendly 8-panel softpak, as well as an additional bonus concert video of Sublime live at the Las Palmas Theater (from February 17, 1995).

The track list for 3 Ring Circus: Live at the Palace – October 21, 1995 is as follows:
· “Great Stone”
· “We’re Only Gonna Die for Our Arrogance”
· “Don’t Push”
· “Garden Grove”
· “Don’t Push”
· “Right Back”
· “New Thrash”
· “Saw Red”
· “Badfish”
· “All You Need”
· “Hope”
· “Foolish Fool”
· “Falling Idols”
· “Caress Me Down”
· “40 Oz to Freedom”
· “Ebin”
· “54-46 Was My Number”
· “Date Rape”
· “House of Suffering”
· “D.J.s”
· “I Love My Dog”
· “Pool Shark”
· “Work That We Do”
· “Greatest Hits”
· “Smoke Two Joints”
· “Scarlet Begonias”
· “Ring the Alarm”

In October of 1995, Sublime was riding the momentum of a year that saw them sign a record deal with MCA Records’ subsidiary Gasoline Alley, as well as heavy rotation on KROQ for their single “Date Rape,” originally released on the band’s brilliant 1992 Skunk Records album, 40 oz. to Freedom (now nearly 3X platinum). The Long Beach trio had also just come off of a headlining slot on that summer’s Warped Tour—the first ever edition of that perennial trek—from which Sublime were subsequently booted from the East Coast leg for their infamously chaotic debauchery (before being asked back). With a surprise runaway local hit from an album the band had been selling for three years from the trunks of their cars, Sublime and its innovative musical fusion and subcultural voice were on their way to becoming an underground classic. Sublime’s 1995 “3 Ring Circus” tour also featured support from Chicago’s renowned schizophrenic street denizen and anti-hero, the late Wesley Willis, and his Fiasco Band; Brooklyn’s hip-hop ensemble Lordz of Brooklyn; and a young group of unknown adolescents from “the Valley” called Incubus.

Emilie Autumn Premieres new video FLAG (Fight Like A Girl)

April 23rd, 2013 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

ARTISTdirect.com has teamed up with Emilie Autumn to premiere her new video for “Fight Like a Girl”—from the album of the same name—directed by Darren Bousman, whose resume lists impressive credits such asSaw II, Saw III, Saw IV, REPO! The Genetic Opera and The Devil’s Carnival. It’s also produced by Laura Bousman!

Emilie Autumn is a woman of the arts, with a very specific and arresting aesthetic, a true Renaissance girl, as she has released a book The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls. The album is based on the book and therefore the video is, as well.

Get ready to fight like a girl. The cinematic, sweeping, film-like clip reminded us a bit of Carnivale in its visuals.

April 16th, 2013 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by MetalEditor

KATAKLYSM have recruited ex-NEURAXIS drummer Oli Beaudoin to record their new album Waiting for the End to Come and to play the band’s upcoming shows starting on June 30th in Costa Rica.

“Oli played with KATAKLYSM before on the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise last year and he did a phenomenal show,” commented guitarist J-F Dagenais. “He is extremely talented , focused and ready to do the job needed. Some of you might be familiar with him from his work with NEURAXIS and session work with KEEP OF KALESSIN and BELPHEGOR. We are very happy to have him on board and he comes with a thumbs up approval from Max as well. We have one hell of a ride in store for you with this new album so let it begin.”

Upcoming shows:

5/24 EXTREMEFEST (Germany ) with Max Duhamel

5/31 BEASTIVAL open air (Germany) with Max Duhamel

6/1 METALFEST CZECH REP. open air with Max Duhamel

6/14 D-TOX ROCKFEST (Canada) with Max Duhamel

6/30 SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA with Cannibal Corpse with Oli Beaudoin

8/9 – 8/10 BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR (UK) with Oli Beaudoin

Max Duhamel, drummer of the Montreal based death metal powerhouse, KATAKLYSM, recently announced that he is taking a break from the band and won’t be performing on their new record. “I have been struggling with many personal issues the last year but lately, the main one has been alcohol,” commented Duhamel previously. “It’s been affecting my body in a very negative way to the point that when I came home after the EX DEO tour we just did, I tried to stop drinking for few days and it’s been very hard without having any with drawls symptoms. I’ve also lost a lot of weight as some of noticed recently and I’m not in good shape.”

