Album Review: Coffin Texts
The Tomb of Infinite Ritual
Dark Descent Records

Many followers have been waiting twelve years for another release from Egyptian themed, old school death metal band Coffin Texts. While the hard-to-come-by Gods of Creation, Death and Afterlife left many death metal fans’ mouths watering for more, after over a decade without any releases, they were put in the “one hit wonder” pile of great bands. It’s not like members Robert Cardenas and Emilio Marquez haven’t been busy with Malice and Possessed, respectively; two ungodly death metal bands. With the release of The Tomb of Infinite Ritual, it seems the band hasn’t even aged 12 years; they’ve kept true to their sound, of course with better production and the speed level cranked a bit higher.

The Tomb of Infinite Ritual is just under 40 minutes of pounding and blasting brutal death metal done the right way. Emilio is a godly beast like Hathor behind the drums. The intelligible and well enunciated but raspy and brutal vocals by Robert Cardenas will sooth any fan of 1980s David Vincent, especially legendary album Altars of Madness. Filled with a healthy dose of fast paced brutality and technicality, and intense pinch harmonics, the flow of the album is precise especially in the song “To Manifest”. “The Final Transformation”’s grooving bass lines follow traditional elements of mid tempo 1990s Florida death metal. While not being an overly memorable album -not as enjoyable as their debut release- many similarities can be heard and seen; i.e. rather weak artwork on both albums. That being said, don’t judge a book by its cover.
