BRIAN POSEHN: To Release New Album, ‘Fart And Wiener Jokes’, In April

Comedian/actor Brian Posehn will release his brand new stand-up album, Fart And Wiener Jokes, on April 27th via Relapse Records.

Fart And Wiener Jokes, the follow-up to his is Live In: Nerd Rage debut, was recorded at various live gigs across the US during 2009. The record will also include two musical tracks, “More Metal Than You” and a cover of the Kenny Rogers classic “The Gambler”. Posehn recorded these songs with the help of a number of “metal” all-stars including Scott Ian (ANTHRAX), Jamey Jasta (HATEBREED, KINGDOM OF SORROW), Mark Morton (LAMB OF GOD), John Tempesta (EXODUS, THE CULT), Russ Parrish (STEEL PANTHER), and more. Fart And Wiener Jokes is set for an April 27th North American release date, May 3rd internationally, and is available for pre-order at this location.

Additionally, Posehn will be headlining club shows throughout the month of February. He is currently booked for multiple shows in Louisville, KY and Peoria, IL with a special one-off show in Flint, MI. Posehn will also co-headline the 2010 Relapse Records SXSW showcase along with metal legends VOIVOD on March 17th in Austin, TX. A listing of confirmed dates and cities can be found below.

American metal icons Korn have announced they will embark on a cross-Canada tour this spring, beginning March 29 in Vancouver, and ending April 6 in Toronto. One of Americas hottest new hard rock bands, Five Finger Death Punch, will be providing support on all shows, as well as upstarts Stillwell.

Tickets for all dates will be on sale to the general public on Saturday, February 20th. Fans will be able to purchase tickets in presale starting Friday, February 12th.

Korn will be debuting material from their upcoming 9th studio album, tentatively titled Korn III – Remember Who You Are. The new album marks the return of producer Ross Robinson, who worked with Korn on their first two releases, Korn and Life is Peachy.

Five Finger Death Punchs new album War Is the Answer debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts, and their current single Walk Away is proving to be another rock radio hit. This is their first tour of Canada, a much-anticipated arrival to the great North.

Nook e-reader To Hit Stores February 10th

(Reuters) – The Nook e-reader, which Barnes & Noble launched in October and competes with devices such as Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle, had previously only been available for order on the retailer’s website or at in-store kiosks as the No. 1 U.S. bookstore chain struggled to meet what it said in late 2009 was strong demand for the e-reader.

Barnes & Nobles, based in New York, said it was shipping Nook e-readers to the majority of its stores beginning this week, with devices on sale in stores as of February 10.

The Nook’s in store debut, originally expected in December, was delayed after Barnes & Noble sold out of the device before the holidays and was unable to get production sufficiently ramped up.

Rock & Roll’s most famous photographer Neil Zlozower celebrates the release of his fourth book “Six String Heroes” and once again captures the true essence of Rock & Roll from behind the lens. He took the time to speak with ABORT Magazine’s Photo Editor Scott Alexander to discuss his latest book, how it came together, working with digital vs. film and the possibility of a book dedicated to drummers only. Sweet!

Scott Alexander: We’re with the one and only, legendary rock photographer, Neil Zlozower, fresh off the release of his fourth book, ‘Six String Heroes”. How are you Neil?

Neil Zlozower: Good you’re going to have to talk a little louder, I’m a little deaf! I am the loudest voice in Rock and Roll, you wont have a problem hearing me, I guarantee it. (laughs)

ABORT: (Laughs) Perfect, then we will get right into it, after your first three books, what made you decide to dedicate the pages of your fourth to the guitar? Was there a moment you were looking through your archives of negatives, and just knew ‘Six String heroes’ was next?

NZ: I was sitting here one day with my buddy Steve Vai, and I was showing him of my photos for the “Fuck You” book, and he looked at me, and asks, “why don’t you do a guitar book?” At first I was against it, I don’t want to do you know: Here is Pete Townsend, Steve Vai, here is Zakk Wylde…” Steve goes, Neil, why don’t you pick out 10 or so guitarists that you worked closely with over the years, Eddie Van Halen, me, Satriani and you could focus the book on those guys, and still have a lot of stuff. I liked that idea; I told Steve I would do the book under one condition. I would do the book if he wrote the forward, and he agreed.

We ran the idea past my publisher, Chronicle Books, and they liked the idea. Then, it sort of changed to what I didn’t want in the beginning, to what I didn’t want. We didn’t go into the ten guitarists; it went into a bit of everything. If you like Bonnie Raitt, and you don’t like Slash or Zakk Wylde, you’re not going to buy the book. We tried to put a little of everybody, from Johnny Watson, to B.B. King, and people like that. There are a few people that aren’t in the book that I would have loved to have in there, but didn’t have room for. There are a ton of great players out there, and I have photos of a lot, but there are only so many pages to the book. There were certain people I wanted in the book that got vetoed out by the two other people who had a say in who went in there. There are a few people I personally don’t want in the book, but with a three-person decision, you have to give and take a little.

(I want to know who the “few people” are – Ed)

ABORT: With all these other people you wanted in there, but weren’t able to, it almost leaves you open for a second volume of Six String Heroes?

NZ: I don’t know how I am going to top this one. (laughs) I just had my friend Erik Turner from Warrant call and thank me for putting him in the book. He had been a fan of my photos from back in the Creem and Circus, seeing my name under the photos of his heroes.

ABORT: Are we going to see any new books focusing on other parts of ‘The Band’ Singers, Bassists, Drummers?

NZ: You know, I was thinking about a drummer book, but I don’t know. Thank god, I don’t know how many drummers can actually read, I think they are capable of looking at pictures, but drummers are my favorite people in the world to pick on, but I have another book in progress now, It wont be out for another year or so, and I’m not going to spoil the cake and tell you what it is right now, but I like doing these books. I have been shooting for 41 years, a lot of the work is already done, now its just a matter of me and my art director putting together this new book featuring one guitarist who basically set the standards for all the guitarists this day and age, but he is going to be on board with us to. I’m sure you can guess who it is.

ABORT: I can think of a few people who it might be. Do you view rock photography as an ‘old boys club’ or do you welcome the new generations of photographers who find themselves in front of their favorite bands in “The pit”?

NZ: There are people like me, dinosaurs like me, they’re a thing of the past. Most of the people now, its’ all digital, I know people these days who don’t even know how to use a light meter! I’m not necessarily talking about live photography, but they will go into the studio, take a shot at 1/125 at F11, and they will take a shot, they’ll go wow, this is way too bright and step it down to F16 or F22. They don’t even know how to use a meter to get it right the first time. I grew up in the day, when it’s all film, manual focus, manual everything, and you had to think to get a great photo. Back then when you made a great photo, you SHOT a great photo. Now, there are no more shooting great photos, what you do now is “create an image”, its amazing how many photos where they take heads from different frames, go in and remove bags, and whatever they got to do. I mean, I’m not a fix it in the mix type of guy. I always try and start out with the very best possible photo that I can, and take it from there. Whereas, people these days, people just fix shiny faces, triple chins, and stuff like that in Photoshop. That isn’t the way I like to work when I get hired for jobs, you know?

Live Review – Arch Enemy w/ Exodus, Arsis and Mutiny Within

Finally a killer metal show in Vancouver on a Friday night! Just when you thought weekend metal shows was a thing of the past, Arch Enemy stop by the host city of the 2010 Olympics, one week before the games, to stir shit up at the sold-out Commodore Ballroom. It’s no surprise this show sold-out; with the combination of two highly-influential, legendary bands– Arch Enemy and Exodus- sharing the stage on a Friday night for a city always hungry for metal, what else can you expect.