KATAKLYSM have released the following statement in response:

“We as a band of brothers stand by Max’s decision to get better and to rise from his demons. We all have them; some of us try to hide them and pretend they don’t exist, some of us have the courage to confront them. Max has shown strength to fight his. We stand by him and hope that he returns home when he is ready. In the meanwhile, I want everyone to know for those who haven’t seen the Iron Will documentary that this band’s story is one of drama, pain and the long road to victory. We will practice what we preach on our album and we will come out swinging hard and strong with this new record. We will find a suitable replacement and we will announce him in the next few weeks. We will not disappoint any of you. We have read the messages of encouragements you have posted; we have the best fans. As the saying goes ‘the show must go on.’ Here’s a cool clip we found from Rocky that describes well what is to come from your veterans. ‘Horse power.’ See you soon.”

The new album Waiting for the End to Come is tentatively scheduled for a late 2013 / early 2014 release. The album will be recorded by guitarist Jean Francois Dagenais and mixed by Zeuss (SUFFOCATION, HATEBREED, ARSIS).

“Drones of the Awakening,” which was recorded at guitarist Stefano Morabito’s 16th Cellar Studio (Hour of Penance, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Inherit Disease) in Rome, received a 9/10 rating from Outburn magazine, who noted “explosive blastbeating and machine gunning.” You can view a lyric video for the song “Rise of the Orgamechanism” — described by NoCleanSinging as “a galvanizing onslaught of technical riffing and fully weaponized percussion” — below.

Skinny Puppy to release new offering ‘Weapon’ May 28th 2013 via Metropolis Records

April 9th, 2013 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

“The human animal is a ‘weapon’,” says SKINNY PUPPPY vocalist niVek ohGr about the eponymous title of their upcoming album (Metropolis Records; release date: May 28, 2013). “Every action and thought, conceived then carried out; whether political, physical or spiritual, has the potential to cause harm and misery; just as the same action, not underwritten with fear and misinformation, but carried by only positive intent would have the opposite effect.”

Standing as a commentary on that which it is named after, Weapon, or more specifically, to the concurrent glorification of the gun culture and simultaneous horror at the devastation guns can cause, the stunning new album tackles the difficult topic in an intelligent and philosophical way without losing track of the music built around it. A return to form of sorts while still pushing forward as Skinny Puppy always has, Weapon is a tour de force whose pop undertones are a compelling counterpoint to the vocals and lyrics that reflect our mass homogenization of an instrument of death into an entertainment centerpiece.

“The human race has been in bondage; boondoggled by the fixed shell game, shill-laden pro lobbyist agenda for nuclear energy,” he continues. “While claiming to be ‘clean energy’, 96% of what comes out is completely foreign to our planet and completely toxic; it is anything but ‘clean’.” It is this sort of intelligent musical discourse that has been Skinny Puppy’s protocol for over three decades. Godfathers of the electro-industrial music scene, Ogre along with cEvin Key have been major voices in issues that plague society, from vivisection to pollution to drugs to even the advent of AIDS. Similarly as our culture dives deeper into the threat of being a firearm-based society, tackling this idea of weaponry as a centralizing focus of society was only natural. “We manufacture weapons … pure and simple,” Ogre explains. “The idea of boiling water to make steam was only the afterthought and a means to sell this Machiavellian weapons program to the populace.”

