Album Review – Binary Park
The Deviated
Metropolis Records

“More of the same” can often be a bad thing. Sometimes though, it’s exactly what you need- don’t fix what isn’t broken, hone it smooth as mirror shades. This is what Binary Park have done with The Deviated, their followup to last year’s superlative Worlds Collide.

This project has already established itself as a contemporary of Haujobb. Their brand of EBM falls squarely within the cyberpunk ethos, evoking images of back alley deals in the sprawl of Chiba City circa Neuromancer. This isn’t an easy sound to capture- Mind.In.A.Box has worked their entire career at obtaining this sound, but they’ve really only nailed it a with a few songs. Binary Park have managed to release two entire albums that perfectly encapsulate this audio ambience.

The Deviated has a slower, more relaxed and confident tone than its predecessor. This is most apparent in vocalist Huw Jones delivery. His range hasn’t really grown, but there is less of a whispery aspect to how he approaches the singing- it’s almost as if he’s realized his voice gets him laid, so he’s grabbed the bull by the horns, so to speak. While this entire disc is quite strong, there are a couple of stand out tracks- “Into the Deep” is oily-smooth, the audio equivalent of decaying plasma after a sun flare. Elements of glitch, EBM, and industrial metal shift and coalesce in a moody dance- this song would make a perfect score for a seduction.

The title track, “The Deviated”, is the strongest offering on this album. It kicks along, an upbeat dance floor filler track with enough stomp to appease the rivetheads, and a melodic hook to the chorus to draw in those exquisite corpse Gothettes. If there’s any one drawback to The Deviated, it’s that its somewhat on the short side. It’s 10 tracks all told, but three of those are remixes.  It clocks in at just under 49 minutes, seemingly over before its begun. However, when you really get down to it- when “short, but sweet” is the only legitimate critique, then you know you’ve got a good album on your hands. We’re just looking for something to split hairs about at this point.

If you’re a fan of electronic industrial music, then this is an album that should absolutely appeal to your genre sensibilities. This is superb music to fuck to, so go buy it and test the theory.