Mutiny Within broke the ice with a short but strong set. While their brand of prog metal seemed slightly out of place with this line-up, they got an overall good reception from the crowd. Despite a lighter sound then the other bands –due in large part to vocalist Chris Clancy’s predominantly clean vocal style and their strong power metal influence- their intense, right-on-point stage presence and tight musicianship made them a captivating act to watch.

Up next, Virginia-based Arsis set the tone for the rest of the night with their wicked, fast-paced death/thrash metal style. They’re a great choice for this line-up as their crossover sound is a perfect synthesis for the distinct styles of Exodus and Arch Enemy. Despite having had to cancel their scheduled tour with Carcass last year due to personal issues and surviving the looming possibility of a break-up, Arsis made it through and are back on track, anticipating the release of their next album Starve for the Devil February 9th, 2010.

Exodus, as always tore the roof off the place with the shameless Rob Duke leading them through classics like “Piranha,” “A Lesson in Violence” and “Bonded by Blood.” Begging the crowd to show their tits, there were 3 takers in a sea of hundreds, followed by countless cameras trying to get a shot and rubberneckers at all corners of the venue, trying to get a peek; never a dull moment with Exodus. Though the band/crowd interplay wasn’t quite as rabid as their show at the Vogue with Kreator last April, this seems to have much more to do with the barricade at the front of the stage at the Commodore (and the lack thereof at the Vogue) rather than the band’s performance or the crowd’s interest. Keep posted for news on their upcoming album due to be released this April.

Arch Enemy greeted the sold-out Vancouver crowd with “Immortal” from 1999’s Burning Bridges. As always, they dipped into a bit of everything from their discography, including many early tracks, due in large part to last year’s release of The Root of All Evil which featured Angela Gossow’s vocals on tracks previously recorded with original vocalist Johan Liiva. Despite Exodus’ merciless set, Arch Enemy worked the crowd into a frenzy with favorites such as “Ravenous”, “My Apocalypse”, “We Will Rise” and “Dead Eyes See No Future.”

It’s great to see one woman, on stage, fully-clothed, able to get the undivided attention of 1000 people. Though small in stature, Angela had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand with a powerful stage presence and demonic vocal style. The Ammott brothers of course dominated as well –their epic solos and fast-as-fuck shredding almost perfectly replicating their studio recordings. If you haven’t’ been to an Arch Enemy show yet, you owe it to yourself to check it out. While these days there are quite a few female-fronted metal bands, Arch Enemy is one of a handful that rely on musical skill and charisma over T and A.

Vancouver’s fans of underground Hip Hop eccentricity were treated to a rare exhibit of skills and inspiration when Anticon’s Dosh and Rhymesayers’ prodigies Eyedea and Abilities dropped by the ever plush Biltmore Cabaret for an evening of well-intentioned mayhem.

After a tear-the-roof-off set with DJ Sage on the ones and twos, the ever eclectic Dosh took the stage to provide an aural canvas of delight. Featuring the improvisational talents of Martin Dosh and Mike Lewis the unit combines looped keys and sax with live percussion to great effect, warming the crowd up nicely for the ragged joys to follow.

After securing their rep on the battle circuit MC Eyedeas and DJ Abilities have gone on to great success as one of the most on point experimental Hip Hop duos around. Their fuzzed out, bass heavy sound had the crowd enthralled as they tore through a set of classics from “First Born” and the more far out tracks from their latest “By The Throat”. Eyedea’s dizzying cadences were well complemented by Abilities unearthly skills on the decks, and the results were electrifying. Rarely do artists of this caliber display such crowd control skills, and the dynamic duo had the crowd literally eating out of the palm of their hands.

Again, much respect to the Biltmore for being one of the dopest venues in town, and for consistently bringing in great acts and keeping a chill vibe overall. Spring is in the air, and Hip Hop is bursting out everywhere.

The Magic in my Heart is Dead

The West Coast aggrotech/electro-industrial gem, or rather module, God Module (pun intended) are getting everybody prepared for the new album with The Magic in my Heart is Dead. The EP has four new songs and some great remixes all in the vein of their own brandy-trendy “Spooky Dance Music”. While the idea and the concept do sound a bit lame, the music and everything else isn’t. God Module are as usually striking hard, so be prepared.

The playful artwork feels a bit scary and clinically insane. When you’re done with it check if it’s not “A Minute to Midnight” by chance. If it isn’t it will feel like it, because the song pretty much captures the moment. “Art’s” ambivalent harsh and gentle nature is probably best described by the remixes. Ashbury Heights turned it into and 80’s new wave disco hit (it’s so simplistic and completely non-serious that it’s actually good), while Aesthetic Perfection kept it pure to the ebm tradition. Go figure, but definitely a hit, the effect complete only after you hear the lyrics.

Project Pitchfork’s choice for remixes went to “Skeptical”, and it literally could be guessed while listening to the original track. The last “new” song isn’t really new, it’s a cover of Gary Numan’s “Me! I Disconnect From You”. To be perfectly subjective, there’s nothing objectively good about it, just a cover. But apart from it the EP definitely lives up to it’s title. Although there’s a good chance the magic will resurrect when we hear the new album, because that’s were usually large-caliber sorcery comes in.

Warner Bros Records has announced the release of breakthrough UK band biffy clyro’s new album Only Revolutions. The follow up to 2007’s Puzzle, Only Revolutions will be available exclusively on iTunes beginning March 9, 2010.

Produced by Garth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers) and mixed by Andy Wallace (Coldplay, Nirvana, Faith No More), the fifth release from the Scottish trio also features the orchestration of multi Grammy-winning composer David Campbell. Only Revolutions came out in the UK November 9, 2009 to chart success and critical acclaim. It is already certified gold in the UK, and the Sunday Times, Kerrang and Q each gave it four stars, with The Guardian declaring, “ their songs pack a punch, but are full of light, shade and sophistication.” The first UK single off the album, “Mountains” is a top 5 radio hit that has sold over 100,000 copies, and their current UK single, “Many of Horror” is rapidly climbing the charts: it is #6 on the national airplay chart. “Mountains” will impact at US radio on February 9, 2010.

To support the release, biffy clyro will head out with Manchester Orchestra on a nationwide US tour. The month-long string of dates kicks off March 6th in Tempe, AZ and runs through April 9th in Columbia, SC. The tour comes on the heels of a successful UK headlining tour, including a sold out performance at London’s Brixton Academy.

Suicidal Tendencies’ Live at Olympic Auditorium is the first-ever DVD released by the band. Recorded in 2005, this DVD’s been a long time coming. Without any bonus features to act as filler, all the pressure is put on the live performance to carry the release. This one stands on its own offering a fitting, no-bullshit glimpse at why many fans have stuck around and stayed true despite various changes in style since the band’s inception. Luckily, original member Mike Muir (vocals) put on a killer, high-energy show despite persistent back issues which manifested in partial paralysis the day of the show. The fact that Muir was still able to do what he does –running around the stage, pushing the pace for over an hour- without letting on that he was having severe medical problems, is a testament to his drive and determination; essentially what’s been keeping the band going on and off for almost 30 years now.

The set begins with “I Shot Reagan” (AKA “I Shot the Devil”) and includes many other early tracks such as “Institutionalized,” “Subliminal”, “I Saw Your Mommy” and “War Inside my Head.” The line-up featuring Mike Clark (rhythm guitar), Dean Pleasants (lead guitar), Steve Brunner (Bass) and Ron Brunner (drums) (who was since replaced by Eric Moore) does a great job of churning out these old tunes, adding their own touch in certain spots and helping Muir keep the energy going. What’s interesting about the way the performance is shot is the “amateur” quality. While the camera work is good, there’s an overall “real” perspective created which gives the impression that it was shot by hand-held cameras. Again this adds to the no-frills aspect of the DVD and gives the feeling that we are seeing it as it was, not an over-produced, cleaned up version.