Kicking off with “wornin’” in all of its midnight dancefloor glory, Weapon combines all the elements of the genre that they trailblazed – fusing elements of electro, new wave, industrial, and rock. “We had some talk about doing an album with only the tools available at that earlier period of ’83,” he says. “What became clear, however, was a need to get back to simple and direct song writing with strong abstract themes that correlate to the deeper concepts within the recording.” From the pulsating rhythm of “illisiT” to the analog synths of “gLowbeL” to the mechanized “tsudanama” with its sonic bends and warps, the album embraces the Skinny Puppy sound wholeheartedly and raises it up a notch. “The disc starts off strong with ‘wornin’ which happened to be the first track that lit the way on this path that became weapon,” he says. “The two songs following ['iLLisiT' and 'salvo'] are two of my favorites for reasons mentioned in the answer above – simple and direct.”

Formed in 1982, Skinny Puppy has gone through many shifts and changes but the duo of cEvin Key and Ogre has always remained constant and consistent. When asked about that consistency, he replies, “The obvious answer being that the two flesh bag components, who first conceptualized Skinny Puppy, are still breathing and eating. What differentiates us perhaps is that we have been lucky to work with very talented artists throughout our careers – fellow bandmate Dwayne Goettel, producers like Dave Ogilvie, Mark Walk, and mixers like Ken Marshall and Adrian Sherwood have aided and helped us contour and hone in our sound; reign in the beast, so to say.”

With a new chapter added to the Skinny Puppy legacy with the upcoming release of this album, the album’s subject manner remains front, center and pronto, as it should. With massacres seemingly occurring with more frequency and gun control still a hot button topic in politics, it’s fitting that it’s a topic they feel needs to be addressed. “Weapons and pharmaceuticals become the last bastion of investment wealth, the last stop for manufacturing in a crumbling power system still promoting mutual assured destruction,” Ogre concludes. “To maim, sicken and control, by genetically radiating and bombing populations back to the Stone Age; then manage the mutations through new medicines while claiming the race for a cure of this self-inflicted environmental disease is right around the corner… Weapons then procure the evolutionary next step. We are weapons.”

Skinny Puppy is niVek ohGr, cEvin Key and Mark Walk. Weapon will be released via Metropolis Records on May 28, 2013.

Rick Ross defends obvious misunderstanding of ‘Rape Lyrics’ while activists target sponsor Reebok

April 4th, 2013 Filed under: News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

While Ross takes to social media sites to apologize, Activists are understandably still up in arms about the offensive lyrics. The lyric that spurred the whole thing on is below:

“Put Molly all in her champagne. She ain’t even know it,” he says on the track. “I took her home and I enjoyed that. She ain’t even know it.”

(HIPHOPDX) – UltraViolet, a women’s rights group, has announced a protest set to take place at Reebok’s flagship store in New York City later today (April 4) due to Rick Ross’ current deal with the athletic apparel company. UltraViolet is protesting because of lyrics in Ross’ verse on Rocko’s “U.N.E.N.O.” where he raps about putting molly in a girl’s drink without her knowing and then taking her home.

“We are appalled that Reebok would pay a spokesperson who brags about enjoying drugging and raping a woman,” Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet, explained. “Reebok devotes a lot of time, energy and money to marketing to women–and now they are paying a man who is literally bragging about raping us while absurdly insisting it can’t possibly be rape if he doesn’t use the word ‘rape.’ Reebok is apparently okay promoting rape culture, but when one out of five women are the victim of an attempted or completed rape, that has consequences.”

Chaudhary was referring to Ross’ recent attempt to clarify the rhyme. His statement below says this was “a misinterpretation.”

“Woman is the most precious gift known to man, you understand? It was a misunderstanding with a lyric, a misinterpretation where the term rape wasn’t used,” he noted. “I would never use the word rape in my records.”

UltraViolet released a statement on the matter saying his attempt to clarify the line only added to their reasons for protesting.

“Reebok and Rick Ross have crossed a line— not only does Ross brag about drugging and raping a woman, he is pushing the idea that if you don’t use the word ‘rape,’ it doesn’t count. We are fed up and disgusted with Reebok and Thursday we will bring this fight to their front steps.”
