$70,000 in Tattoos: Don McClintock Wins at the Lower Hutt Charity Tattoo Show.

November 2nd, 2008 Filed under: Inksploitation, News/Calendar/Industry, The Cutting Edge, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

(Source -Stuff/New Zealand)

It takes seven years and $70,000 to get a body like Don McClintock, who was named the overall winner of the Lower Hutt Charity Tattoo Show.

The 54-year-old also won the best tattooed arm, back, leg and full body sections as he stormed his way to the $1000 winner’s cheque at Lower Hutt Town Hall.

A family crisis seven years ago resulted in the self-employed joiner from Christchurch having the names of his children tattooed around his neck.

“Then I had Lady Luck tattooed on, so our luck would change, and the whole thing just took off from there. I never liked tattoos before that to be honest.”

Mr McClintock has lost count of how many tattoos he has, or how long they took his tattooist, Steve Johnson from Downunder-Tattoo, to create.

“But with a stab in the dark, it would have cost me between $60,000 and $70,000.”

The only remaining parts of his body left to cover are the backs of his feet and areas on his inner thighs.

Sarah Munro, 20, from Karori nailed the runner-up spot with her tattoos by Manu Tattoo.

The 3500 people at the two-day show also had the chance to watch tattooists, in action, including Ali Reid from ALC Headquarters in Cuba St.

More than $1000 was raised for Life Education Trust.

PAUL BOOTH CELEBRATES 20 YEARS AS A TATTOO ARTIST

October 16th, 2008 Filed under: Inksploitation, News/Calendar/Industry, The Cutting Edge, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

NEW YORK, October 15, 2008 –  Halloween weekend marks the 20-year anniversary of dark master artist, Paul Booth’s tattooing career and we just can’t let it go by without a party! Put on your costume and join us for an evening of true Halloween spirit as only Paul can do it. There will be live entertainment, collaborative painting and tattooing, costume contests, music, freakshows, and of course Fetish Dancers!   This event will be filmed for one of Paul’s award winning DVD’s.

Saturday, November 1st
– Paul Booth’s Last Rites Tattoo Theatre.  Hosted my Mistress Juliya and Jose Mangin, the evening begins at 8pm.  The admission is $5 at the door, 18 and over, 21 to drink.

Dark Art merges in all forms:

Costume contest – The top costumes will win prizes including collective memorabilia or a Halo Guitar.  The winner of ‘Best Costume’ will win a gift certificate for $1,000 of tattoo time with Paul.  Creative costumes are encouraged; Paul will be taping throughout the evening to create a DVD celebrating the hellish mayhem.

Collaborative painting – throughout the evening the Last Rites family of artists will be creating an ArtFusion Experiment.  The painting will be produced throughout the course of the evening, and a silent charity auction will provide funding for the International Child Art Foundation.

Collaborative tattoo – Paul Booth, Toxyc, and Little Dragon will be fusing their styles on the flesh for guests’ viewing pleasure.  These three Last Rite’s artists will work together on one singular freehand tattoo, embracing the unified, creative force that can only exist in that space and time.  Guests can purchase a chance to win this unique experience by visiting www.DarkImages.com and clicking the ‘Collaborative Tattoo Lottery’ link.  The winner will be announced at 9pm the evening of the event, and the tattoo will commence directly thereafter.

Performances and entertainment – TERRO.chic will provide dark aural ambience, and M9NDFUCK will provide an alternative fashion show.  Performances by Nicolette le Faye the trapeze artist, Mini-Marilyn Manson on stage, fetish dancers throughout the evening, Coney Island freakshows, and in the theater, Paul has prepared a montage of his favorite horror movie scenes.

Guests are advised to brush up on their god jokes, tattoo and horror movie trivia, as prizes will be offered throughout the night.  Mistress Juliya and Mangin will keep it hot as they roast Paul all night long.

TATTOO JEW (no – not a Stones record joke): Kosher for some, but no blessing from “The Man”

July 17th, 2008 Filed under: Inksploitation, Visuals - Art/Tattoos/Reader Submissons by Editor in Chief

(Source – NY Times)

ROBERTA KAPLAN, 71, has never been a fan of tattoos. “I’m a very Jewish person,” she said. “I was told from way, way back that you’re not supposed to desecrate your body.”Ms. Kaplan ordered her five children to renounce tattoos. (What would neighbors at synagogue think?) Her children, in turn, did the same (every third teenager may have an ankle tattoo souvenir from spring break, but that doesn’t make it right by the Torah).

By the time Ms. Kaplan’s daughter Liz Carnes, 49, had teenage daughters who wanted body art, Ms. Carnes knew how to dissuade them. “I’d say, ‘If you get a tattoo, you can’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery,’ ” said Ms. Carnes, the owner of a video equipment company in Carlsbad, Calif. “For no real reason, just that’s what my parents told me.”

Nearly every Jew, from those who go to synagogue only on holidays to those who dutifully follow Jewish law, has heard that adage. It has deterred many from being inked, even as tattoos have become widespread among N.B.A. players and housewives alike.

Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol Open New Stores on Skid Row

LA Downtown News Online

by Richard Guzman

As they walked down Fifth Street on a recent afternoon, a couple speaking Japanese stopped in front of a window display housing a bright orange Harley Davidson Road King. Its immaculate paint job was emblazoned with airbrushed images of a mustachioed lowrider and his girl.
The tattoo artist Mister Cartoon and photographer Estevan Oriol partnered with San Francisco-based Upper Playground to open clothing and art stores aimed at the urban audience. Photo by Gary Leonard.

The man snapped photos of his girlfriend as she beamed a wide smile. She probably had no idea that the motorcycle she was posing in front of belongs to one of the most acclaimed tattoo artists in the country.

The bike, and the store behind it, are owned by a man known to his fans and customers as Mister Cartoon. He is renowned for his depictions of the lowrider lifestyle, which has become a popular fashion statement throughout the world.

That lifestyle is now on display Downtown in a new store that showcases what happens when chic meets street and an urban movement becomes a brand name.

Known for his tattoo work on hip-hop stars such as Eminem, 50 Cent and Method Man, Mister Cartoon and his longtime collaborator, the photographer Estevan Oriol, partnered with San Francisco-based Upper Playground to open a pair of stores on the edge of Skid Row. The shops, called Upper Playground and The Last Laugh, debuted at the beginning of the month.