European fans will get a chance to see Suicidal in all their glory during their European tour with Mike Muir’s other project Infectious Grooves this March.

Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live, and the distinction between “Rap Music” and Hip Hop Culture is becoming as great a divide as it was in the era of Public Enemy and MC Hammer, unless by “Hip Hop”, one automatically imagines a world of rampant materialism, shallow lyrical retardation, and self-congratulatory fakeness. It’s reputation as the most utterly bogus club in Vancouver sealed by the evening’s sausage fest, “Boss” nightclub was host to the bastard children of “C.R.E.A.M.” and their culture of consumption for an evening of scenesters and wannabes.

Global Syndicate’s prepackaged East Van hustler image was well received by a crowd of meatheads and hoochies who bought into the hype without complaint, forfeiting their minds and asses to a set of weak keyboard beats and Dipset rejects. If this is what is considered “that raw Hip Hop”, as they announced themselves to be, it’s clear that these 90’s babies have never heard of Onyx, Gravediggaz or Cypress Hill. Has Hip Hop really become so shallow that what was once the soundtrack of the oppressed has come to echo the message of the oppressor? For a moment the slaves were freed, and then they just chose to put the chains back on themselves?!

When the Chef Raekwon finally took the stage, the difference between the local amateurs (complete with mic feedback…) and a true and living master was as clear as the difference between OG Kush and Super Wizard Smoke. Rae’s delivery was crystal, his energy focused and his vibe elevated. With practiced skill, he literally had the crowd in the palm of his hand, chanting along to classic tracks like “Ice Cream” and the better part of “OBFCL”. Despite the hypeness, one literally had to laugh out loud when he asked all the “real niggas in the house” to make some noise, and fans of all complexions hollered in unison.

Ultimately, does a great set justify a terrible venue and an abysmal vibe? Only if you’re a journalist and get in free. Costing fifty bones at the door, one should expect at least a cordial environment and half decent sound system, and to be treated like a paying customer and not just another cow for the slaughter. Isn’t Hip Hop supposed to help diffuse feelings of aggression and violence, not make you want to kill someone before you get in the door?

(NY Times) – In this urban oasis widely considered one of the most livable places in the world, the Downtown Eastside is about 15 square blocks of something else.

Unlike some Olympic host cities, Vancouver has not moved out its poor. Some find refuge at a church.

At the corner of Main and Hastings, residents of the poorest postal code in Canada passed a recent Tuesday afternoon. One man lighted a crack pipe, inhaling deeply. Another urinated on a wall. Another burned a book of matches, muttering at the flame. Two men started fighting. One brandished a bicycle seat, the other a salad that spilled onto the sidewalk.

“All that over drugs,” a passer-by said. “Welcome to the Downtown Eastside.”

That scene unfolded five blocks from the site of the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics, scheduled for next Friday, and a five-minute drive from the athletes’ village.

By bidding for the Olympics, Vancouver invited the world to visit. Now city officials are trying to redirect the international news media spotlight from this blighted neighborhood in the shadows of the picturesque North Shore Mountains.

News accounts throughout the world have zeroed in on the striking juxtaposition of the Downtown Eastside with the Winter Games.

“North America’s festering sore of what do with its homeless and disenfranchised is crystallized in a few short blocks,” The Sunday Times of Australia wrote. The Daily News of Egypt wrote, “Just be careful not to stray too far south of Gastown into the city’s notoriously squalid and poverty-stricken notorious Downtown Eastside, where drugs and prostitution are rampant.”

Depp gets deep with Keef: Keith Richards Doc on the way

(Variety) – Johnny Depp will direct a documentary on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, who served as an inspiration for Depp’s Jack Sparrow character in “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

A rep for Depp confirmed a recent report in the Serbian magazine Politika, in which he said he would begin work on the project next week. Depp and Richards have been friends for more than a decade. The guitar player also played Depp’s father in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

Depp last directed 1997’s “The Brave,” starring Marlon Brando. He’ll be seen next in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

Richards agreed in 2007 to pen an autobiography to be published by Little, Brown & Co. in the U.S. and Weidenfeld & Nicolson in Britain in the fall of this year.

On Saturday, February 6th at 7pm, NYC’s Last Rites Gallery will open two solo exhibitions of new work from artists Fred Harper and Nick Baxter. For years Fred Harper has been a fanboy favorite for his artwork on such well known comic books as Conan, Doctor Strange and of course Spider-Man!

At the same time, in an industry not all-together disconnected from the comic book world, Nick Baxter has become globally sought after by tattoo lovers of all kinds for his own unique brand of tattooing, employing fantastical imagery and a bright, almost neon-like color palette. What many people do not know about these two incredibly talented artists, is that while the world has watched them sling ink on paper and skin over the past several years, the two have individually been devoting every free moment they have on painting.

Harper’s large, loose, darkly humorous depictions of female cyborgs and the like have a sickly sweet quality that both attack and embrace the viewer at the same time. Baxter, on the other hand, works on small surfaces in tight, intricate detail, made up of wet skin, gleaming blood and various sharp objects throughout. Although there styles are vastly different, they share the same intense desire to show the fine art world what they can do when they’re not rocking their respective industries.

When you have 24 years of experience under your belt, you clearly know what you are doing. Belgian dark electro activist Johan Van Roy, the man behind Suicide Commando, is ready to command your damnation as early in the year as possible with his new full-length album, Implements of Hell. As one of the originators of the genre, he’s still on the forefront and the new release deserves careful attention, as always.

Since Johan knows what he is doing, the main question is why does Suicide Commando sound different? Not bad, but different. The distinct trademark sound familiar from Bind, Torture, Kill is gone, replaced by a more not-so-disctinct dark electro/electro industrial one, complete with a stronger concept throughout the album. Not as if it comes unexpected, considering the teaser Die, Motherfucker, Die, which came out last year.

Well, if you’re that conservative, then you might be a bit disappointed. Go buy yourself a pack of tissue, while we thoroughly enjoy tracks like “Death Cures All Pain”, simple but striking artwork and the atmosphere of darkness and evil, that creeps and is ready to jump and devour you. Best digested as a concept album, from beginning to end, the album still has some tracks that stand out, e.g. “God is in the Rain”, where Dr. Commando treats us with a 90’s cyber embrace, merged with more than modern beat.

Bonus points go to “Severed Head”, where the sample is absolutely brilliant, the matter of fact tone of the narrator is the doctor’s recipe. Or is it commandante’s?

R&B singer Jill Scott sued by record label

(Reuters) – The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by L.A.-based Hidden Beach Records, claims that the label and its founder, Steve McKeever, helped launch Scott’s career and nurtured her into a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter but was unceremoniously dumped in October after a 10-plus year relationship.

“Hidden Beach is shocked by her decision not only because Scott has apparently chosen to leave the Hidden Beach family,” the complaint reads, “but also because Scott is contractually required to deliver three more albums to Hidden Beach.”

The complaint alleges causes of action for breach of contract and damages owed under a section of California’s Labor Code sometimes known as the “De Havilland Law.” Named after actress Olivia De Havilland’s successful fight in the ’40s against long-term studio deals, it provides that talent cannot be bound by personal services contracts for longer than seven years.

Hidden Beach isn’t disputing that Scott’s deal violated the seven-year rule but the law carves out a requirement that certain recording artists who wish to terminate their lengthy deals must reimburse their labels in the amount the labels would have received under the terms of the contracts.

Since breaking onto the scene with the double-platinum selling “Who Is Jill Scott?” album in 2000, Scott’s studio albums (and live albums) have generated millions in revenue. So while Hidden Beach’s alleged damages are unspecified in the complaint, under California law they could total several million dollars.

