Live Review – Little Guitar Army with The SickSickSix and Bad One
Thursday, November 5th, 2009
The Princeton Pub – Vancouver, BC.
I defy anyone to out sexify the collective sexual energy down at the Princeton Pub last night as some of what can only be called “the best rock and roll posturing ever” took place as Little Guitar Army broke it down and kicked it out. With friends and neighbours The SickSickSix and Bad One rounding out the evening’s festivities, another notch in the bedpost of good times was had by all.
Show openers The SickSickSix were a mix of Dinosaur Jr., Tad and something you step on in your bare feet, but its ok because it feels and sounds really good when you squish it. Lead singer Sedge was as subtle and laid back as a jungle cat painted Day-Glo orange with a can of marbles tied to it’s tail. The rest of the band looked and sounded great too, especially through the bottom of a never emptied beer glass. Their classic rearrangement of “Dad” by Nomeansno brought a tear to my eye. It was either that or the loss of $50 I bet while playing pool. (Kidding!)
Bad One were up next, rifling through their set like a baggage handler rifling through an unlocked suitcase. Little is known about this band besides the fact that they are a two piece featuring Dude on guitar and Chiquita on drums who share vocal stylings and sweat gland depletion. A bit loose around the edges, a bass player might help round out this band, but I’m only saying that cuz I’m jealous of Dude on guitar’s haircut.
If slow, heartbreaking medleys are your thing then fuck right off cuz headliners Little Guitar Army don’t play that shit! Small guitars, huge noise is what LGA is all about, like a wrecking ball taking down a glass factory next to a burning fireworks warehouse. Basically what you have here is your run of the mill ten piece band consisting of seven sweaty bastards with tiny guitars, a fucking drummer and two singers screaming shit. Playing every droney rock song ever written in the key of E, LGA graced the crowd with riff’s highest honours by playing MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams” and the Blue Oyster Cult classic “Godzilla.”
Obviously excited by the thrill of it all (and by the chance of taking his shirt off in public) co-lead singer The Bertman at one point brought a mike stand down on a glass topped table and shattered that baby like a 40 year old’s dream of dating Demi Moore. Co-lead singer Linda looked great and sounded better and better as the evening progressed. Oh sure, beer was consumed, (and not solely by yours truly) but still, she did look and sound mighty fine.
Straddling the highest rung on the alpha chimp ladder of rock mega awesomeness (mouth breathing included), Little Guitar Army kicked serious behind and should be on any and every self respecting Vancouverite’s “to see” list.
