Legal LeakZ: FREDDIE GIBBS – COLD DAY IN HELL (FULL ALBUM)

October 31st, 2011 Filed under: Legal LeakZ by Editor in Chief

The next musical massacre from Gary, Indiana’s Freddie Gibbs takes shape in the form of Cold Day In Hell, a frigid offering flaunting Gangsta Gibbs’ street-savvy vernacular with verses from a veritable who’s-who of likeminded spitters; the venerable Young Jeezy, Three Six Mafioso Juicy J, Rocafella ex-pat Freeway and West Coast stalwart Dom Kennedy are among the lyricists tapped for the project. Once again, Freddie is pulling no punches, unleashing his verbal vendetta over production from J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Big K.R.I.T., Cardo, DJ Burn One, Block Beattaz, Beatnick & K-Salaam and more.

Los Angeles clothing/media purveyor LRG has partnered with Gibbs for the release, making manifest Freddie’s creative vision in the album art and pending videos. The album cover features a disheveled marquee, a nod to Gary, Indiana’s tragic landmark, the Palace Theater as well as numerous crack-boom and blacksploitation archetypes brought to life by prolific LA graffiti writer and MSK affiliate, Augor. Similarly, the concept for the first video, the grimy “Anything To Survive”, is envisioned by LRG in-house production team Wood Works and Derrick Pike. Unwilling to merely just stamp a logo on the mixtape and call it finished, LRG is assisting in a non-traditional sense, helping to oversee the project by rounding out Freddie’s vision with their resources. The proof is in the product.

Rapper Big Pooh Announces Dirty Pretty Things For November 1 Release

September 13th, 2011 Filed under: Legal LeakZ, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

Rapper Big Pooh is excited to announce the upcoming release of his new album, Dirty Pretty Things. Serving as the second official solo album from the now-solo emcee, Dirty Pretty Things will be released November 1st via Big Pooh’s newly formed label, For Members Only.

In 2005, Big Pooh first stepped outside of the Little Brother umbrella, releasing his debut solo album, Sleepers. Since then, the fan favorite group released a handful of highly regarded albums before finally disbanding last year, and so, as Big Pooh sat down to begin crafting Dirty Pretty Things, with his career as part of Little Brother was coming to a close, he found inspiration in a movie that he felt mirrored his own journey through music. “I always thought Dirty Pretty Things was a really dope movie,” remarks Pooh. “But it was overlooked for whatever reasons, the same way I’ve been overlooked as a solo artist.”

It makes sense, then, that an album intent on proving, once and for all, that Pooh can stand alone as a solo artist would also serve as some of the rapper’s most personal work to date. “This album is me; it allowed me to give listeners a piece of my soul and reveal a lot of what I’ve been dealing with over the past couple years,” explains Pooh. “Dirty Pretty Things is about looking past outside appearance and finding out what’s really going on inside. It’s about the truth.”

Joining Pooh for Dirty Pretty Things is an impressive cast of producers and rappers, but more than that, they’re artists that Pooh felt best complemented his own vision. “I decided who to work with based on feel,” explains Pooh, who enlisted the production efforts of Nottz, DJ Khalil, Focus… , and more, while Torae, Joe Scudda, Carlitta Durand, Darien Brockington, and others lent vocals. “I’m not into forcing music,” notes Pooh. “Everyone was chosen based on how I felt they would fit the puzzle I put together.”

One of those puzzle pieces was Family Biz, Ent., who lent their touch to “Medicine Man,” released as the first song and video from the album. Joining that track are a handful of other personal favorites of Pooh. “Free,” for example, is a track about learning how to be comfortable in your own skin. “Are You Ready,” featuring Torae and produced by Nottz, is another standout, as is “Real Love,” produced by Focus…. “‘Real Love’ is about the current relationship I have with my brother,” explains Pooh, and the song is just another example of how Pooh’s most personal work has translated into his strongest. “All of the personal and professional anguish led up to this moment,” says Pooh. “Dirty Pretty Things marks my progression as a man, my progression as a businessman, and, most of all, my progression as an artist.”