Dear Inter-web, fans, friends and JUX family,

People keep asking me what’s up with JUX. There’s been some talk, there have been some rumors. Some half true, some way off. Reports of our demise have been mildly exaggerated. Here’s what it really all boils down to: (read on)

This year, a decade after starting DEF JUX and after overseeing the releases of some incredible albums including the forthcoming release of my dear late and great friend Camu Tao’s brilliant “KING OF HEARTS” LP, I’m stepping away from my duties as artistic director for the label to concentrate on what I love most: being a producer and an artist full time. This is something I’ve been contemplating for a few years now, and can’t think of a better time or, with the eventual release of Camu’s record, a more poetic way to transition into a new direction.

This means change for JUX. Of course we’ll still have our website, we will still sell our catalog, merch and more as well as bring you news and updates on all our projects and artists. We will be releasing “KING OF HEARTS”, a DEF JUX remix compilation, a 10 year anniversary retrospective and some other goodies. But then as a traditional record label DEF JUX will effectively be put on hiatus. We are not closing, but we are changing. The process is already underway, and the last several months (for those wondering what the hell we’ve been up to) have been spent dealing with the technical aspects of wrapping up the label in it’s current form and re-imagining our collective and individual futures.

In 2000 starting a traditional record label made a lot of sense. But now, in 2010, less so and I find myself yearning for something else to put my energy into. I also see newer, smarter, more interesting things on the horizon for the way art and commerce intersect, and as an artist and an entrepreneur, I’m eager to see them unfold. The evolution of this industry is, in my opinion, exciting, inevitable and it would be nice to see the DEFINITIVE JUX brand be a part of it. In other words, maybe we can turn this hoopty in to a hovercraft.

All business aside, and regardless of what form JUX may inevitably take, my focus for the immediate future is going to be back-to-basics. The fun stuff: sitting in the studio and immersing myself in music, performing it for for my fans when the time comes and whatever (or wherever) else might be out there creatively for me. Thats how it all started and that’s how the next phase will begin. The days of me dedicating the majority of my time and energy into providing JUX with a constant stream of physical releases from multiple artists are on hold for the time being. My heart (and what little common sense I possess) is telling me to simplify my focus and it has always been my policy to listen to my heart.

FISHBONE first gained attention in the mid-eighties with their live concerts, earning a reputation as one of the most diverse bands in the alternative rock genre. Their unique stew of different styles, mixed with hectic energy and pounding rhythms, was a huge influence on the funk/rock/new wave/metal/rap hybrid that would become popular in the 1990s. The base of Third Wave Ska, of course, having been largely defined by three bands: L.A.’s Fishbone, N.Y.C.’s The Toasters, and Hollywood’s The Untouchables. Fishbone, the junkyard ska, punk, funk, metal outfit, got its start at Chinatown’s Madame Wong’s in the summer of ‘79. As singer Angelo Moore explains:

“I lived in the Valley and bussed to L.A. after school. It was on the bus that Walt let me listen to The Selecter. I said what are they playing? He said they’re playin’ the ska. I said fuck, yeah. I’ve been gettin’ down and gettin’ funky with it ever since.”

Outside of the immense talent and musical diversity, the band’s influence on pop-culture permeates to this day as some music icons and historians even credit frenetic frontman Angelo Moore as one of the first performers to “stage dive” and “crowd surf” during legendary performances in early eighties garage punk clubs, as the band and their chaotic and colorful energy would incite some of the very first crowd surfing episodes in LA clubs, antics which have since become embedded as a staple of punk rock subculture.

FISHBONE’s legacy as one of the best live bands in rock n’ roll history is undeniable; their influence on some of the biggest bands in contemporary music such as No Doubt, Sublime, Jane’s Addiction and The Red Hot Chili Peppers is a well-documented fact. Through 25 groundbreaking years of music history, this the first official live DVD of the bands career, inevitably raises the questions: what went wrong that we had to wait a good 20 years before this finally happened when FISHBONE has always been labeled as the ultimate live act whose records never really matched their stage energy? And isn’t it too late now that the glorious lineup of the early 90s has mostly disbanded and the two remaining original members, Angelo Moore and Norwood Fisher are well into their 40s? Is this live concert film still relevant? Of course, the FISHBONE of 2009 is no longer the same as in 1991, but it has matured and has remained fresh, without diluting the sound, energy, or musical relevancy. To the fans left behind in the mid 90s, this live concert film is a great testimony that not only is FISHBONE not dead, but it’s still as red hot as ever. For those who have stuck with the band and all the musical paths they followed in the last 25 years, this live video is a must. The whole audio mix is perfect, well balanced without being too clean. This is a live recording of FISHBONE without nets. The editing is nervous and generous. It makes you feel right in the center of the Rock School Barbey in Bordeaux, France, where it was shot in April 2008. The video is true to the general mayhem that Fishbone produces on and off stage.

The song selection is a best of piece spanning FISHBONE’s career, and all the songs here deserve on their own right their presence on the video. The performance showcases the bands ability to STILL offer their fans an incredible, frenzied, high energy, fan engaging performance led by who Gwen Stefani of No Doubt credits as “one of the greatest front men of all time,” Angelo Moore, who is still stage diving and crowd surfing like it was 1985! With this, only one small spoiler: the Flamenco-Punk “Servitude” finale is incredible!

Over 100 Hip-Hop legends teach the art form of MCing in a new book recently released by Chicago Review Press. “How to Rap: The Art & Science of the Hip-Hop MC” guides the reader through the science of rap in the words of the artists, giving an inside look behind their creative processes and techniques.

R.I.P. ‘Jaws’ producer David Brown dies aged 93

(BBC) – David Brown, the producer behind hit films including Jaws and The Sting, has died at the age of 93. Brown brought Elvis to the small screen for the first time in Love Me Tender, before taking up a job at Fox. He later set up his own company with Richard Zanuck, producing both Jaws and The Sting, starring Paul Newman – which won an Oscar for best film in 1973.

In later life, he was behind movies such as Driving Miss Daisy, Chocolat and Angela’s Ashes.

‘American Psycho’ musical takes shape

(Variety) – The brewing tuner adaptation of “American Psycho” has found its creative team, with Duncan Sheik penning music and lyrics and scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing the book.

Based on the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel that centers on a Wall Street banker who’s also a serial killer, “American Psycho” incorporates multiple references to the popular music of the 1980s, the era in which the story is set. Producers have said they expect the original score to share that ’80s flavor.

Sheik nabbed a 2007 Tony as the composer of “Spring Awakening.” He also is at work on legit projects including “Nero” and “Whisper House,” which recently opened at the Old Globe in San Diego.

Aguirre-Sacasa, a writer on HBO skein “Big Love,” has penned plays including “Based on a Totally True Story,” “Good Boys and True” and “Dark Matters.”

“Psycho” was previously adapted into a 2000 Lionsgate pic toplined by Christian Bale.

There was a word that was buzzing around the packed house at the Rickshaw Theatre in the heart of Vancouver’s scenic Downtown Eastside, sometimes in the form of regular conversation and more often than not in the form of guttural howlings: Korpiklaani.

By the time the Finnish sextet took to the stage the crowd had been whipped into a state of near-frenzy and they voiced their impatience to see the folk metal maniacs with a monstrous roar. But of course the boys from Korpiklaani weren’t the only ones ripping it up. The night started out with local act Trollband kicking things into gear. The keyboard-driven folk metal five-piece pumped out some tight, headbangin’ grooves that had the crowd all jacked up and pumping their fists in the air. On stage they projected an air of confidence and a casual nature with the exception of bassist/vocalist Sam Levitt, who seemed a man on fire, his extreme level of psychedness exuding from every bang of his head.

