CD Review – Katatonia
Night is the New Day
Peaceville
Katatonia are famous for making singles and EP’s that are as good as their albums or even better. The long anticipated new album Night is the New Day was left without one though, with “Forsaker” released to the wide audience a couple of months ago. The track as usually didn’t sink in right away, but when it did people began craving for the new release. The long wait after the brilliant Tonight’s Decision is finally over and the CD is in stores now.
Katatonia’s policy was to put “Forsaker” as an opening track on the disk and you can imagine setting a standard this high wasn’t very easy to keep. The music they make is genius and the main question is: how to make more of it without regurgitating and sounding similar? They have managed well enough and didn’t shoot themselves in the foot on Night is the New Day, although apart from the mentioned track #1, no big hits are on the release. And it would be safe to say none are needed.
It’s a very atmospheric and heavy album at the same time, rich in instrumental passages and noticeable synths, placing it close to Last Fair Deal Gone Down, where you absolutely must listen to it from beginning to end to perceive it properly. “Idle Blood” will probably remind you of Opeth’s Damnation and yes, it’s that good. There’s a bit more prog in it than usual, it might mean that the band is more ready to experiment, but it doesn’t spoil anything and all adds up to a very strong release, well worth everybody’s attention. The fans are not being mentioned because they are already at the record store.
Katatonia will engulf you in it’s melancholic beauty and unleash even the deepest rooted emotions, walking right through the back door of your subconsciousness. Whether it will be a sad late night train ride through misty fields and forests or a desolate state of mind in a small apartment lost in this world, Katatonia will always be your faithful companion and saviour.
