Album Review: Nile
At the Gates of Sethu
Nuclear Blast

Nile. Gods when it comes to proficiency, but a little too much like a long-winded preachin’ man. “Natural Liberation of Fear Through the Ritual Deception of Death.” Who on earth gives a song a title that damn long? All the same, this album opens up what may be the world’s largest can of ass whoopin’. The first album from Karl, Dallas, George and Todd in three years, At the Gates of Sethu is completely worthy of a band like Nile.

Enduring the Eternal Molestation of Flame” bursts forward through the speakers, ready to make your ears, nay, your soul itself bleed. Though there is little if any filler in this album, the next stand-out track appears a little later on, in the form of “The Gods Who Light Up the Sky at the Gate of Sethu.” The epic track plays like something spewed forth from the very pit of hell.

Nile utilizes the fairly common theme of ancient religion. Unlike other bands (Amon Amarth, anyone?), they make a departure from Norse mythology to explore the mythology of ancient Egypt. Where religion has generally continued to be a tired, cliché subject in heavy metal (of any subgenre), Nile is able to deliver something unique and fresh with At the Gates of Sethu, as they have always done in previous work.

Rounding out the album are the songs “Supreme Humanism of Megalomania” and “The Chaining of the Iniquitous.” Both tracks slaughter, especially “Supreme.” An album that could easily have been used as a soundtrack to The Mummy, At the Gates of Sethu is packed with thundering bass and blistering riffs. Not for the faint of heart, it is sure to please.