Up next was White Wizzard, whose old school Dio/Maiden-style rockin’ evoked images of red Trans Ams, old-style pilsner, and the bitchinest of mullets. With lead singer Wyatt “Screamin’ Demon” Anderson patrolling the stage, the guys from Los Angeles, California seemed to yell “party, motherfucker!” with every bang of the drum, every stroke of the guitar, every vocal note hit with bang-on, dope-ass versions of songs like “Out Of Control” and “High Speed GTO”

Then it was time for the pirate-metal trio that is Swashbuckle to board the stage for some serious thrash shreddage. With their costumes and inflatable palm tree the New Jersey-based act hammed it up playing “I’m On A Boat” as they got on stage as well as doing a metal version of the Spongebob Squarepants theme and then proved themselves with a terrific performance, their blazing guitars, thundering drums, and death metal vocals screeching their way through every audience member’s eardrums.

After Swashbuckle finished it was Tyr that took the stage and delivered a jolt of progressive Viking metal. Clad in armour which they eventually had to shed halfway through the set because they were too hot from rocking so hard, the Runavik, Faroe Islands-based foursome were electrifying, bounding across the stage as they performed rousing versions of songs such as “By the Sword In My Hand” and “Hail To The Hammer”, during the latter of which the members of White Wizzard mooned the crowd with the name of the song written on their butt-cheeks. Finally, with the crowd screaming in anticipation, Korpiklaani came out to a wall of roaring fans with their fists in the air and proceeded to just own the place. Their entire performance was like a big party, as members of all the other bands all came out and drank and ate and rabbleroused, with the members of Tyr even bringing a couch onto the stage so they could drink their beers comfortably. From their bombastic, singalong-style version of “Beer Beer” to their forceful rendition of “Wooden Pints”, the entire set was like one big free-for-all party, with every member of every band seeming like they were just having a blast, and undoubtedly the party raged until the early morn’.

The whole night can really be summed up with that one word: party. Every band seemed to just love being there. You could tell they loved to drink beer, loved to rock out, loved to have a good time and loved to play metal.

Do not be deceived by the melodic, instrumental opening track Nametag. It may be mesmerizing, it may be beautiful, it may be reminiscent of some seasonal Soundgarden loveliness that brings you back to that nice warm place. But it is only about a minute long, and Rosemary’s Abortion awaits you eagerly in the real world of Sabatini. Large, huge, big, gigantic, riff-driven doom incites all the sincerest sludgy stoners into fits of screaming in a musical hell. Multiple voices scream over one another, all of them vying for top spot in the lung bursting Olympiad of agony. Robots enters with the same energy, just a bit more maniacal, and panned dueling guitars give you a sonic picture of the droid battle occurring in this song.

Stick around awhile and witness the robot war as it gives away lustily to glorious robot sex in Auto-Erography. Fire and Flood is divided by the “and”. It is two halves of one whole, two different energies. The first is a fiery swath of deliciously nonsensical drum fills, and the second is a slowly spreading current of subtly ebbing fullness, vivid for those who can employ their imaginations. Thematically, these gents proclaim to be the harbingers of human uselessness and confusion. As far as I am concerned, they can continue to proclaim that unto the ends of the earth, and unto the ends of the universe for that matter.

I can’t think of another collection of music that characterizes more accurately the disjointed awkwardness I feel as a human being, doomed and dismal in the scope of the cosmos. But if you want to keep out of the realm of the analytical and morose, just shut your eyes and let this record take you wherever. Foreign Journalists get “Sugar-coated” Info Centre regarding Vancouver’s DTES

(Vancouver Sun) – With an expected 10,000 journalists arriving in B.C. to cover the Olympics, the provincial government and Vancouver city hall have created an information centre with lots of fact sheets and story ideas about the Downtown Eastside.

Located in the new Woodward’s development, “Downtown Eastside Connect” will open today and offer information about the city’s oldest and poorest neighbourhood.

“Someone can write a negative story by taking a picture of someone in a doorway, but we have some things to celebrate,” Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman said Friday.

The centre, which has a budget of about $150,000, is full of details about social housing, outreach programs and support services. Coleman said he hopes reporters will take away the message that B.C. “is facing the issue [of homelessness] head-on,” and is focusing on integrating services to try to keep people off the streets.

About 35 non-profit organizations that do important work in the community – such as initiatives involving clothing, meals, addictions treatment and harm reduction – will have representatives at the centre.

A so-called “living library,” operated by the non-profit agency Atira, offers 30-minute appointments with Downtown Eastside residents and workers, who will tell their stories about the neighbourhood. However, the Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP) and a half dozen other community groups are planning a protest outside the office doors today, dismissing the centre as a “propaganda kiosk.”

“This is government spin-doctoring,” said CCAP’s Wendy Pedersen.

The community groups are planning to give speeches and hand out pamphlets outlining “the facts that this propaganda is keeping from the Olympics’ foreign media.”

SLAYER, MEGADETH, TESTAMENT ANNOUNCE NEW DATES FOR THE “AMERICAN CARNAGE” NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

Slayer and Megadeth are thrilled to announce the new, confirmed routing for the American Carnage North American Tour, which will commence with the rescheduled Canadian Carnage East dates in Quebec City on Friday, July 23. Slayer will then head to Europe for a run of festival dates, returning to kick off the American Carnage leg in Albany, NY on August 11. American Carnage will play 26 dates across the United States and Eastern Canada up to the Labor Day weekend, ending in Portland, OR on September 4. Testament will be Special Guest on all shows. Tickets purchased for the American Carnage shows when they first went on sale late last year will be honored for these rescheduled dates.

Due to venue availability and other conflicts, the shows originally scheduled in El Paso, Houston, Nashville, Duluth, and Louisville cannot be rescheduled at this time, and ticket holders may obtain refunds at point of purchase. The American Carnage Tour, originally scheduled to take place in January and February, had to be put on hold due to Slayer’s vocalist/bassist, Tom Araya’s ongoing, minimally-invasive treatments for what was diagnosed as a Cervical Radiculopathy, an occupational hazard for the rocker who is known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing. Right after the first of the year, Araya made the difficult decision to undergo a surgical procedure, called an Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion, a relatively routine practice with an excellent recovery rate. That surgery took place early last week.”The doctors said that Tom’s surgery went very smoothly and was a resounding success,” said Rick Sales, long-time Slayer manager. “He’s home now, doing really well, and he said the numbness in his fingers had already diminished considerably.”

Shortly after the surgery, Slayer’s Kerry King received a text from Tom: “Awake and feeling good, actually whatever he did, it feels better.”

The American Carnage Tour will mark the first time that Slayer, Megadeth and Testament will have toured the U.S. together since 1991’s epic “Clash of the Titans” tour, making this truly a “must-see” event.

Slayer recently announced the rescheduling of its headline tour in the UK and Europe, and Megadeth and Testament are currently on tour together playing U.S. cities that will not be on the American Carnage itinerary.

Both Megadeth and Slayer will hit the road on July 23 in support of their most recent albums: Megadeth’s 2009 album, ENDGAME, and Slayer’s World Painted Blood, the band’s 10th studio venture, which hit stores November 3, 2009. Testament’s The Formation of Damnation: Special Tour Edition, will be released on February 23, 2010 with special unreleased bonus tracks.

Slayer and Megadeth have already massacred territories together outside of the U.S., first with four explosive dates in June 2009 across Western Canada – “Canadian Carnage” – the first time the bands had toured together anywhere in 18 years – and then six co-headlining “Carnage” dates in Australia followed last October.

(UPI) – Connecticut state police allege actor Elmore “Rip” Torn was intoxicated when he broke into a bank in Salisbury carrying a loaded revolver.

The Torrington (Conn.) Register Citizen said Saturday that Torn, 78, set off an alarm at a Litchfield Bancorp building when he allegedly forced entry into the site through a back window Friday night.

