Another year and hundreds of tattoo’s later, Alberta Bound Productions kicked off their annual Tattoo and Arts Festival, filled with ink, blood and a few tears. Starting Friday (August 14 ) at Calgary’s BMO Centre, it was humming with the sounds of tattoo machines.
If this wasn’t your first time experiencing the tattoo and arts festival. you would have noticed the size difference compared to the 2008 festival, this led to disappointment for some, as there were plenty of tattoos to be shown off. Mind you there was a lack of art and the ever popular cars and motorcycles; although this did not dampen the spirits of festival goers.
“Friday’s turnout was more than expected” commented one artist, one would find it to be very quiet, this wasn’t a bad thing though when you want to stop and watch someone’s face while a needle runs over some of the more sensitive parts of the human body. Having the ability to stop and check out all the work that was being put out for day one it was a great teaser for the next few days. With doors opening at noon and staying open till at least 10pm, it was more than enough time to see magnificent colour, portrait, tribal and neo-traditional tattoos, flow in and out of the building.
All three days were filled with contests for people to parade their work by artists all over North America and from other countries like France and Germany. Some of the categories were Tattoo of the Day, Medium Color & Medium black and grey, back piece and sleeves just to name a few. Day two rolls in which was expected to be the busiest and it lived up to its expectations.
Having not all the shoulder room you would like, it was made up for by the art that people were putting on their bodies, with special artists like Bob Tyrell from Detroit’s Night Gallery, many waited to have a portrait done by him or just wanted to watch the magic happen as tattoos came to life on peoples bodies. Day two also featured plenty of activities like girls beating the shit out of each other in a roller derby match and a dodge ball competition between tattoo artists, vendors and others involved in the festival. This was all leading up to a big bloody painful mess, what’s not to enjoy? As for the dodge ball, Calgary’s own Deadly Tattoos came out as undefeated champions with Edmonton’s clothing line Die Young Live Free getting a close second.
Day three rolled in and this being what seemed to be the Hangover day as numerous after parties were supplied at bars around Calgary things were a bit slower and less exciting. This gave everyone who attended the chance to really focus on things like Tyson McAdoo’s art and the stage performance of Lucky Diamond Rich AKA the most tattooed man in the world.
For another year in the tattoo industry in Calgary, it was just another day on the job for many artists but a chance for not just adults but children to see the value and beauty in art on our skin, something that slowly is being more and more accepted into our everyday culture and lives.

Berlin “sex academy” offers tips for visitors

(Reuters) – Wannabe Latin lovers can improve their technique by playing with the erogenous zones of naked mannequins at a new interactive exhibition that has now opened in Berlin.
The “Amora sex academy” that opened in Berlin on Thursday welcomes visitors with the wry slogan, “Finally — an exhibition for those who always have to touch everything.”
More than 50 interactive displays guide visitors through the intimate areas of the male and female bodies, offering helpful tips on everything from striptease to oral sex and how to achieve a perfect orgasm.
“A lot of couples come in here together to learn something,” said Uta Barkow, the manager of the Beate Uhse sex chain which is hosting the academy. “It’s been very well received so far. A lot of exhibits have that ‘aha’ effect on a lot of people.”
The show features several life-sized plastic models, naked and in various positions. One female mannequin light ups when touched in the right spot. A voice shrieks “That’s it!” when the visitor manages to put his finger on the elusive G-spot.
Next to it is what the museum called its “Spank-o-meter.” It measures the level of pleasure a mannequin receives when spanked with a leather whip.

The name says it all! Sanctuary presents the second edition of its one of its most popular and ultra fun special themed events – this one devoted to SCIENCE FICTION (double featurrrrre … ). We’ll be decking out the Sanctuary Mothership known as the Club 23 West with a crazy sci-fi future & retro atmosphere, and we highly encourage everyone to step up and get together a crazy outfit to match the theme! It can be as simple as a glow in the dark t-shirt or a coupla LED pins, or as elaborate as a full-on Barbarella space vixen B-movie fetish outfit or cyber warrior!
