Live Review: Tyrants Blood w/ Xenocide, Naraka and Excruciating Pain
Friday, July 6th, 2012
The Rickshaw Theatre

For a small but loyal crowd, beastly Tyrants Blood played what is quite possibly their last local show for 2012. Recorded for an upcoming live CD they played without any faults. Opening acts included local tech, brutal death metal band Xenocide, last minute add on to the bill, college death metal The Almighty Excruciating Pain and Medicine Hat’s Naraka.

Gross Misconduct was supposed to be the first band on the bill but had to cancel their appearance due to a last minute injury. Replacing them was college death metal band The Almighty Excruciating Pain. Simple, catchy, dull death metal with elements strongly heading towards 90s punk like NOFX and modern deathcore. EPain plays a lot of shows in town; not hard to miss their excruciatingly painful performances. With more time practicing and less time on stage, they would be primed to surpass the goofy, tongue in cheek performance that is currently the focus of their live show.

Medicine Hat’s Naraka was the only traveling band of the evening, currently on a small tour in support of their 2012 release The Messiah Experiment. They sound like a Swansong era Carcass mixed with Orphaned Land, folk-influenced vocals.

Xenocide, a young band with high potential, was the second last act on the bill. While they would benefit from adding more depth and originality to their music, these overly technical, brutal death metal musicians are no doubt talented. Fans of Origin, The Faceless and Decapitated will get their panties moist with this band; while space nerds will connect with their lyrics and overall theme. These guys follow today’s trend of polished death metal with breakdowns and technical sweep-picking solos.

Headliners Tyrants Blood recorded their flawless set for an upcoming live CD in front of a small crowd, especially so for a Friday night. There are two things that Tyrants Blood are good at: playing fast and pumping iron. Matt Blood may be the smallest guy in the band but don’t let his small stature fool you. He’s a frenzied beast attacking the drums, easily one of the most talented drummers of Vancouver. Formerly The Traditional Sodomizer of the Goddess of Perversity,The Undertaker and Julian, Marco Banco’s extremely fast and insanely talented guitar playing and writing mesmerized the crowd. Vinnie Borden’s vocals, a favourite by many for his low, almost guttural growls, perfectly match Brian “The Messiah” Langley’s higher pitched screams. They played classics like “Destroyer” and “Torn from the Sky,” as well as fitting new songs off their upcoming and highly anticipated release.