Police said in a release that officers responding to the alarm allegedly found Torn intoxicated and carrying a loaded revolver.

(FolioMag) – In the weeks leading up to Apple’s launch of its tablet device Wednesday, a strange fairy tale started to gain currency. It cast the publishing business as a hapless Sleeping Beauty—and Apple CEO Steve Jobs as a Prince Charming who’d kiss the industry out of its slumber with a combination of hardware, software, and services that would instantly restore consumers’ willingness to pay for quality content.

As I sat in the audience at the event, I slowly figured out that it wouldn’t provide a ready-made happy ending for magazine publishers. Apple did reveal that the gizmo includes an e-book reader, iBooks—but as the name suggests, that software is meant for books, not periodicals. It also let the New York Times show off a handsome app for reading that paper. But the only magazine that came up during the event was Time—and that was when Jobs showed how good its Web site looked in the iPad’s Safari browser. It mostly served as a reminder that it’s not entirely clear why many consumers would choose to pay for digital magazines when the same content is available on the Web for free.

Despite everything, the great unveiling left me feeling optimistic about the the iPad’s impact on magazine publishing, as did the hands-on experience I got with a unit after the presentation. The PC has never been a very satisfactory device for reading magazine-style content—even the landscape orientation of desktop and laptop displays is all wrong. And for all the things that are right about the Kindle and its competitors, their sluggish monochrome E-Ink screens are a massive compromise that leaves vibrant print (and online) content feeling lifeless.

Anti-Olympic Protesters Get Their Game on

(Vancouver Sun) – Anarchist punk ruled on the night of Jan. 22 at Victory Square, in the heart of the Olympic city. More than 200 anti-2010 protesters, some carrying black flags and burning torches, gathered for what had all the hallmarks of a dress rehearsal for the street protests that could erupt during the Winter Games just over two weeks away.

The crowd, mostly young, some wearing bandannas over their faces, had come to march against the “police repression” of anti-Olympic activism. A portable audio system jacked up the energy level with the opening chords of the Rolling Stones’ Street Fighting Man. “Everywhere I hear the sound of marching, charging feet, boy,” howled Mick Jagger.

A few protesters with megaphones screamed slogans, often laced with obscenity, at startled motorists: “No 2010!” and “Did You Vote For Gordon Campbell?”

The small but angry far-left demo recalled the much larger anti-globalization demonstrations of a decade ago: the APEC protest and the Riot at the Hyatt in Vancouver, the epic Battle in Seattle against the World Trade Organization and the violent clash between demonstrators at the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City.

As one of the most controversial black metal bands in the scene, Mayhem is a household name for many metal heads; fans and non-fans alike. Their story has been told around the world for almost 2 decades; most notably through documentaries such as Lords of Chaos (book- 1998/2003), Cult of Aggression (2004), Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey (2005), and Until the Light Takes Us (2010). With the imminent release of Lords of Chaos- The Movie (set for release later this year), there is certainly still much interest in the Mayhem story specifically and Black Metal history in general.

What makes the documentary included in the Pure Fucking Mayhem CD/DVD set different from many of the others listed above is that the story is told directly by current and former Mayhem members including Necrobutcher (bass), Attila (vocals) and Manheim (ex-drums). This is actually a follow-up to Cult of Aggression, also directed by Stefan Rydehed. What’s questionable with this one is, like Cult of Aggression, the glaring absence of ex-bassist Varg Vikernes. While Vikernes was not a member of Mayhem for very long, his contribution to the band has played a huge part in defining their current infamy. From church burning to the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous, the actions of Vikernes have brought international attention to the black metal scene in Norway.

While the documentary portion of Pure Fucking Mayhem is fascinating, the DVD itself leaves little to be desired. The production is minimal and the “live footage” includes for the most part scenes of pure darkness interrupted with the occasional photograph. In addition, the CD, which features 8 tracks of piano music inspired by various black metal songs, is quite obscure and boring, working more to fill some kind of marketing requirement than any sort of significant contribution to the quality of the set. Despite these drawbacks, Pure Fucking Mayhem offers a candid look at one of metal’s most notorious bands and is definitely a worthy addition to any black metal fan’s collection.

E1 Entertainment Distribution announces a new deal with SPV in North America. E1 will acquire both physical and digital rights for the Germany-based metal label’s extensive roster, which includes Molly Hatchet, Skinny Puppy, Whitesnake, and Monster Magnet, among others

Michael Koch, C.E.O. E1 Entertainment U.S. comments, “The metal genre has become an important aspect of our business and continues to be a growing initiative spearheaded by Scott Givens, VP of Metal, of E1 Music.”

Andreas Rennmann of SPV adds, “After a period of restructuring SPV is back in the U.S. Market with a strong catalogue of back titles and new releases. With E1 we’re happy to have a partner that offers a professional setup and has the same passion for music.”

This deal further strengthens E1 Entertainment Distribution’s foray into the metal world. E1 currently distributes Snapper, Regain, Listenable, Rising Force (Yngwie Malmsteen’s label), and SST in North America, and Relapse, Metal Blade, Prosthetic, Hopeless, Hevy Devy, and Favoured Nations (Steve Vai) in Canada. E1 will add Sumerian to its label roster for North America starting in March 2010.

Additionally, E1 Music has recently added guitar icon Zakk Wylde’s band, Black Label Society, to its roster, which also includes Satyricon, Hatebreed, High On Fire, Dope, In Flames, Down (live DVD/CD), Overkill, Throwdown, Vision Of Disorder and more.

Blankfest Quebec returns for its 2nd annual blanket fundraiser benefiting Montreal’s homeless shelter, the Old Brewery Mission, on Friday, February 19th at Bar St. Laurent 2, located at 5550 St. Laurent (corner St. Viateur). “I’m really proud of this year’s line-up for Blankfest Quebec and I’m looking forward to breaking last year’s record of collecting over 500 blankets and items of clothing for Montreal’s Homeless,” commented Blankfest Quebec organizer Jon Asher.

Blankfest Quebec’s primary goal is to collect blanket, socks, underwear and non-perishable food for the homeless in Montreal on behalf of the Old Brewery Mission shelter. Montreal’s winter months are known for having temperatures well below zero and those who are homeless run the risk of frostbite and possible death due to overexposure. Blankfest Quebec, in cooperation with the Old Brewery Mission, aims to aid those who are less fortunate and keeps the homeless warm while living on the streets.

I strongly urge people to come out and support this event and even if you can’t stay for the music, I ask everyone to make the effort and bring down a donation for Montreal’s homeless. People forget about the charity organizations after the holidays and that is why it is important to raise donations and aid those who are in need in our community,” says Jon Asher.

Blankfest Quebec has been organized by Jon Asher, in collaboration with the Old Mission Brewery, after Jon read about his friend, New York City indie rock veteran Kenn Rowell of The Baghdaddios, founding Blankfest in 1997 and organizing an annual blanket fundraiser in New York City.

In the past, Rowell says, Blank-Fest NYC has raised more than 6,000 total donations that have been distributed to the homeless in the New York City area and has inspired similar efforts in New Jersey, Manhattan and Nottingham, UK. Among the many distinguished artists who have performed at past international Blank-Fests are: Rothberg (EMI), Buddy Cage (Grateful Dead), Marc Rizzo (Soulfly) and Meg Griffin (Sirius Radio).

R.I.P. – The Legend of Zelda Begins as ‘Poltergeist’ actress dies at age 76

(CNN) – Zelda Rubinstein, the actress best known for her role as the psychic in the horror film “Poltergeist,” died in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday, her agent said. She was 76.

Eric Stevens, Rubinstein’s agent for the past four years, said the 4-foot-3-inch actress had never recovered from a mild heart attack she suffered several months ago, which he said left her a patient at Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles.

