CD Review – Them Crooked Vultures
Self-titled
DGC/Interscope

It’s always been about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, but who would have thought that the sex was referring to the sex you have with your wife once a week, (with the lights on if you’re lucky) the drugs referring to the anti-depressants that you’re on, and the rock ‘n’ roll referring to the birth of the most intense and satisfying album of the year.

Josh Homme is the six-foot-five mastermind of Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, the Desert Sessions and Kyuss. Dave Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana and is the long-haired front man of the Foo Fighters (and he is also what you would get if you were to combine Chuck Norris and a drum set) while John Paul Jones is the bass player from the legandary Led Zeppelin. Prepare yourself ladies, because listening to this album might just make your panties catch on fire.

The combination of Josh Homme and Dave Grohl’s alternating vocals on the chorus of “Mind Eraser, No Chaser” makes your ears feel as if they’re being licked by angels – dirty, kinky angels. “Bandoliers”, TVC’s seventh track is the musical equivalent of slicked back hair and sauntering: it leaves the taste of whiskey and cigarettes in your mouth along with an odd feeling in your genitals. The beginning of “Elephants” feels like a jam session performed by a roaming band of minstrel mind readers. “Interludes with Ludes” is an LSD trip down a rabbit hole while “Warsaw Or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up” is a heavy dose of wisdom in a catchy and convenient codeine-coated musical format.

Although this album is an amalgamation of all three Rock God’s input, Josh Homme is clearly still the front man. He’s the single drop of ink that clouds the entire glass of water. He’s the perfume section in the cosmetic department, he’s the cilantro that taints the entire meal. So you have to ask yourself, does it smell nice in there? Do you like your cilantro? Sure tasted good back on Rated R and Songs for the Deaf, smelled lovely on Lullabies to Paralyze and Era Vulgaris but does it work well on Them Crooked Vultures?

Yes. My god. Yes.