Legal LeakZ: DJ JS-1 Feat. KRS-1 w/ Rahzel – “Boom Slap”

May 12th, 2011 Filed under: Legal LeakZ by Editor in Chief

Third Volume Of JS-1′s Ground Original Series To Be Released June 21st

The Song:

If you’re fed up with producers who make “fake J Dilla beats” and “pop-star radio DJs” like DJ JS-1 is, the best thing to do is slap them across the face with some real boom bap sounds. So that’s exactly what the Queens, New York DJ did with his new single, “Boom Slap,” and who better to amp up the slap than two of the kings of boom bap, KRS-One and Rahzel. The respective visionaries of rapping and beat boxing join their friend JS-1 on the first leak from No One Cares, which will be released on June 21st via Fat Beats Records. “My biggest selling single to date was my first single, ‘Essentials,’ which featured KRS & Rahzel,” says JS-1. “That was on my first album, Ground Original 1 in 2002. With this album being Ground Original 3 and the final installment of that series, I wanted to close out with a KRS & Rahzel track.”

Since his start in the early 90′s, DJ JS-1 has witnessed hip-hop evolve over the years, and “Boom Slap” explains exactly how he feels about hip-hop in 2011. “I’m all about boom bap, regardless of how some of these new-jacks feel,” explains the DJ/producer. “There are tons of people making pretty music, and that’s nice for an R&B group, but we make that boom bap that slaps you when you hear it.” This song does just that, as JS-1′s hard-hitting beat serves as the foundation for Rahzel’s background vocals and patented vocal scratches, while KRS verbally assaults the beat with his unmistakable flow. “The style of hip hop we create is not going anywhere,” says JS-1. “People can say what they want – make what they want – but this style will always be here. Forever, and ever, we will be here forever…”

DJ JS-1′s No One Cares will be available for purchase on June 21st on Fat Beats Records.

Legal LeakZ: MARAZENE MACHINE – “Live Wire” ( Motley Crue cover) FREE DOWNLOAD!

March 22nd, 2011 Filed under: Legal LeakZ by Editor in Chief

Chicago’s Electro-Metal MARAZENE MACHINE have made their edgy electronic/whiskey/sex-fueled rendition of the MOTLEY CRUE classic, “Live Wire,” available for FREE download (with email signup) for a limited time at the following location: www.reverbnation.com/marazenemachine . The track is also available for purchase through iTunes.  [ FULL stream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk7ruQeIjek ]

“LIVE WIRE” marks the first new material from the band since 2007 and provides the first listen as to how the bands new album and continually developing sound is shaping up. Two other new song titles – “WELCOME TO YOUR HOLIDAY” and “THE VERY SAD FATE OF MISS DESDEMONA ANTOINETTE MARCEAUX”, have previously been announced and are expected to be key tracks on the as yet untitled collection.

A release date for the new album is forthcoming. Labels interested in working with the band should contact mgmt@narcicessity.com.

The principle songwriting tandem of producers DieTrich Thrall and Nikk Skum have largely kept a low profile since the tragic loss of co-founding member KRISTOPHER “KRISTOV” KEMP to a three year battle with colon cancer in early 2009. In recent months however the members have been dropping hints as to demo progress while putting the finishing touches on the follow-up to 2007′s critically regarded ‘MachiNation’ album

Legal LeakZ: “She’s Enough” by Atmosphere

March 11th, 2011 Filed under: Legal LeakZ by Editor in Chief

Atmosphere returns with their 7th official studio album and the newest addition to their unparalleled body of work. The Family Sign comes from a place well refined and firmly planted, from a universal perspective. It’s about being okay with losing friends and strengthening your bonds with others, celebrating the person who’s been the most positive in your life, your kids, your homies, leaving the people you need to behind, and bringing the ones you love with you. It’s about your family, your time and the time you have with them. It’s about living and dying. It’s the truth about family, that it comes from loyalty as much as biology. It’s about breaking down your perceptions of family and really appreciating the people who’ve made you who you are and continue doing so.