“She had several pre-existing conditions that she had been dealing with for years, and unfortunately they began to overtake her,” Stevens said.

Rubinstein, who took up acting later in life after a career as a lab tech, also appeared on television in shows including “Picket Fences” and “Hey Arnold.”

But the diminutive actress first came to fame for her portrayal of Tangina Barrons, the diminutive clairvoyant in “Poltergeist,” where she urged a group of spirits to “Go into the light.” She later revisited the role in the movie’s sequels.

(Variety) – “Catcher in the Rye” author J.D. Salinger has died at age 91 in New Hampshire.

The author’s son, in a statement from the author’s literary representative, says Salinger died of natural causes at his home. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation in the small, remote house in Cornish, N.H.

“The Catcher in the Rye” with its immortal teenage protagonist — the twisted, rebellious Holden Caulfield — came out in 1951 during the time of anxious, Cold War conformity.

Mr. Salinger wrote for adults, but teenagers all over the world identified with the novel’s themes of alienation, innocence and fantasy.

In later years, Salinger become famous for not wanting to be famous, refusing interviews.

A Closer Look at Apple’s New Tablet, the iPad

(CNET) – After months of speculation, Apple has unveiled its tablet, called the iPad. The slim, large screen device evokes much of the same user interface as the iPhone, but it’s bigger and has some surprise features including Apple’s own custom chip.

Here’s the rundown on specs and some highlights of the device.

* The tablet is 0.5 inches thick and weighs 1.5 pounds.

* It has a 9.7-inch display with 1024 x 768-pixel resolution. It also has capacitive multitouch that’s similar to the iPhone.

* The device runs Apple’s own processor, a 1-GHz Apple A4 chip — possibly the fruits of of Apple’s $278 million acquisition of PA semiconductor in 2008.

* The iPad will have 16-GB to 64-GB flash storage.

* It includes speaker, microphone and accelerometer so you can use the device in both landscape and portrait mode. There’s also a compass.

* It has up to 10 hours of battery life and one month of standby time.

* It offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity

* It will include optional 3G access from AT&T. For $30 a month, users can get unlimited data. For iPhone users already crying out in pain about their bondage to the AT&T network, here’s something to sweeten the deal: No contracts are required for the data plan. iPad users can cancel their data connectivity at any time.

* Unlimited data will cost $30 or users can pay $15 for up to 250 MB of data.

* The iPad will cost $500 for 16 GB, $600 for 32 GB and $700 for a 64-GB model. But if you want 3G connectivity, add another $130 to the price tag.

It’s worth noting that these specs are nothing like what entrepreneur Jason Calacanis claimed when he tweeted Tuesday night that he had been testing a tablet.

The iPad will start shipping in two months. The 3G models will be available in 90 days. Complete specs of the iPad from Apple.

Despite its gorgeous hardware, the iPad is missing some key features.

* There’s no camera on the iPad.

* Though Apple is yet to confirm it, on-stage demos of the device during the launch indicate it might not support Flash. That could mean broken pages and some websites that might be off-limits.

No multi-tasking. Apple hasn’t commented on this but it looks like the iPad work like the iPhone when it comes to apps. It can run just one app at a time and there’s no background processing.

* There’s more to the iPad than just this. It will run apps designed for the iPhone, new custom apps and double as an e-book reader.

* And no GPS for the Wi-Fi model. Though the iPad has Google Maps, the lack of GPS means you can’t use it for turn-by-turn navigation or in areas where’s there’s no wireless connectivity.

End of An Era: Little Brother Announces Final Album

Favorites of fans and critics alike, Little Brother, the North Carolina duo of Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh, is proud to finally confirm the release of an album people have been waiting on for years. LeftBack, which will be the fourth album of Little Brother’s illustrious career, will be available April 20th via Hall Of Justus.

Little Brother members Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh worked through several versions of the album before locking in the final version of LeftBack. Close followers of Little Brother may already be familiar with the LeftBack title, however, any previously held notions of this album being an EP should be dismissed. Little Brother opted to scrap the EP concept and instead, crafted an albums worth of material for those who have bee19waiting patiently for Leftback. “I didn’t want our last record to be a bunch of second rate material,” says Phonte. “I wanted to walk away from Little Brother knowing that I gave our fans all that I had to give, and said everything I wanted to say. With LeftBack, I’ve done that.”

Tombstoned: Record Opium Bust Ruins it for everyone

(The Province) – Four people have been arrested in connection with a tombstone filled with opium destined for delivery to a Coquitlam home.

On Jan. 6 a shipment from Iran identified as a 550-kilogram tombstone arrived at the Canada Border Services Agency’s air cargo at Vancouver International Airport. While examining the tombstone, officers discovered a cavity inside filled with almost 57 kg of opium.

Officers seized the drug and the Greater Vancouver Drug Section supervised the delivery of the tombstone to a home in the 700-block Gauthier Avenue in Coquitlam Jan. 13.

The next day, police searched the home and arrested a 39-year-old woman who lives there. That evening, her 48-year-old husband turned himself in to police.

On Jan. 15, a 51-year-old man who rents space at the home was arrested in North Vancouver, and four days later his 55-year-old brother was also arrested in North Vancouver.

EVIL is the story of two hillbillies with hearts of gold who are mistaken for serial killers by a group of camping teens who have seen one too many horror movies. R.I.P. – Jazz Drummer Ed Thigpen Passes at age 79

(NYT) – Ed Thigpen, a drummer whose tasteful and understated style made him a favorite accompanist of some of the best-known performers in jazz, died on Jan. 13 in Copenhagen, where he had lived since 1972. He was 79.

His death was announced by his family. No cause was specified.

Mr. Thigpen was most famous for his tenure with the pianist Oscar Peterson’s trio, one of the most popular small groups in jazz, from 1959 to 1965. He was the first drummer to work with Peterson, whose trios up until then had consisted of piano, bass and guitar, and he earned raves for his supportive playing and especially for his deft use of brushes.

After leaving Peterson, he spent five years with Ella Fitzgerald. He then moved to Copenhagen, where he became an in-demand sideman for visiting and expatriate American jazz musicians.

Scandalous is the first full-length release by Montreal’s Deadwalk. A follow-up to their 2007 EP Powerhouse, Scandalous hits hard, with a focus on solid breakdown riffs and powerful vocals. While there is a strong driving force behind this album, the lack of dynamics subverts potency resulting in a drawn out breakdown fest that essentially chases its own tail.

There’s definitely a lot of potential within Deadwalk to work on creating their own sound and contributing another point of view to hardcore music. The band sounds really tight; the riffs are heavy and clean- perfect support for some face-tearing, anthemic vocals. When Greg Kepka (vocals) kicks in, he certainly doesn’t hold back, but the trouble is, his unwavering, balls-to-the-wall style leaves nothing to draw upon later. He jumps into every track with the same intensity, the same vocal style and sound every time. Despite the drawbacks of their latest release, Deadwalk is not a band that should be written off completely. There’s definitely enough talent here, which seems that if they scrap their current formula and take more risks for the next one they should be able to come up with an album that holds its own.

Creates One of the World’s Premier Live Entertainment Companies

Company to be Renamed Live Nation Entertainment

Live Nation, Inc. (“Live Nation”) (NYSE: LYV) and Ticketmaster Entertainment, Inc. (“Ticketmaster”) (Nasdaq: TKTM) today announced that they have reached agreements with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and with the Canadian Commissioner of Competition, clearing the way for the merger of the companies. Upon closing, the company will be renamed Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. to reflect the combination of Live Nation’s concert promotions expertise with Ticketmaster’s world-class ticketing solutions and artist relationships.

