Destruction – 30th Anniversary Tour

A Bestial Invasion leaves Total De-saster in Vancouver on a Monday Night.

Vital Remains, Warbringer and the quite Legendary Destruction invaded Vancouver on a quiet Monday evening to bring forth a night of pure fucking metal. Destruction’s 30th Anniversary Tour across the North of America is not a show to miss if there is a date near you. With promises of playing mostly their old classics they won’t leave you disappointed, though some fans left disappointed because brutal death metal act Pathology from San Diego bailed on the tour a few nights before this show due to payment issues. However, this lead to the remaining three bands to play longer sets!

First band up were veteran Rhode Island death metallers Vital Remains, supplying 45 minutes of brutal anti-Christianity death metal. Like Destruction they stuck to playing several of their classics, especially off their masterpiece album “Dechristianize” which they played “Infidel”, “Dechristianize” and “Let the Killing Begin” the rest off “Icons of Evil”, their last studio full length released in 2007.

Warbringer who have invaded Vancouver many times in the past few years were either a favourite of the crowd or displeasure of going through the same thing yet again. Complaints of them being on every tour were often heard amongst concert goers. After playing the same songs they always do and butchering a Motorhead cover half the crowd was left happy and have were in a total fucking bore. While they had great energy but being professional musicians who never seem to stop touring you better be able to put on an entertaining show. You can tell John Kevill has been touring and doing a lot of shows in the past few years. His voice went from powerful to just starting to crack which is easily heard when he even just speaks between songs.

Destruction opened with “The Butcher Strikes Back” gearing the crowd ready for the thrash metal assault they were about to portray. The three piece stuck to their word and gave fans what they wanted to hear. All their classics which thrash metal fanatics were itching to hear. Sticking mostly with their mid to late 80s material from “Total Desaster”, “Mad Butcher”, “Thrash Till Death”, “Antichrist”, “Tormentor” and “Bestial Invasion” to tricking the crowd they would not play “Curse The Gods” and saving it for their encore. Schmier’s fierce and powerful vocals were perfect amongst his his pitch shrieks, especially during classic “Curse the Gods”. Michael Sifringer founding guitarist and only member to stay in the band for all 30 years running perfected every guitar solo and note with a fast furious ease that could only be completed by him, while new-ish beast drummer Vaaver was a monster behind the kit. Destruction left the crowd pleased and proud to have seen their last performance for who knows how long! Very possible the last Vancouver date so if you weren’t there, shame on you!
