KauseZ: Duck Down Artists Collaborate For the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation

October 20th, 2011 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

Earlier this year Dru Ha (co-owner of Duck Down Music) lost his Father to a 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s. In his Father’s honor, Dru Ha announced that he will be running the ING New York City Marathon on November 6th in an effort to raise donations & awareness about the horrific disease that affects over 5 million people in the United States alone. To date, Dru Ha has raised over $10,000 in donations.

Duck Down artists, Buckshot, Smif N Wessun, Promise & Double-O, of Kidz In The Hall, dedicated their time to creating an original song, “Run To Remember,” in recognition of Dru Ha running the NYC Marathon. Double-O produced the track. The song was recorded at Rubber Tracks in Brooklyn, NY.

Today, the song is available exclusively at iTunes for only 99 cents. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Research foundation.

Live Review: The Shaun G Celebration and Fundraiser, December 14th, 2010, Vancouver, B.C.

December 17th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, Reviews - Live by Editor in Chief

Live Review – The Shaun G. Celebration and Fundraiser
Tuesday, December 14th, 2010
Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver B.C.

100G’s (aka $100,000) in the memory of Shaun G. That was the plan on a cold Tuesday night as the Commodore Ballroom held host to some of Van City’s hottest performers paying tribute to the Late Shaun G, who recently passed away from a rare cancer called ‘Angiosarcoma’. The charity event was put together by friends and family to help raise money for the newly formed Shaun G Foundation. Everyone attending was given a set of white Shaun G sunglasses at the door, and could purchase merch and drinks with 100% of proceeds from the night going towards cancer research.

DJ’s Eric Carver vs. Jamie Van Goulden helped get the night get started and would be followed by a slew of other DJs including The Goodfellas and C-Stylz, but it was the performances by groups like The Boombox Saints, Kyprios, Mass Undergoe, and Dirty Radio that really brought the crowd of people to the floor, laying down a mix of unique performances.

Around midnight there was an announcement that the event had already brought in $98,000 just shy of the 100 Gs, this prompted people to start handing twenty dollar and even hundred dollar bills to the MC on stage. Not even twenty minutes later DJ Flipout brought Shaun’s Mom and Dad on stage, as well as Shaun’s close friend Pedro and waited for complete silence asking everyone to remember why they had come out tonight. After gaining the entire audiences attention Flipout made the announcement that Shaun’s parents had just handed him a cheque that brought them over their projected amount, ensuing was a large roar from the previously silent crowd.

On a very positive note, the 100G charity show wrapped up the night up with acts from the Tito Deville Band, Killawatt crew (and a reunited at least for the evening) Red-1 and The Rascalz, plus Destineak, completing the showcase of musical talents that had been assembled, and as his friends and family had stated throughout the evening; it was a party Shaun would have been proud of.

KauseZ: MUSIC THERAPY RIDE TO FUND NIMBUS RECORDING STUDIO AT BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

August 30th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

Committee members of the 9th annual Music Therapy Ride have announced that a percentage of the funds raised from this year’s ride will go to the Nimbus School of Recording Arts in order to build an in-house recording studio at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Co-founder of the Nimbus School of Recording Arts and legendary producer, Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), is the visionary behind the project. His own daughter spent many years in Children’s Hospital, and in that time he has grown close to the cause of Music Therapy.

“We are grateful to the Vancouver Music Therapy Ride committee for helping us make this dream a reality”, says Richardson. Recording students from Nimbus will work with Music Therapists at the hospital to run the studio. “This is what Nimbus is about”, says Richardson, who is insistent on his students learning how to give back to their community.

This philanthropic approach has given cancer patient Megan McNeil the opportunity to create and record her own song, “Will To Survive”. A talented songwriter who has been fighting cancer since she was 16, Megan decided to record a track to lift the spirits of the other kids in the chemotherapy ward.

Now 19, her single, “Will To Survive” is available on iTunes, and the corresponding video is approaching 10,000 views on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9pHISnIj2Y&feature=player_embedded.

The song will be played on radio stations nationwide starting in September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

In addition to the recording studio at BC Children’s Hospital, the Music Therapy Ride is working with Nimbus to design mobile recording studios – “Band Wagon 1” and “Band Wagon 2” – which will allow Music Therapists to work with patients at their bedside.

The Music Therapy Ride is a charity motorcycle ride from Vancouver to Whistler designed to raise funds for community-based music therapy services in B.C. To date, it has raised over $350,000 for the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund. Confirmed celebrities for this year’s ride include Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida – with more names to be announced in the upcoming weeks.

The 9th annual Music Therapy Ride will take place on September 18th, 2010. All motorcycles and cars will roll out from the River Rock Casino and Resort at 9:30am.

Sleepless in Seattle?: Nonprofit Hands Out Free Crack Pipes To Stop The Spread Of HIV

August 11th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

(HipHopWired) – A nonprofit group in Seattle is making headlines after announcing that they’re handing out free crack pipes to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The People’s Harm Reduction Alliance claims that it’s starting the controversial campaign because of the possibility of spreading the virus through cuts on the mouth from broken pipes and to prevent the spread of hepatitis from mouth sores.

So far research has shown HIV transmission from dirty needles but not necessarily through crack sores.

Michael Hanrahan, the manager of education and prevention services of the HIV/STD program with Public Health in Seattle, describes the concept however as “theoretically plausible.”

The group is also known for distributing pipe filters and ascorbic acid for injecting crack while also supplying heroin users with clean needles and a drug that reduces a heroin overdose.