The Family Sign is Atmosphere’s most personal and intimate album yet; it involves and engages the listener like never before. Slug’s signature voice weaves in and out of Ant’s ASR-born production, Nate Collis’ bluesy guitar riffs and the sound of Erick Anderson’s unmistakable keys giving The Family Sign a fresh, unique edge without sacrificing Atmosphere’s signature sound. Join the Family April 12th, 2011.

“She’s Enough” is the 2nd song off The Family Sign which drops April 12th on Rhymesayers.

NOTTZ RAW AND ASHER ROTH JOIN FORCES FOR RAWTH EP DROPPING DECEMBER 27th

EP TO FEATURE VERSES FROM BOTH MCS AS WELL AS BEATS BY NOTTZ

Two of hip-hops most accomplished personalities, Nottz & Asher Roth join forces for a dream-team collaboration of the most charitable variety, the Rawth EP, available for free on Monday, December 27th. After meeting while Asher Roth was completing debut album Asleep In The Bread Aisle, the two cemented a hyper-productive working relationship during the recording of Nottz’s You Need This Music. The MCs decided to make an artistic donation to the hip-hop community by releasing a jaw-dropping collection of songs with stellar verses and original bangers from Nottz at no charge.

The Rawth EP features verses from both spitters, both of whom riff off of each other with wild abandon, effortlessly writing the contained material. In many ways, this release embodies the essence of hip-hop by completely disregarding convention, subscribing to the new model of internet distribution. The Rawth EP is fun, free and for the fans.

Legal LeakZ: Wu-Tang / El Michels Affair Remix Project Enter The 38th Chamber Releases Final Tracks Of Series

May 14th, 2010 Filed under: Legal LeakZ, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

After leaking the initial series of remakes from  Enter The 37th Chamber in late 2009, El Michels Affair is back with the final three installments to the remix series. Released last year on Fat Beats, Enter The 37th Chamber is El Michels Affair’s retro-soul recreation of many classic Wu-Tang Clan songs with an infusion of their signature style. In a project presented by URB.com, Fat Beats, and Audible Treats, Enter The 38th Chamber was released featuring a slew of artists remaking their own versions of these Wu-Tang Clan songs using El Michels Affair’s instrumental covers.

The first leak in this series, “C.R.E.A.M.” features A-Plus of Souls of Mischief and Knobody of the Hieroglyphics crew. While recreating a Wu-Tang anthem may be a difficult feat, the two met the lofty challenge. Over top El Michels’ jazz-soul instrumentation, the duo maintains Wu-Tang Clan’s original mantra with, “Cash rules everything around me / C.R.E.A.M. get the money / Dollar dollar bill, ya’ll.” Their new tone is complimented with upbeat guitar and bass and a more prominent embellishment of the track’s original piano melody, all while maintaining the original sounds and elements that made the track a classic.

Next on deck is Nuk Farm, N.R.O., and The Dugout’s cover of “Protect Ya Neck,” re-titled “Trifect Ya Neck.” Taking the original dialogue from Wu-Tang’s version, the cover’s distorted bass, aggressive lyrical attacks, and strong instrumentals bring Wu-Tang’s classic sound into the 21st century. Paying homage to the clan, the trifecta performed “Trifect Ya Neck” live at Southpaw in conjunction with the release of Enter The 37th Chamber.

The third and final leak is “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” by the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard of Wu-Tang Clan. Remade by Von Pea of Tanya Morgan and Spec Boogie of the Lessondary crew, the track overflows with horns and adds a child-like voice to rap the chorus. While recreating the classics was never an easy task, the variety of artists that created Enter The 38th Chamber didn’t try to overshadow the legends. Instead, they revamped the tracks to demonstrate their own unique styles, bringing new life to the Shaolin classics.