Under the terms of the proposed final judgment filed today in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the companies have agreed to divest Ticketmaster’s self-ticketing subsidiary, Paciolan, to Comcast-Spectacor and to license the Ticketmaster Host technology to Anschutz Entertainment Group, Inc. (“AEG”), as well as to other terms that protect competitive conditions in ticketing and promotions. Seventeen State Attorneys General also participated in the matter and have joined in the U.S. consent decree. The parties’ consent agreement with the Canadian Commissioner of Competition is on substantially equivalent terms.

Michael Rapino, CEO of Live Nation, said, “This is a good and exciting day for the music business, and we are close to finalizing the creation of a new company that will seek to transform the way artists distribute their content and fans can access that content. The Department of Justice was thorough and aggressive in their analysis and their remedies, and we are confident that with this resolution the playing field is competitive and broader as a result of this transaction. We believe that this merger will now create a more diversified company with a great selling platform for artists and a stronger financial profile that will drive improved shareholder value over the long term.”

Irving Azoff, CEO of Ticketmaster, said, “We appreciate the Department of Justice’s effort. Their resolution is a great win for fans. The entertainment industry needs innovation and we are ready to deliver. I’m truly excited that as this new company goes forward, we will be able to create more choices for family entertainment, sports, artists, teams and other rights holders.”

Live Nation Entertainment’s mission will be to improve the live entertainment experience and to drive major innovations in ticketing technology, marketing and service. Through this merger, the parties believe that the combined company will have the tools to develop new products, expand access, improve transparency and deliver artists and fans more choice. This will drive greater attendance at live events and bringing more value to all major constituents in the industry.

The combined company also expects to pursue significant growth opportunities in markets around the world. Internationally, live entertainment remains one of the fastest growing parts of the media industry.

As previously announced, in connection with the merger, each issued and outstanding share of Ticketmaster common stock will be cancelled and converted into the right to receive a number of shares of Live Nation common stock such that Ticketmaster stockholders will receive approximately 50.01% of the voting power of the combined company. Subject to final confirmation, the companies expect each share of Ticketmaster common stock to be cancelled and converted into the right to receive 1.474 shares of Live Nation common stock in connection with the merger and for Live Nation to issue approximately 84,613,661 shares of Live Nation common stock to Ticketmaster stockholders in the aggregate.

The combined company will be led by Michael Rapino as CEO and President of Live Nation Entertainment and Irving Azoff as Executive Chairman of Live Nation Entertainment and CEO of Front Line. Barry Diller will serve as Chairman of the Board of Live Nation Entertainment. The Board will consist of 14 directors, seven from each company.

(Ballerstatus) – Popular 90s rapper, Apache, died on Friday (January 22) from an undisclosed illness.

“I got a call from Shakim [Compere] this morning, Queen Latifah’s manager,” Vin from Naughty by Nature told MTV News. “He was really feeling it. He told me, and I spread the word to Kay and Treach and the rest of our camp.”

The New Jersey-bred rapper (real name: Anthony Teaks) was signed to Tommy Boy Records, where he enjoyed success in 1993 with his controversial hit Q-Tip-produced single, “Gangsta Bitch.” While it only hit no. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, he became a smash in hip-hop circles and clubs.

His solo debut, Apache Ain’t Sh**, peaked at no. 66 on the Billboard 200 in 1993.

A Real Life Wu-Banger: Lawyer for police beating victim wants officers fired

(CBC) – A Vancouver lawyer says the violent, wrongful arrest of a Chinese man this week means the city’s police must act decisively in dealing with the officers involved and will have to do more to regain trust in the Chinese community.

Lawyer Lawrence Wong made the remarks in response to statements by Vancouver resident Yao Wei Wu, who said he was brutalized by police who dragged him from his home in the middle of the night.

Wu said that although he offered no resistance, he was beaten by two plainclothes officers who came to his home about 2 a.m. Thursday investigating a report of a domestic dispute.

Wu – who speaks very little English – said through a translator that the officers had pulled him outside the house and set upon him as soon as he opened the door.

As the officers apparently cannot claim self-defence in this case, they should no longer work for the police, said Wong

(UPI) – Jean Simmons, a two-time Oscar nominee who won an Emmy for the miniseries “The Thorn Birds,” died Friday in Santa Monica, Calif., her agent said. She was 80.

Simmons — who was still in her teens when she was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for her turn as Ophelia in Laurence Olivier’s film adaptation of “Hamlet” — died at her home, her agent, Judy Page, said. Simmons had lung cancer, the Los Angeles Times reported

Simmons received a best actress Oscar nomination in 1969 for “The Happy Ending” and won a best actress Golden Globe Award in 1955 for “Guys and Dolls.” Her screen credits in a career of more than 60 years included “Elmer Gantry,” “Spartacus” and “Home Before Dark.”

Jean Merilyn Simmons was born Jan. 31, 1929, in London. She appeared in five British films before she was 15, the Times said. Her first major exposure came when she was cast in Sir David Lean’s film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations.”.

Report: Leaked Nas And Damian Marley Track Will Not Be on Album

(HipHopDX) – According to HipHopDX.com: Word from Damian & Nas’s camp is that Strong Will Continue , the single that leaked yesterday will not be on the new album. Actually let me rephrase that, the version you are hearing, will not be on the new album. Instead there is a rumored missing Nas verse and different sound all together.

“We are extremely happy with the response that we have been receiving from the leaked version of Strong Will Continue,” said Dan Dalton of Red Light Management, Damian Manager. “While it is not the initial single we planned to release these things happen. The first track we really want everyone to sink their teeth into is “As We Enter”. This is it, the ball rolling, we are really excited about the project.”

Dan also confirmed that the album will be mastered next week and will be ready to go right after that.

FESTIVAL ORGANIZERS ANNOUNCE ROTHBURY POSTPONEMENT FOR 2010 EVENT

Today, festival organizers for the ROTHBURY music festival announced that they will not host a 2010 event.

According to event producers Madison House Presents and AEG Live, a contributing factor in the decision is that, due to various artists’ recording and touring schedules, timing will not allow them to assemble the cutting edge roster that has been associated with ROTHBURY. Madison House Presents’ Jeremy Stein explains, “The result for this year is that we are not able to move forward with the integrity and high standards that we demand from ourselves and for the festival.”

Despite the 2010 postponement, organizers intend to move toward continuing ROTHBURY in 2011. According to Stein, “This event is something very special, and we are unwilling to potentially tarnish what ROTHBURY is, and can become, by working under conditions that will produce anything less than a magical experience. Our efforts are certainly not coming to an end.”

Blood Into Wine was co-directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke, the team behind critically acclaimed documentaries Moog and The Heart Is a Drum Machine). The documentary was shot using multiple Red One cameras, allowing cinematographer Cary Truelick to capture the craggy landscape surrounding Keenan’s vineyards in stunning detail. Editor Robert Beadle skillfully worked with over 200 hours of footage to help craft the story of two pioneer winemakers in an unforgiving region. Blood Into Wine was Produced by Chris “Topper” McDaniel, Ryan Page, Jason Stall, and Christopher Pomerenke.

(Courier) – The nonprofit society that operates the city’s supervised drug injection site on East Hastings is reviewing a recent court ruling to see whether it can open a second facility.

Mark Townsend, executive director of the PHS Community Services Society, described the B.C. Court of Appeal’s Jan. 15 ruling as a victory for the continued operation of the Insite injection site–and possibly a new facility.

“For sure we’re going to start looking and working on a second site,” Townsend told the Courier. “But the form that site would take is going to get a little bit dictated by what this new ruling would mean. But that doesn’t mean one is opening tomorrow.”

The court of appeal’s lengthy 2-1 ruling, which is available on the court’s website, backs a May 2008 B.C. Supreme Court decision to allow Insite to operate indefinitely.

Insite was set to close June 30, 2008 but B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ian Pitfield granted staff and users a constitutional exemption from the country’s drug laws.