ADMISSION IS A BLANKET – 2nd ANNUAL BLANKFEST QUEBEC RAISES BLANKETS FOR MONTREAL’S HOMELESS

January 28th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, Made In Canada, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

Blankfest Quebec returns for its 2nd annual blanket fundraiser benefiting Montreal’s homeless shelter, the Old Brewery Mission, on Friday, February 19th at Bar St. Laurent 2, located at 5550 St. Laurent (corner St. Viateur). Special Ops, Emery Street, Vinyl HeroThe In n Outs are proud to have answered the call in supporting the event.

“I’m really proud of this year’s line-up for Blankfest Quebec and I’m looking forward to breaking last year’s record of collecting over 500 blankets and items of clothing for Montreal’s Homeless,” commented Blankfest Quebec organizer Jon Asher.

Blankfest Quebec’s primary goal is to collect blanket, socks, underwear and non-perishable food for the homeless in Montreal on behalf of the Old Brewery Mission shelter. Montreal’s winter months are known for having temperatures well below zero and those who are homeless run the risk of frostbite and possible death due to overexposure. Blankfest Quebec, in cooperation with the Old Brewery Mission, aims to aid those who are less fortunate and keeps the homeless warm while living on the streets.

“This event is a simple one for everyone – ADMISSION IS BLANKET! I strongly urge people to come out and support this event and even if you can’t stay for the music, I ask everyone to make the effort and bring down a donation for Montreal’s homeless. People forget about the charity organizations after the holidays and that is why it is important to raise donations and aid those who are in need in our community,” says Jon Asher.

Blankfest Quebec has been organized by Jon Asher, in collaboration with the Old Mission Brewery, after Jon read about his friend, New York City indie rock veteran Kenn Rowell of The Baghdaddios, founding Blankfest in 1997 and organizing an annual blanket fundraiser in New York City.

In the past, Rowell says, Blank-Fest NYC has raised more than 6,000 total donations that have been distributed to the homeless in the New York City area and has inspired similar efforts in New Jersey, Manhattan and Nottingham, UK. Among the many distinguished artists who have performed at past international Blank-Fests are: Rothberg (EMI), Buddy Cage (Grateful Dead), Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) and Meg Griffin (Sirius Radio).

Tickets or reservations are not required: simply bring one or more blankets, socks, underwear and/or non-perishable foods to the event.

For more information, contact event organizer Jon Asher at 514-581-5780 or email ashermedia@gmail.com

Going on The Nod…X 2!: Court opens door for second injection site

January 22nd, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, Made In Canada, News/Calendar/Industry, Tales From The Eastside™ by Editor in Chief

(Courier) – The nonprofit society that operates the city’s supervised drug injection site on East Hastings is reviewing a recent court ruling to see whether it can open a second facility.

Mark Townsend, executive director of the PHS Community Services Society, described the B.C. Court of Appeal’s Jan. 15 ruling as a victory for the continued operation of the Insite injection site–and possibly a new facility.

“For sure we’re going to start looking and working on a second site,” Townsend told the Courier. “But the form that site would take is going to get a little bit dictated by what this new ruling would mean. But that doesn’t mean one is opening tomorrow.”

Operators hope to open a second facility similar to the Insite supervised injection site on East Hastings.View Larger Image View Larger Image

Operators hope to open a second facility similar to the Insite supervised injection site on East Hastings.

The court of appeal’s lengthy 2-1 ruling, which is available on the court’s website, backs a May 2008 B.C. Supreme Court decision to allow Insite to operate indefinitely.

Insite was set to close June 30, 2008 but B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ian Pitfield granted staff and users a constitutional exemption from the country’s drug laws.

A Welcome Letter from The 2010 Poverty Olympics Organizing Committee

January 16th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, Made In Canada, News/Calendar/Industry, Tales From The Eastside™ by Editor in Chief

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to Vancouver. You are coming to one of the greatest cities in the world: eye-popping scenery, efficient services, moderate climate, relaxed and diverse population.

The United Nations survey on livability rates Vancouver in the top handful of cities on earth. And in 2010, we’re going to host the winter Olympics! What a great opportunity to enjoy Vancouver’s attractions — including all the Olympic legacies, like new stadiums, highways and tourist sights.

But one legacy that won’t be so enjoyable is the thousands of homeless people on the streets of Vancouver. You can’t help seeing them as you walk around downtown, and in many other neighbourhoods around the city.

Unless we do something about this shameful situation, visitors in 2010 will be treated to a city with more homeless people than athletes competing in the Games!

Grinding poverty and growing homelessness are happening despite some bold promises to create a positive Olympic legacy — promises such as building more social housing, reducing homelessness, and not displacing poor people to make way for Olympics-driven development.

So we are organizing new games that reflect the unique local flavour of the 2010 host city — the Poverty Olympics. The first annual games took place on Sunday February 3, in the Downtown Eastside (Vancouver’s poorest neighbourhood).

We’ve asked the International Olympic Committee to make these games part of the official 2010 program. We hope that shining the international spotlight on the dark side of our prosperous city and province might finally convince our governments to take action.

We hope, dear visitor, that you’ll take a few minutes to look around… Learn more about the poverty amid plenty… Help us make change by taking some simple actions… And don’t forget to invite your friends to visit our fair city!

Sincerely,

Poverty Olympics Organizing Committee

STATEMENT BY WYCLEF JEAN ON HAITI EARTHQUAKE

January 14th, 2010 Filed under: KauseZ, News/Calendar/Industry by Editor in Chief

The following is a statement by Wyclef Jean on yesterday’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti:

“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and several very strong aftershocks – struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince. I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.

President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.”

Many people have already reached out to see what they can do right now. We are asking those interested Canadians to please visit www.Yele.org and click on DONATE.
