Rising OxyContin use spells trouble

(The Province) – What do accused Lower Mainland killer Jamie Bacon, actress Lindsay Lohan, Track Palin, son of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and 3/4 of the staff of ABORT Magazine have in common?
Well, it’s the same thing that links convicted local murderer Dennis Karbovanec to rocker Courtney Love and radio personality Rush Limbaugh.
They’re all reported at one time or another to have been hooked on OxyContin, the heroin-like painkiller sweeping the North American drug scene, including the Downtown Eastside.
Now, I’m not referring to the legitimate use of OxyContin (a brand name for the opiate oxycodone), prescribed to relieve pain following surgery or for cancer or other specific medical conditions. I’m talking about its abuse as a recreational drug.
Crack may be king in Vancouver’s most depressed neighbourhood. But those addicted to Oxycontin — a narcotic known as “hillbilly heroin” because of its small-town popularity — can be as desperate for it as any crack addict.
