Lanalou’s

Tucked away on Powell Street in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side you’ll find a neat little venue called Lanalou’s. Back when this little hole in the wall was called Hokos it served as the launch pad for several of Vancouver’s current Indie music scene favourites, and on May 12th as the new and improved (since now the sound guy doesn’t double as sushi chef) Lanalou’s, it played host to Alberta’s most promising up-and-coming groovy band.

Stone Iris’ seven-piece lineup barely fit on Lanalous’ cozy corner stage but once they launched into their set they settled into the comfy circumstances and the audience began to move. A decent crowd had showed up for the triple bill featuring local bands Hoffman Lenses and Dusty Bones. The feel of their songs ranged from bouncy folk-rock to groovy reggae and pop rock and back. For all their genre shifting though, they managed to maintain their signature sound throughout and the crowd stayed interested.
Stone Iris currently hails from Edmonton Alberta, though members come from several corners of the Canadian West. The act originally came together in Calgary with core members Elliot and Garret Niven – brother guitar / vocalists with drummer Jeff Burwash in 2007 playing mainly rock. Over time they gained bass player Ryan Ast, keyboardist Eddy Molasses Robinson, Percussionist Juice E Jensen and vocalist Kari James and expanded their well of influences to include reggae, hip hop and funk.

The variety of vocals in the band keep their sound ever interesting. No matter what kind of song they’re playing, from pop rock to hip hop, the vocalists from Stone Iris have thought out an interesting set of vocal harmonies for it. As if to test this theory, near the end of their set they pulled out a straight ahead country ballad. You gotta hand it to them for keeping the audience on their toes.

This is certainly a dedicated group. They’ve released their debut album Illuminations, are currently touring behind it in Western Canada and are planning forays in the USA.
