Desert Canyons
Prosthetic Records
Newly signed to Prosthetic Records, Houston’s Scale the Summit is poised to release its newest full length Carving Desert Canyons. Featuring the stylings of musical virtuosos Chris Letchford (guitars), Travis Levrier (guitars), Jordan Eberhardt (bass) and Pat Skeffington (drums), this 8 song lesson in progression and experimental compositional methods certainly ups the ante for current and future instrumental bands worldwide.
Self-proclaimed as an “Adventure metal band”(like Disneyland/Narnia Metal? – Ed), Scale the Summit, who don’t so much venture into the darker aspects of metal, follow a sort of intuitive wave in their music. Working with 8 string guitars and a six string bass, they are able to keep things low and heavy while also producing a nice full sound in the more introspective and quiet moments Although instrumental bands are not everyone’s cup of tea, their choice to not incorporate vocals allows the intricate guitar work to stay in the fore at all times. This also seems to create a continuous flow within each song since the parts are not clearly outlined by verse/chorus/etc.
Although Carving Desert Canyons’ more uplifting, good vibe sound might not appeal to death metal fans or darker metal fans in general, there is something really refreshing about listening to an album that’s able to distract you from reality for a little while. It’s also great listening to music produced by a newer band that is already so skilled and cohesive. It’ll be very interesting to see how their sound evolves in the years to come.
